Blaufuss, F. Halzen, C. Kopper (Changed to add one missing author, no other changes from initial version.)The recent observation by the IceCube neutrino observatory of an astrophysical flux of neutrinos represents the "first light" in the nascent field of neutrino astronomy. The observed diffuse neutrino flux seems to suggest a much larger level of hadronic activity in the non-thermal universe than previously thought and suggests a rich discovery potential for a larger neutrino observatory. This document presents a vision for an substantial expansion of the current IceCube detector, IceCube-Gen2, including the aim of instrumenting a volume of clear glacial ice at the South Pole to deliver substantial increases in the astrophysical neutrino sample for all flavors. A detector of this size would have a rich physics program with the goal to resolve the sources of these astrophysical neutrinos, discover GZK neutrinos, and be a leading observatory in future multi-messenger astronomy programs

Accuracy of ultrasound-based (BAT) prostate-repositioning: A three-dimensional on-line fiducial-based assessment with cone-beam computed tomography
Purpose: To assess the accuracy of ultrasound-based repositioning (BAT) before prostate radiation with fiducial-based three-dimensional matching with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Patients and Methods: Fifty-four positionings in 8 patients with I-125 seeds/intraprostatic calcifications as fiducials were evaluated. Patients were initially positioned according to skin marks and after this according to bony structures based on CBCT. Prostate position correction was then performed with BAT. Residual error after repositioning based on skin marks, bony anatomy, and BAT was estimated by a second CBCT based on user-independent automatic fiducial registration. Results: Overall mean value (MV +/- SD) residual error after BAT based on fiducial registration by CBCT was 0.7 +/- 1.7 mm in x (group systematic error [M] = 0.5 mm; SD of systematic error [Sigma] = 0.8 mm; SD of random error [sigma] 1.4 mm), 0.9 +/- 3.3 mm in y (M = 0.5 mm, Sigma = 2.2 mm, sigma = 2.8 mm), and - 1.7 +/- 3.4 turn in z (M = - 1.7 mm, Sigma = 2.3 mm, sigma = 3.0 mm) directions, whereas residual error relative to positioning based on skin marks was 2.1 +/- 4.6 mm in x (M = 2.6 mm, Sigma = 3.3 mm, sigma = 3.9 mm), -4.8 +/- 8.5 mm in y (M = -4.4 mm, Sigma = 3.7 mm, sigma = 6.7 mm), and -5.2 +/- 3.6 mm in z (M = -4.8 mm, Sigma = 1.7 mm, sigma = 3.5mm) directions and relative to positioning based on bony anatomy was 0 +/- 1.8 mm in x (M = 0.2 mm, Sigma = 0.9 mm, sigma = 1.1 mm), -3.5 +/- 6.8 mm in y (M = -3.0 mm, Sigma = 1.8 mm, sigma = 3.7 mm), and -1.9 +/- 5.2 mm in z (M = -2.0 mm, Sigma = 1.3 mm, sigma = 4.0 mm) directions. Conclusions: BAT improved the daily repositioning accuracy over skin marks or even bony anatomy. The results obtained with BAT are within the precision of extracranial stereotactic procedures and represent values that can be achieved with several users with different education levels. If sonographic visibility is insufficient, CBCT or kV/MV portal imaging with implanted fiducials are recommended. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc
Museumhotel Dordrecht
Architectur

Thermodynamic and related studies of aqueous copper(II) sulfate solutions
This thesis describes a systematic investigation of the thermodynamic quantities associated with the interaction between Cu2+ and SO42- in aqueous solution. A variety of techniques including UV-Visible spectrophotometry, Cu(II) ion-selective electrode potentiometry, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy and titration calorimetry have been used.
The values for the (aq) association constants determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometry in NaClO4 media as a function of ionic strength were in good agreement with published data but were lower than the values obtained from Cu(II) ion -selective electrode potentiometry. The source of this difference was traced to the presence of solvent-separated ion pairs which are only partially detected by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. This was shown by a detailed investigation of CuSO4(aq) over a wide range of concentrations using modern broad-band dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS). This technique revealed the presence of three ion-pair types: double solvent-separated, solvent-shared and contact ion pairs.
Calorimetric titrations using the log KA values determined by potentiometry, have provided for the first time reliable values for the enthalpy and entropy changes associated with complex formation between Cu2+(aq) and SO42-(aq) system over range of ionic strengths (in NaClO4 media). These data were fitted to a specific ion interaction model to obtain the standard state value which was in excellent agreement with the values obtained in other studies and from the DRS work in this study.
In addition, investigations have been carried out into the physicochemical properties, (osmotic coefficients, densities, heat capacities, solubilities and viscosities) of ternary mixtures of CuSO4(aq) with Na2SO4(aq) or MgSO4(aq). The isopiestic measurements (water activities) of the mixtures were in general well described by Zdanovskii's rule, especially for the mixtures of CuSO4 with MgSO4. The densities of the ternary mixtures of CuSO4 with MgSO4 were found to follow Young's rule of mixing but those of CuSO4 with Na2SO4 deviated from linearity. The solubilities of the salts in their ternary mixtures agree well with literature data and show that the solubility of MgSO4 or CuSO4 decreases with increasing Na2SO4 concentration. The viscosities of all the ternary mixtures show clear negative departures from 'Young's rule' type behaviour
