Scalability of Optical Interconnects Based on Microring Resonators

    No full text
This letter investigates the use of optical microring resonators as switching elements (SEs) in large optical interconnection fabrics. We introduce a simple physical-layer model to assess scalability in crossbar- and Benes-based architectures. We also propose a new dilated SE that improves scalability to build fabrics of several terabits per second of aggregate capacit

The article is related to a recent book: Historia secreta del mundo (2015), by Emilio Gavilanes. Specifically, it aims to demonstrate how its narrative structure is created from the tension between the genre of the microstory and that of the novel, such that one would have to ponder why the author decides on the former to express himself. It seems crucial that the collection of microstories that comprise Historia secreta del mundo are not told as separate chains, but rather form a single unit thanks to the central theme (time), which, furthermore, is of relevant structural value and on which we shall focus.

Optical interconnection networks based on microring resonators

    No full text
Optical microring resonators can be integrated on a chip to perform switching operations directly in the optical domain. Thus they become a building block to create switching elements in on-chip optical interconnection networks, which promise to overcome some of the limitations of current electronic networks. However, the peculiar asymmetric power losses of microring resonators impose new constraints on the design and control of on-chip optical networks. In this work, we study the design of multistage interconnection networks optimized for a particular metric that we name the degradation index, which characterizes the asymmetric behavior of microrings. We also propose a routing control algorithm to maximize the overall throughput, considering the maximum allowed degradation index as a constrain

Can simple optical switching fabrics scale to terabit per second switch capacities?

    No full text
The design of fabrics for terabit packet switches and routers needs to consider the limitations imposed by electronic technologies. In particular, attention has to be paid to information density and to power consumption and dissipation, as well as to power supply and footprint requirements. Optical technologies can overcome some of these limitations. We analyze the use of optical fabrics to interconnect line cards in terabit packet switches and routers. For this purpose, single-plane and multiplane optical interconnection architectures are proposed that exploit wavelength agility at line cards to implement the required switching functionality. The physical-layer scalability and feasibility of these architectures are studied by using realistic models, mostly based on the characteristics of commercially available opto-electronic devices. As a result, the considered architectures can be characterized in terms of power budget and signal-to-noise ratio, enabling the computation of the maximum achievable port count and aggregate switching capacity. Our results show that aggregate capacities of the order of a few terabits per second are possible in very simple optical switching fabrics and that the multiplane architectures permit a complexity trade-off between the wavelength and space domains, making the overall design more feasible

Different Settings of Nonsynchronized Bilevel Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and Respiratory Function in Preterm Infants: A Pilot Study

Objective With this study, we evaluated the short-term effects of different modes and settings of noninvasive respiratory support on gas exchange, breathing parameters, and thoracoabdominal synchrony in preterm infants in the acute phase of moderate respiratory distress syndrome. Study Design A feasibility crossover trial was conducted in neonates < 32 weeks' gestation on nasal continuous positive airway pressure (n-CPAP) or bilevel n-CPAP. Infants were delivered the following settings in consecutive order for 10 minutes each: • n-CPAP (5 cm H 2O) • bilevel n-CPAP 1 (Pres low = 5 cm H 2O, Pres high = 7 cm H 2O, T-high = 1 second, rate = 30/min) • n-CPAP (5 cm H 2O) • bilevel n-CPAP 2 (Pres low = 5 cm H 2O, Pres high = 7 cm H 2O, T-high = 2 second, rate = 15/min) • n-CPAP (5 cm H 2O). During each phase, physiologic parameters were recorded; the thoracoabdominal synchrony expressed by the phase angle (Φ) and other respiratory patterns were monitored by noncalibrated respiratory inductance plethysmography. Results Fourteen preterm infants were analyzed. The mean CPAP level was significantly lower in the n-CPAP period compared with bilevel n-CPAP 1 and 2 (p = 0.03). Higher values were achieved with bilevel n-CPAP 2 (6.2 ± 0.6 vs. 5.7 ± 0.5 cm H 2O, respectively; p < 0.05). No statistical difference in the Φ was detected, nor between the three settings. Conclusion Our study did not show any superiority of bilevel n-CPAP over n-CPAP. However, nonsynchronized bilevel n-CPAP might be helpful when additional pressure is needed. Key Points There is currently a high degree of uncertainty about the superiority of one modality and setting of noninvasive respiratory over another. Our study confirmed that non-synchronized bilevel n-CPAP might be helpful when additional pressure is needed for recruitment. A T-high of 1 second could possibly be better tolerated in this population, but further research is needed
