The Innate Chronotoxicity hypothesis: an ubiquitous physiological flaw both unnoticed and inevitable. Could circadian rhythm be an evolutionary mismatch?
Objective: The aim of this study is to outline a flaw in a com-monly scarcely considered physiological adaptation process, which, unnoticed, can lead to severe pathologies that range from cancer to autoimmunity. This being circadian rhythm (CR) disruption a common factor in the onset of such diseases, an additional objective of this paper is to assess whether or not CR is advantageous for organisms and in which conditions that may be and, if disadvantageous, to measure its chronotoxicity. The term "chronotoxicity" is here intended to denote the degree to which the environment desynchronizes the CR of an organism. Methods: An inductive research approach was adopted to integrate, evaluate and interpret the findings of the existing literature to form and verify a new interpretation in the field of research that in this study was named as "Innate Chronotoxicity" (IC) hypothesis. Results: The analysis of the cited literature provided data to derive four empirical assumptions for the attainment of the IC hypothesis, and namely that: the equatorial region is the only area on our planet that is not chronotoxic for humans because its constant LD cycle corresponds to the human organism's internal clock cycle and may therefore correctly entrain the circadian rhythm; chronotoxicity is therefore innate and inevitable considering that the majority of hu-mans live a long way from the equator and the circadian rhythm is a congenital physiological feature of all humans; the circadian rhythm is an evolutionary mismatch since innate chronotoxicity is inherently a disadvantage; IC intensity increases proportionally to the distance a person lives from the equator. Conclusions: Innate chronotoxicity and its causes have remained unnoticed and undetected even to this day, although this study's fin-dings robustly validate the above four assumptions. If this hypothesis is confirmed through further rigorous research, it bears significant implications for the world's healthcare systems, due to the burden placed on them by the estimated population affected and the severity of the resulting related diseases. To entertain further speculation, in the conclusions it is cautiously suggested an expanded view of the circadian pacemaker tree

“Weighed, not counted”: territorial (mis)representation in Italian metropolitan council elections
Metropolitan cities were established by Italian Law no. 56/2014 (commonly known as the “Delrio
Law”) as a new level of government, replacing and redefining functions previously performed by
provinces in selected major urban areas. One of their three key governing bodies is the metropolitan
council, a representative assembly the members of which are elected via an indirect, second-level,
proportional, list-based system in which the electorate comprises all sitting mayors and councillors
from metropolitan city municipalities. The election mechanism applies a differential weighting
scheme that reflects the population size of the municipalities in which voters serve as mayors or
councillors. Using the outcomes of the metropolitan council elections held in the years 2021 and
2022 in eight metropolitan cities, this study highlights the variety of ways (many of which appear to
be largely unintended) in which demographic weighting bestows significantly greater (and, arguably,
unwarranted) power to larger cities’ representatives, essentially disrupting the principles of
territorial representation that the weighting scheme intended to embody. The study also focuses on
how the legal framework for metropolitan council elections generates institutional instability via
mandatory forfeitures and ensuing substitutions of seat vacancies. Finally, the author identifies
potential adjustments to the electoral system – especially a proposal for the attenuation of
disproportionate territorial representation via demographic weighting based on the so-called
“square-root method”
A novel comprehensive paradigm for the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis: therapeutic approaches and future perspectives on its treatment
It is well recognized that variation in the geographical distribution of prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) exists: increasing the latitude its prevalence increases as well, but the underlying causes of such dissimilarity still remained elusive as of today. Currently, the most accredited hypothesis is that the closer to the equator the more pronounced is the amount of sunlight which, in turn, increases the production of vitamin D. Cholecalciferol is indeed deficient in MS patients, but this factor does not explain by itself the etiopathogenesis of the disease. In the present study, to search for a pattern and provide a model of the disease’s etiology consistent with this regional factor, as well with its changing ethnic, sex-ratio, lifestyle variations and the other unexplained aspects of MS, an extensive analysis of peer-reviewed literature and data was conducted. The arisen hypothesis was that, increasing the latitude, the factor that varies and can have the stronger effect on the human organism, is the continuous and ever-increasing diversity of the natural light–dark cycle. The consequent effort of the suprachiasmatic nucleus to entrain the organism’s circadian rhythm affects the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis resulting in desynchronizing the central and peripheral circadian clocks and pathologizing the immunitary system. To verify such hypothesis, a theoretical framework of the etiopathogenesis, coherent with the gathered literature, was conceived and a demonstration to corroborate it was eventually devised and performed. The results underscored that people living in countries subjected to a further circadian disruptive factor, as daylight saving time, have a 6.35 times higher prevalence of MS than States placed on their same latitude that do not observe it, thus strongly supporting the hypothesis. As further reinforcement of the conclusions, it is worth mentioning that the levels of polyamines rise abruptly in autoimmune diseases. Moreover, among their numerous roles, these polycations participate to the regulation of the circadian clock so their sudden variation might disrupt it. Following these interesting findings, new perspectives in therapies are, therefore, proposed
Interstizi scolastici: la prossimità residenza-scuola fra gli alunni di origine immigrata a Bologna
This text explores home-school proximity among youths attending lower secondary schools in Bologna. Via geolocation of school and students’ addresses, characteristics of pupils preferring schools closest to home are identified in light of city area, migration status, family cultural background, and potential and actual recruitment capabilities of each school. First-generation immigrants and students of low social background residing in disadvantaged areas express a greater tendency towards educational immobility
Blood, buddies, banks: Potential funding sources for starting a new business as perceived by Maghrebi, Filipino and Chinese immigrants in Italy
After an overview of the role of entrepreneurship in migratory projects and the connected modes of financing business activities, especially among Maghrebi, Filipino and Chinese immigrants, the chapter examines data drawn from a study of 489 individuals belonging to those ethnic groups and Italian natives in the province of Bologna, Italy. Via a “vignette”, respondents are invited, firstly, to imagine a long-unemployed young couple (sharing the respondents’ migratory background) deciding to set up a new enterprise, even if they lack the capital to do so; secondly, to suggest spontaneously to whom the couple should turn for economic support and to provide reasons for their choices, in order to capture the salience of family members (blood), friendship and community networks (buddies), credit institutions (banks), and other funding sources and coping strategies. Statistical analysis of post-coded reactions and scrutiny of response transcripts reveal sharply defined differences in the outlooks of the four groups, which arguably reflect cultural specificities, tempered by enlightening intra-group differentiation, conflict and ambiguity. Moreover, the non-directive vignette technique helps identify unanticipated solutions and rationales
