    Assessment and management of iron overload in β-thalassaemia major patients during the 21st century : a real-life experience from the Italian WEBTHAL projec

    No full text
    We conducted a cross-sectional study on 924 β-thalassaemia major patients (mean age 30·1 years) treated at nine Italian centres using the WEBTHAL software, to evaluate real-life application of iron overload assessment and management standards. Serum ferritin 2 years. Patients who never had a cardiac MRI (CMR) T2* measurement were 2 years. Deferoxamine (22·8%) was more commonly used in patients with Hepatitis C Virus or high serum creatinine. Deferiprone (20·6%) was less commonly prescribed in patients with elevated alanine aminotransferase; while a deferoxamine + deferiprone combination (17·9%) was more commonly used in patients with serum ferritin >2500 ng/ml or CMR T2* <20 ms. Deferasirox (38·3%) was more commonly prescribed in patients <18 years, but less commonly used in those with heart disease or high iron intake. These observations largely echoed guidelines at the time, although some practices are expected to change in light of evolving evidence

    Productive Public Expenditure in a New Economic Geography Model

    No full text
    We assess whether and how differences in productive public expenditure impacts on industrial location. Since productive public expenditure and taxation affect in opposite direction industrial location, it is not straightforward that following an increase in productive public expenditure in a region, that region will necessarily enjoy stronger agglomeration. As a major contribution to the literature, we consider jointly two effects arising from public policy: the demand effect and the productivity effect. The interplay of these two effects determines the final impact on the spatial distribution of firms. The result is influenced by the proportion in which tax payers of the two regions contribute to the financing of public expenditure.economic geography; public expenditure, footloose capital

    A SHORT SURVEY ON CHAOTIC DYNAMICS IN SOLOW-TYPE GROWTH MODELS

    No full text
    In this paper we review some Solow-type growth models, framed is discrete time, which are able to generate complex dynamic behaviour. For these models put forward by Day (1982, 1983); Bhm and Kaas (2000); and Commendatore (2005) we show that crucial features which could determine the emergence of regular or irregular growth cycles are (i) if the average saving ratio is constant or not; and (ii) the curvature of production function, representing the degree of substitutability between labour and capital. The lower the degree of substitutability, the higher the likelihood of complex behaviour.Logistic Map, Li-York Chaos, Growth Models, Local Stability, Triangle Stability

    A two-sector growth model with institutional saving and investment

    No full text
    This paper develops a two-sector growth model in which institutionalinvestors play a significant role. A necessary and sufficient conditionis established under which these investors own the entire capitalstock in the long run. The dependence of the long-run growth rateon the behaviour of such investors, and the effects of a productivityincrease are analysed

    Uso de biomarcadores geoquímicos na avaliação de contaminação antropogênica na enseada de Porto Belo, SC

    TCC (graduação) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências Físicas e Matemáticas, Curso de Química.O objetivo principal deste estudo foi avaliar possíveis contaminações na Enseada de Porto Belo - SC em virtude do grande afluxo de turistas na região e conseqüente aumento da carga de esgoto doméstico. Foram analisadas amostras de sedimento e água, coletadas em março/2008. Em alguns pontos de amostragem os valores da distribuição dos hidrocarbonetos alifáticos, conciliados com índices como o índice preferencial de carbono (IPC) e a razão entre a mistura complexa não resolvida e o somatório de hidrocarbonetos (MCNR/ΣHC), apresentaram perfis característicos de aportes por derivados de petróleo. Este fato foi confirmado nas amostras de água, onde foram detectadas concentrações de hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPA) relativas a ambientes efetivamente afetados, sendo estes dados associados às atividades náuticas. A razão entre os esteróis (coprostanol/colestanol) sugeriu uma possível contaminação do sedimento por efluente doméstico, possivelmente causada pelo aumento da atividade turística nesta época

    Agricultural Institutions, Industrialization and Growth: the Case of New Zealand and Uruguay in 1870-1940

    Abstract In this paper we apply a model of early industrialization to the case of New Zealand and Uruguay in 1870-1940. We show how di_erences in agricultural institutions may have produced di_erent development paths in two countries which were similar under many respects. While in New Zealand the active role of the Crown in regulating the land market facilitated access to land, in Uruguay land was seized by a small group of large landowners. Our model shows that land concentration may have negatively inuenced industrialization and growth by impeding the formation of a large group of middle-income landowners and, as a consequence, the development of a domestic demand for basic manufactures. We support this view with a comparative analysis of agricultural institutions and industrial development in New Zealand and Uruguaygricultural Institutions; Industrialization; Growth; New Zealand; Uruguay; Functional Distribution; Agricultural surplus;
