Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

In Milan the opposition Verdi vs Wagner became a well-defined cultural construction in the period starting with the triumph of Lohengrin Italian première (Bologna, 1871) up to the clamorous fiasco the opera received in Milan (1873). Through an analysis of new sources (also iconographical), mostly taken from the contemporary humor periodicals, this article aims to reconstruct the discursive context that shaped Milan rejection of Lohengrin. The premise for this archeo-genealogical investigation is that musical events cannot be separated from the discourses (in a Foucault-like sense) that frame and feed them. Another fundamental aspect that must be considered is the complexity of identity dynamics which characterizes Milan culture soon after Italian unification. As Axel Körner affirms, referring to Parma and Bologna, «the cities’ cultural representation speaks a local language as well as national and transnational language». This is true, even more, for Milan

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Trace element distribution in eclogites and their clinopyroxene/garnet pair:a case study from Soazza (Switzerlan)

Rare earth element (REE) abundances have been determined in six samples of metabasites from the Pennidic Adula nappe in the area of Soazza (Mesolcina Valley, Switzerland). The samples cover a broad range of mineralogical composition from eclogite to epidote amphibolite through symplectitic garnet amphibolite. The REE patterns do not vary significantly and indicate a common origin of these rocks as "normal" mid-ocean ridge basalts (N-MORB). Two main eclogitic phases, clinopyroxene (cpx) and garnet (grt), have also been analysed for REE and other trace elements (Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr). The incorporation of REE and most trace elements in structural sites of cpx and grt is in accordance with that expected mainly from an evaluation of site geometry, ionic radius and charge balance and is therefore dependent on the major-element composition of the host phases. The changes in cpx/grt partition coefficients (Di) for HREE are particularly associated with the temperature condition of the equilibration of the pair

Chromatic weathering of black limestone quarried in Varenna (Lake Como, Italy)

The causes of chromatic weathering in black limestone have been investigated on samples from the main quarry of Varenna (Lake Como, Italy), which provided building stones for Lombard architecture. Our studies have been carried out combing colorimetric, mineralogical, chemical, microstructural and geochemical observations. The results suggest that the chromatic weathering affecting the surfaces of black limestone is not due to oxidation of the original organic matter present in the bulk, as believed. Chemical and mechanical weathering associated with the deposition of new organic matter are the most important phenomena occurring on the surface, leading to a diffuse roughness of surface and de-cohesion

The study of α-quartz reactivity towards alkali-silica reaction by X-ray powder diffraction

    No full text
The present study is a contribution to the understanding of α-quartz reactivity towards the alkali-silica reaction (ASR), based on the use of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) line broadening. In particular the relationship between α-quartz structural disorder and its potential alkali reactivity towards ASR was investigated by combining traditional and advanced analytical techniques. Two aggregates were characterised by means of optical, physical and chemical analyses. Their potential alkali-reactivity was then tested by the ultra-accelerated mortar-bar test (RILEM AAR-2). Moreover a full profile analysis by XRPD was performed to extract the microstructural features (crystallite size and microstrain) of α-quartz in two aggregates, revealing its degree of structural order. By comparing the mortar bar results with those from the XRPD analysis, a correlation between α-quartz microstructural features and its reactivity towards ASR is highlighted, even if the microstructural features of α-quartz were not the only parameter to be considered.
