    Essential and toxic elements in meat of wild and bred animals

    Essential and toxic elements were determined by Energy Dispersive Polarised X-Rays Fluorescence Spectrometry (EDPXRF) in the meat of 145 wild and bred animals to provide the baseline data regarding meat of wild and bred animals consumed in central Italy. As far as K, Fe, Ni, Zn and Cu are concerned, no significant differences resulted between young and adult classes and between males and females for farmed and wild animals; no differences were found between the hunted and not hunted animals classes. In all samples analyzed, Mn, Cr and Mo resulted below the detection limit. As far as the non essential or toxic elements are concerned, As, Cd, V and Hg concentrations in muscle from wild and bred animals were very low and they were always below the detection limits. Among the wild animals killed with lead bullets, elevated lead concentrations in tissues were found: this fact may result in elevated lead doses from meat ingested by humans

    Radioactivity measurements and dosimetric evaluation in meat of wild and bred animals in central Italy

    This research was dedicated to the study of the background activity concentration of natural radionuclides and 137Cs in meat of wild and farm animals from central Italy. This meat is largely consumed by the local population and also exported to different countries. 40K, 210Pb, 214Pb, 214Bi and 137Cs were determined by gamma spectrometry, 210Po by alpha spectrometry. The mean 40K activity concentration resulted 415±56 Bq kg-1dw. In all samples, 210Pb was below the detection limit (<18.9 Bq kg-1 dw). The 214Pb and 214Bi activity concentration was detectable in only 33.1% of samples with a mean value of 3.5±1.2 Bq kg-1dw. The 210Po activity concentration ranged between 0.02±0.002 Bq kg-1dw(pig) and 3.13±0.31 Bq kg-1dw(deer) with a mean value of 0.48±0.42 Bq kg-1 dw. A significant difference can be noticed between the 210Po concentration in the meat of wild specimens and the 210Po concentration in those reared. Instead, no difference can be observed between male and female species and between adult and young species. The 137Cs activity concentration resulted or not detectable or near to detection limit except in a few samples of boar and roe deer. The effective dose from 210Po ingested by eating bovine, and pig and wild animal meat accounts only for 0.03-0.11% of the natural radiation exposure in Italy

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Il problema della contaminazione da 137Cs in pellets di legno in importazione è stato segnalato in Italia a partire da giugno 2009. Da allora campionamenti ed analisi radiometriche sono stati eseguiti, su richiesta degli uffici delle Dogane e di Sanità di confine anche ai valichi delle province di Trieste e Gorizia. In questo lavoro vengono esposti i risultati delle analisi relative a campionamenti eseguiti nel periodo agosto 2010 – marzo 2012 che hanno riguardato complessivamente oltre 1600 tonnellate di prodotto di varie origini, importato dall’Est Europa e dai Balcani. Le analisi, effettuate tramite spettrometria gamma ad alta risoluzione con rivelatori al germanio iperpuro, hanno permesso di determinare quantitativamente gli emettitori gamma naturali ed artificiali. I risultati dell’attività di monitoraggio hanno fornito valori medi di concentrazione di attività di 137Cs nelle pellets dell’ordine di 10 Bq kg-1; tuttavia sono state individuate alcune partite di pellets con concentrazioni di 137Cs maggiori di 100 Bq kg-1. Alcune di queste sono state incenerite e le ceneri analizzate per il contenuto di 137Cs. I risultati da noi ottenuti e le stime di dose ai gruppi critici della popolazione nell’impiego di pellets per combustione e nella manipolazione delle ceneri sono di supporto per la scelta di un livello di riferimento o di un limite di legge per il contenuto di 137Cs nelle pellets

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
