Profile of the Italian farmer : The main entrepreneurial types

    No full text
The aim of this work was to schematise the main strategic profiles found in Italian farming. In a scenario of widespread structural weakness in Italy's agricultural sector, we found a broad entrepreneurial area where farmers with a high risk of extinction work together with farmers who are able to allocate their family resources efficiently both within and outside their farms. In this context, it would be appropriate to implement a new framework of public intervention in the agricultural sector in Europe, which would consider the overall features belonging to the family's objective function in decision-making, such as the presence of work outside the farm. In Italy, the rationale of the farmers' decision-making process is chiefly consistent with the overall socio-economic environment surrounding the family, as confirmed by our econometric analysis. Although the income level of the different types introduced in the analysis is positively affected by the presence of public support, total aid appears unable to provide a stimulus for farmers, generating considerable farm revenue dependent of off-farm income for their survival

Natural Vs Financial Insurance in the Management of Weather Risk Exposure in the Italian Agriculture

This paper seeks to contribute to these different strands of literature, by providing empirical evidence of the determinants of the decision to insure and its implications on farmers’ welfare under uncertainty. We test for the role of crop biodiversity on the probability of adopting an insurance scheme. We then analyze the role of insurance and diversification on farmers welfare under risk. To this end we estimate a stochastic production function a’ la Antle (1983) where biodiversity and insurance are regressed against the three moments of the distribution of revenues. To take into account of the potential endogeneity of the variable insurance we estimate a treatment-effects model by using a full maximum likelihood estimator. The treatment-effects model considers the effect of an endogenously chosen insurance binary treatment on another endogenous continuous variable, conditional on two sets of independent variables. Data are drawn from a very rich panel data form Italy. We have access to 8500 farmers from 2004 to 2007 (more than 25000 observations). To our knowledge this is the first empirical analysis, in this strand of literature, that make use of such large set of information

Negative externalities of crop insurance subsidies: a case study in Italy

This study evaluates the impacts of risk management policies on the environment. The effects of public risk management programmes, such as subsidised crop insurance on optimal nitrogen fertilizer use and land allocation to crops, were examined empirically by developing a mathematical programming model of a representative wheat-tomato farm in Puglia, a region in southern Italy. The results show that with current crop insurance programmes, for tomato the optimal nitrogen fertilizer rate slighty increases and the optimal acreage substantially increases, whereas for wheat they both decrease. Hence, this type of public intervention could lead to an increase in surface and groundwater pollution by nitrates

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
