Computation of quadrature rules for integration with respect to refinable functions on assigned nodes
Integrals involving refinable functions are of interest in several applications ranging from discretization of PDEs to wavelet analysis. We present a procedure to construct quadrature rules with assigned nodes for these integrals. The process requires in input the refinement mask coefficients and the sequence of nodes only. The corresponding weights are computed by an iterative procedure that does not involve the solution of linear systems. The proposed approach is deeply based on the strong connection between balanced measures and integrals of refinable functions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The association of pleural mesothelioma and tuberculosis
The relationship between pleural mesothelioma and asbestosis is universally accepted. Less importance has been given to its connection with chronic pleural disease, particularly tuberculosis. In a group of 35 patients affected with mesothelioma, neoplasm arose in 3 patients with calcific pleural tuberculosis, at a ratio of 1:8.5. The cause may have been indirect chronic stimulation or even direct action from oncogenic substances contained in the pleura
I disembriomi del mediastino. Considerazioni cliniche su 38 casi
On the basis of personal observation of 38 cases of mediastinal dysembryoma seen over an 11 year period, the main statistical and anatomopathological problems of these neoplasias are examined. The symptomatological picture created by these tumors depends on the pressure exerted on nearby organs, but very often their discovery is due to a chance X-ray. However, only surgery and subsequent histology can provide an exact diagnosis; surgery is curative only in benign cases. The prognosis for malignant cases, on the other hand, is disappointing since after operation they are insensitive to further treatment
I tumori vascolari del polmone
The authors report their experience with 7 cases of vascular pulmonary tumours, some of which are extremely uncommon. After indicating the possible anatomicopathological classification, which argument is still under discussion, they describe clinical manifestations and radiological patterns typical of this neoplasm
Analysis of parabolic problems on partitioned domains with nonlinear conditions at the interface. Application to mass transfer through semi-permeable membranes.
In this work we address a problem governed by linear parabolic partial differential equations set in two adjoining domains, coupled by nonlinear interface conditions of Neumann type. In particular, we address the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions by applying the strong maximum principle, the Schauder fixed point theorem and the fundamental solutions of linear parabolic partial differential equations. In the first part of this work, we consider the properties of a linear parabolic partial differential equation set on a single domain with a nonlinear boundary condition. After having addressed the well-posedness and some comparison results for the problem on one domain, in the second part of this work we address the case of coupled problems on adjoining domains. In both cases, we complete the understanding of the behavior of the solution of the problems at hand by means of numerical simulations. The theoretical results obtained here are applied to study the behavior of a biological model for the transfer of chemicals through thin biological membranes. This model represents the dynamics of the concentration u of a chemical solution separated from the exterior by a semi-permeable membrane. The analysis of the two-domain problem that we carry out could also be used to investigate the convergence property of iterative substructuring methods applied to the approximation of multidomain problems with nonlinear coupling of Neumann typ
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
