Fatal Racial Encounters in the US in the Media Representation

    No full text
Discussions of such interrelated notions as identity, citizenship, ethnicity, and race are usually formulated in reference to the present trends of immigration and/or globalisation. However, when dealing with cultural dis–encounters in the US, such issues dramatically emerge at the intra–national level and do not refer to migration flows, but to the historically problematic relationship between Black and White populations. In the contemporary US scenario, we witness violent nationwide racial confrontations, as well as thought–provoking debates on such issues. Notable examples of violent racially–biased interactions can be found in the frequent killings of unarmed African–American men by white police officers in the US. Among recent front–page cases are the deaths of Eric Garner in New York City (July 17, 2014) and Mike Brown (August 9, 2014) in Ferguson (MO), which can be seen as two instances of the same tragedy, on both the personal and social levels. Those killings were followed by months of nationwide protests and rioting, calls for justice and voluminous news–media coverage, all of which constitute the focus of this study. A key issue at stake in these stories is racial profiling: these deaths are a stern reminder that race still plays a critical role in how the law is enforced in the US. Apparently, a persistent identity and empathy gap is still generating conflictual mixed socio–cultural interactions. The fact that no police officers in these cases have been brought to trial has had a disruptive impact on societal values and belief systems, which in our web–wired arena is still resonating beyond socio–geographical boundaries. The role of the media in this chain of events cannot easily be overvalued, owing to their ever–growing potential to intersect the plurality of the existing communication channels, and to rapidly engage with (news media) audiences. In particular, through the fluid and virtually global semiosphere of the Worldwide Web, many (old and new) newspapers increasingly disseminate and amplify their news by utilising both real–time, cross–media communication and hyper–textual links to additional sources (which, in turn, lead to other sources, and so on). Moreover, on many newspaper websites different genres share contiguous spaces, such as more traditional articles alongside freer ‘voices’, blogs, forums, tweets, social media, as in the case of The Huffington Post (the liberal– oriented American online news aggregator), featuring Black Voices, Gay Voices, etc. The aim of this study is to analyse both qualitative and quantitative data from the news coverage of the protests following these killings. Samples extracted from the HuffPost website, both from the articles and from the Black Voices bloggers’ posts will be comparatively analysed along the evaluative dimension, by utilising some of the Appraisal Framework categories, with a special focus on «Attribution» (White 2012), with its evaluative implications. The main difference between the journalists’ and bloggers’ voices can be found in their degree of personalisation/impersonalisation, as will be shown and discussed in this study

    Prefazione introduttiva e metodologica

It is mainly within and around Mediterranean itineraries that the European Union seeks its in/tangible cultural heritage, an important component of both individual and collective identities. This volume brings together different strands of analysis, helping to shed light on the multifaceted entities that constitute the vibrant socio-semiotic landscape of the Mediterranean. The volume views this scenario from a cross-cultural perspective, and investigates the domains of national identities and stereotypes, advertising and social media, TV series, myths and festivals, landscapes, culture-bound terms, migrating words and food. Given the variety of perspectives and methodological approaches with a specific focus on the prominent role of English in representing the Mediterranean heritage, despite the fact that it is a non-Mediterranean language, this volume can offer useful insights to students and practitioners of discourse analysis, bridging the gap between academic research and class practice at the university level. From an educational perspective the book, which also includes practical worksheets, can be used in first and second level degrees in Foreign Languages, Communication, Political Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies, as well as courses in linguistics, multimodal studies, critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics

Development of diagnostic and manipulation systems for space-charge dominated electron beams and confined electron plasmas in ELTRAP

Modifications have been implemented in the Penning-Malmberg device ELTRAP aimed at performing studies on the dynamics of space-charge dominated nanosecond electron bunches traveling along the magnetic field. In particular, a Thomson backscattering apparatus has been developed where an infrared (IR) laser pulse collides with the bunched electron beam. The frequency-shifted backscattered radiation, acquired by means of a photomultiplier (PMT), can be exploited to evaluate information on energy, energy spread and density of the bunch. The achievable sensitivity of the diagnostics has been estimated, and valuable information on the main parameters affecting the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio has been obtained [B. Paroli, F. Cavaliere, M. Cavenago, F. De Luca, M. Ikram, G. Maero, C. Marini, R. Pozzoli, and M. Romé, JINST 7, P01008 (2012)]. A series of upgrades are under way, aimed at increasing the S/N ratio through the use of a new laser for the electron source, the insertion of a stray light shield, and the optimization of the detection electronics. Moreover, electromagnetic simulations relevant to the design and implementation of a microwave heating system are presented. The generation of an electron plasma in ELTRAP by means of a low-power radio frequency (RF) drive in the MHz range applied on one of the trap electrodes and under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions has previously been demonstrated [B. Paroli, F. De Luca, G. Maero, F. Pozzoli, and M. Romé, Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 19, 045013 (2010)]. The new heating system will allow the extension of the RF studies to the GHz range and in particular the production of a more energetic electron plasma via cyclotron resonant excitation

Explorıng the Onlıne Advertısıng of the Maltese Archıpelago’s Herıtage through Ecostylıstıcs

Applying the theoretical and methodological paradigm of ecostylistics to analyse the sections “What to See & Do”, "Places”, “About Malta”, and “Gozo and Comino” of the official tourist portal of the Maltese archipelago, the aim of the contribution is to identify what linguistic and textual strategies are used, within a more general framework of tourism discourse, to represent Malta a) as a site for heritage tourism (Dallen and Boyd 2003; Park 2014), and b) as “truly Mediterranean”. More specifically, an ecostylistic analysis of one written text presented in the section “What to See & Do” will be carried out, in order to distinguish those linguistic features which form part of the language of tourism from those stylistic features of Malta’s official tourism website that, far from being deployed to describe and provide information about spaces, places and landscapes, are utilised as implicit persuasive means (Östman 2005) to promote the archipelago as a tourist destination worth visiting for its history, heritage, culture and Mediterranean appeal. In addition, a brief examination of the keywords ‘Mediterranean’ and ‘history’, ‘heritage’, ‘culture’ in the pages crosslinked to the text analysed will be offered, in order to provide further co-textual support to the findings of the ecostylistic analysis
