    Urban assemblage, repair, ragionevolezza

The contribution is conceived as a conversation between Filippo Cattapan and Angelo Lunati, respectively in the guise of theorist and architect, on the possibility of a rational architecture that is not based solely on technical and material issues, but also and above all on disciplinary ones, of formal, urban and compositional nature. A critical and theoretical reflection will be accompanied by a timely exchange on a series of projects by onsitestudio, Milanese practice of which Angelo is partner together with Giancarlo Floridi. In particular, the following case studies will be discussed: the Sassuolo football centre as an example of construction linked to the building tradition of its territory, the Garibaldi block in Milano as a prototype of urban transformation and strategic prefabrication, the restoration of the former Ansaldo factories as an adaptive reuse of industrial space, the design of the new BEIC library as public monument and passive energy device. If the contemporary condition of scarcity undoubtedly calls for a substantial technical rationalisation of building practices, this must not become, in our opinion, the first horizon of an architecture. The current tendency to direct design discourses on sustainability appears needed as much as risky, as it seems to lead towards a new disciplinary hegemony of technique. This reductive form of technical rationalism is exactly what post-war architettura razionale has struggled to escape. In opposition to a mere aesthetics of sustainability, that is often rendered with an appearance of bricolage, we will propose to revisit once again a broader tradition of thought, a bricoleur rationality based on the notions of context, urbanity and continuity. It is the tradition of Adolf Behne and James M. Richards, but also of Aldo Rossi and Oswald Mathias Ungers, of Colin Rowe and thus of Isaiah Berlin and Karl Popper. It is also the natural field of a certain Milanese rationalism, we might perhaps say pragmatism, on which onsitestudio has reflected at length and in whose trajectory they have tried to place their work

The paper proposes a specific method for GMO detection in energetic bar. The extraction method is based upon the use of a buffer, TRIS-HCl, containing Proteinase K. The DNA extracted is subjected to two Nested PCR: the first one to amplify the Soy specific lectin gene; the second one to amplify the heterologous gene of transgenic soy. The proposed method results particularly efficient in case of food preparation with complex matrices

    No full text

International design competition for the redevelopment of St. Amandus Church into a library and liturgical space in Strombeek-Bever (Belgium)

Surgery for Residual Inferior Left-to-Right Atrial Shunt

We report the case of three female patients who were scheduled for surgical correction of residual left-to-right shunt after initial repair of sinus venosus atrial septal defect (SV-ASD) during childhood. After excluding the possibility of an hemodynamic intervention, all three patients underwent a successful surgical closure through a right mini sub-axillary approach by using total peripheral cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass and leaving the inferior vena cava completely un-snared allowing for an optimal visualization of the residual atrial septal communication and avoiding extensive dissection of mediastinal structures

Preoperative Transcatheter Diagnosis of Right Atrial Hemangioma

A 34-year-old man with unremarkable past medical history presents with night sweats and a recent diagnosis of intracardiac mass. The initial diagnostic workup did not provide a definitive diagnosis, so a cardiac biopsy under intracardiac echocardiography guidance was performed, revealing a hemangioma, which was then successfully resected. Spermine-mediated Casein Kinase II-uptake By Rat-liver Mitochondria

    No full text
Spermine, ubiquitous intracellular polyamine, is able to promote the transmembrane translocation of casein kinase CKII through the outer membrane of rat liver mitochondria and its binding to more internal mitochondrial structures. These findings suggest that spermine may play a critical role in regulating the subcellular distribution of casein kinase CKII

Spermine Effect On the Binding of Casein Kinase-I To the Rat-liver Mitochondrial Structures

The results indicated here, together with those previously reported, show that spermine, ubiquitous polyamine, while promoting the transmembrane translocation of casein kinase II (CKII) across the outer membrane to more internal compartments of rat liver mitochondria, promotes the binding of casein kinase I (CKI) to the external surface of outer mitochondrial membrane but inhibits its spontaneously occurring binding to more internal structures. Jazz drummers recruit language-specific areas for the processing of rhythmic structure

Rhythm is a central characteristic of music and speech, the most important domains of human communication using acoustic signals. Here, we investigated how rhythmical patterns in music are processed in the human brain, and, in addition, evaluated the impact of musical training on rhythm processing. Using fMRI, we found that deviations from a rule-based regular rhythmic structure activated the left planum temporale together with Broca's area and its right-hemispheric homolog across subjects, that is, a network also crucially involved in the processing of harmonic structure in music and the syntactic analysis of language. Comparing the BOLD responses to rhythmic variations between professional jazz drummers and musical laypersons, we found that only highly trained rhythmic experts show additional activity in left-hemispheric supramarginal gyrus, a higher-order region involved in processing of linguistic syntax. This suggests an additional functional recruitment of brain areas usually dedicated to complex linguistic syntax processing for the analysis of rhythmical patterns only in professional jazz drummers, who are especially trained to use rhythmical cues for communication
