Election, Brotherhood and Inheritance: A Canonical Reading of the Esau and Edom Traditions

    No full text
What is the reader of the Bible to make of Esau, Jacob’s brother? Why is Israel’s neighbor Edom treated so harshly in the prophetic literature? And how might one understand the relationship of these traditions? This study engages these questions by offering a canonical reading of the Esau and Edom traditions of the Hebrew Bible in light of the theological issue of election, looking specifically at the portrayal of Esau and Edom in Genesis, Deuteronomy, and the prophetic material. First, it is argued that the depiction of Esau in Genesis is, on the whole, positive. Though the unchosen son, Esau is blessed and responds well to the challenges life presents him with. Thus, the unchosen brother is by no means cursed or excluded from the divine economy. These motifs find resonance in Deuteronomy, which in particular construes the issue of land possession in explicitly theological language, while reinforcing the kinship motif. Second, it is put forward that Edom is portrayed negatively by the prophets for violating a relationship of brotherhood, and for disrespecting the divine apportioning of the lands. It is this twofold rejection of their brother Israel as well as YHWH who has appointed the lands that helps account for the harsh message of the prophets. And third, it is suggested that these two traditions have resonance with one another based on their overarching theological concerns, heuristically labeled brotherhood and inheritance. Returning to the issue of election, it is proposed that these themes may helpfully be understood within the theological categories of divine initiative and human response, as the response of those involved is taken up in YHWH’s own responsiveness, whether in blessing or judgment

The employee initiative toolkit: An approach to increase the effectiveness of employee initiatives for new service development

Companies understand the importance of employees’ engagement in its innovation capability. The contact between employees and customers is a great way to spark new opportunities for ideas relevant for customers (Kelly & Storey, 2000), they have in-depth and highly context-dependent operational knowledge and have creative potential. They make an interesting often unused source for innovation potential. In the case a single employee or a small team of employees that are not assigned to the task are indeed the sources of the generation and implementation of such new ideas, products and processes, it can be called employee-driven innovation (EDI). Many organisations, therefore, try to engage employees and facilitate employee-driven innovation to increase its innovation capability. With the current global trend of servitization, which is the process to extend the customer relationship by bringing value also after a product purchase, companies will invest in the development of services. When companies would like to increase their innovation capability through employee-driven innovation, employees will therefore likely be expected to create ideas for services in which they are often not educated or trained. One of the challenges for a company in employee-driven innovation is to create and sustain a company culture and environment that generates the right conditions for this. Especially if this should be supportive of new service development, as services have intangible qualities that make it harder to test the actual value for the customer even with educated staff. Hence, the first aim of this thesis is to understand the challenges and effective ways of organising employee-driven innovation for new service development. Through a literature review and participatory design sessions with employees from a service solution provider, I created an approach that displays what the managerial, organisational and employee roles can do to facilitate employee-driven innovation in three parallel steps. In addition, TOPdesk, an ESM service solution provider, was also interested in increasing its innovation capability through employee-driven innovation. They captured their interest in a company objective that aims to create profit from a new market, coming from employee initiatives. I found that TOPdesk employees need guidance and support in their employee initiatives, to enable them to create and develop new service ideas. Therefore, the second part of this thesis is about creating a design toolkit that fulfils these needs and an implementation design roadmap in order to facilitate employee-driven innovation at TOPdesk. The employee initiative toolkit is a structured approach that guides and enables employees with new service ideas to effectively explore its value with the goal to convince the management team it should become a new service for TOPdesk. Through covering idea selection criteria, aspects of a business plan and pitch canvas, employees are able to do this. The purpose of this toolkit is to increase the effectiveness of employee initiatives for new services and therefore contribute to implementing employee-driven innovation for new service development and reaching their company objective to increase its innovation capability.Strategic Product Desig

Attitudes toward sexuality in the Book of Ben Sira

The fact that Ben Sira seemingly has a negative attitude towards women or femininity can easily lead to the assumption that the work has a negative attitude toward sexuality. However, this thesis will seek to demonstrate that the author's view on sexuality is complex, subtle, and depends on the context of the individual sayings. First of all we have to make a distinction between the attitudes of the writer of the original Hebrew text of the book and that of the Greek translator. The two texts, produced in different social settings, circumstances, times and places, differ substantially at times in regard to sexuality. Therefore it is essential to treat them separately and to compare them. In addition, the Book of Ben Sira, the longest Jewish wisdom book, is a complex combination of carefully composed wisdom poems that structure the whole work, and of teachings on everyday issues including marriage, family life, self-control, desires and passions, and sexual promiscuity. The openness about issues of eroticism that characterizes some of the poems concerning personified female wisdom is unprecedented in the wisdom writings of Second Temple Judaism. Similarly, the sage dedicates a greater number of passages than other wisdom books, to the discussion of social relations especially in regard to family. In so doing his regular point of departure seems to be what benefits or damages these relations mean, and whether they bring disgrace to a person, especially through sexuality. These all have bearings on the author’s and translator’s views of sexuality, including the position a person or situation under discussion might have in the sage’s social value system. Therefore the thesis examines the wisdom poems, and all sayings that concern sexuality found in discussions of passions, relations with parents, daughters and sons, wives and husbands, and warnings against sexual wrongdoing, including prostitution and adultery. All this is done with a special regard to the differences between the Hebrew original text and the Greek translation

    Hen-296(1988) The Inclusive

At 250 GeV/c, the inclusive ß + =ß \Gamma ratio is similar for the fragmentation region of ß + p, K + p and pp collisions. From a comparison to results at lower energies and from negative meson beams a long range charge flow is deduced. For all energies, this effect is strongly underestimated by currently used low-p T models. 1 Onderzoeker IIKW, Brussels, Belgium 2 Bevoegdverklaard Navorser NFWO, Belgium 3 Now with Ericsson Telecommunicatie B.V., Rijen, The Netherlands 4 Now at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland 5 Partially supported by grants from CPBP 01.06 and 01.09 6 Partially funded by the German Federal Minister for Research and Technology (BMFT) under the contract number 053AC41P If no charge is exchanged between beam and target, the charge properties of target fragmentation must be independent of the type of the beam particle. On the contrary, the ratio of ß + to ß \Gamma production in the target fragmentation region has been found drastically different for po..

Multiplicity Dependence Of The Average Transverse Momentum In

The average transverse momentum hp T i has been studied as a function of the charge multiplicity n in ß + p, K + p and pp collisions at 250 GeV/c ( p s ß 22 GeV) and compared to that at other energies. The effect of cuts in rapidity and p T is demonstrated. A comparison to currently used low-p T models shows that the two-chain Dual Parton Model underestimates the experimentally observed correlation at large p T . The new version of the two-chain LUND-FRITIOF Model is better than the first version of this model, but still overestimates the correlation. 1 Onderzoeker IIKW, Brussels, Belgium 2 Bevoegdverklaard Navorser NFWO, Belgium 3 Now with Ericsson Telecommunicatie B.V., Rijen, The Netherlands 4 On leave from Institute of Nuclear Physics, Krakow 5 Now at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland 6 Partially supported by grants from CPBP 01.06 and 01.09 7 Partially funded by the German Federal Minister for Research and Technology (BMFT) under the contract number 053AC41P After a ..
