Toward a chronome of Euglena gracilis (Klebs)

    No full text
Euglena gracilis (Klebs) has extensively mapped circadians as well as hints of the biological half-week and week. It complements Acetabularia as a unicellular model in which endogenous melatonin can be manipulated. Meta-analysis hints that mapping should be extended beyond components of 24 hours, to encompass, with age, ultradians, about-half-weekly, about-weekly and other infradian changes

Gain amplification and lasing properties of individual organic nanofibers

    No full text
We study gain and lasing processes in individual self-assembled organic nanofibers grown on mica substrates. The gain-induced response of the nanofibers is found to depend sensitively on the fiber structure. In homogeneous fibers where no coherent optical feedback is present, high net optical gain (of up to 10(3) cm(-1)) results in spectral narrowing at the material gain peaks. In the case of strong optical feedback, which occurs in long nanofibers with randomly distributed scattering centers, gain is in turn responsible for low-threshold coherent random laser action

    Meaning Skepticism and Cognitive Science

In Chap. 4 of his book Knowledge of Language, Noam Chomsky deals with the meaning skepticism developed in Saul Kripke’s much discussed book Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language.1 Chomsky admits that “[o]f the various general critiques that have been presented over the years concerning the program and conceptual framework of generative grammar, this [i.e. Kripke’s] seems to me the most interesting.” (Chomsky 1986, p. 223) Nevertheless, he believes himself to be capable of refuting Kripke’s analysis simply by referring to the possibility of constructing an empirical theory about our cognitive capacities, in particular about our semantic capacities, and especially about our semantic competence with respect to the word “plus” (or the sign “+”), which serves as the main example in Kripke’s book

One-Dimensional Random Lasing in a Single Organic Nanofiber

    No full text
One-dimensional light amplification in individual p-sexiphenyl nanofibers is investigated. The influence of fiber morphology on light propagation properties is studied via optical and atomic force microscopy. Isolated nanofibers are shown to yield low-threshold random laser emission in the deep blue. Model calculations of coherent light propagation in one-dimensional random media qualitatively reproduce the experimental results. Implications for photonic nanosensors are briefly discussed

Psychological and Psychophysiological Effects of a High-Mountain Expedition to Tibet

In March 1999 a team of 8 mountaineers (6 men and 2 women) climbed up the 6th highest mountain of the world: The Cho Oyo (8201 m), located in the high mountains of Tibet. During the expedition, we investigated the effects of high mountaineering on various psychological variables (e.g., anxiety) and psychophysiological variables (e.g. blood pressure, pulse, skin-resistance) as well as the ability to relax at different points of time (2 premeasures before, three measures during, and one post-measure immediate after the Expedition). Due to a long-term monitoring of the skin resistance, we can summarize that three different adaptation levels can be defined, that appear under increasing pressure: Inhibition of overload, unspecific hypersensibility and exhaustion. The results can show that a telemedical assessment is possible and necessary even under the circumstances of a highmountaineering expedition in order to determine and predict deficits in behaviour and health risks for individuals at high altitudes
