Competition between hydrogen bonding and arene-perfluoroarene stacking : X-Ray diffraction and molecular simulation on 5,6,7,8-tetrafluoro-2-naphthoic acid and 5,6,7,8-tetrafluoro-2-naphthamide

Single crystal X-ray diffraction and PIXEL calculation of intermolecular pair energies, with partitioning into coulombic and dispersive factors, have been performed on the title crystals with the aim of testing the relative efficiency of molecular recognition synthons. X-Ray diffraction reveals that the crystals contain extended hydrogen-bonded layers, with various degrees of aromatic ring overlap between the layers. The calculation of molecular pair energies quantitatively reveals that the primary binding force in these crystals is hydrogen bonding, and that the arene-perfluoroarene stacking mode becomes less important, or almost optional. The various degrees of offset between overlapping aromatic rings found in the present crystals, also in comparison with some non-hydrogen bonding analogs, suggest a transition from perfect, highly stabilizing Ar H-Ar F overlap, to the less favourable, but still energetically stabilizing, Ar F-Ar F and Ar H-Ar H overlaps. The selectivity towards Ar H-Ar F stacking is not overwhelming

The conformational and packing properties of two encapsulated cobalt(III) complexes containing cyclo-triphosphate have been investigated. Compound (I), (1,3,6,8,10,13,16,19-octaazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane)cobalt(III) cyclo-triphosphate-water (2/7) has the trivial name cobalt(III) sepulchrate cyclo-triphosphate-water (2/7) and chemical formula [Co(sep)](P3O9).3.5H(2)O. The cation shows an lel(3) geometry very similar to those found in other sepulchrate complexes. The packing motif is given by one-dimensional chains of alternating cations and anions running along the z direction and cross-linked by hydrogen-bonded water molecules. Compound (II) is [tris(aminoethylaminomethyl)amine]tris(ethylenediamine)dicobalt(III) di(cyclo-triphosphate) octahydrate, and has the chemical formula [Co(sep')(P3O9)][Co(sep')(0.72)(en(3))(0.28)(P3O9)].8H(2)O (where sep' = C9H27N7). Pseudotranslational symmetry is found, perturbed by the substitutional disorder sep'/en(3). B-centering is therefore simulated involving the anions and water molecules. The crystal packing is similar to that found for compound (I), but the regularity of the chains is broken by the disorder

Patrelli TS, Berretta R, Rolla M, Vandi F, Capobianco G, Gramellini D, Bacchi Modena A, Nardelli GB. SourceDepartment of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology, University of Parma, Italy. [email protected] Abstract OBJECTIVE: Lymph node involvement is the single most important factor in the prognosis of endometrial cancer, because it is predictive of locoregional and distant metastases. The purpose of our study was to determine whether lymphadenectomy is useful in the surgical staging of endometrial cancer and if it may help establish a more accurate prognosis and reduce the need for postoperative therapy in patients without surgical complications. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective study on 55 patients with diagnosis of endometrial cancer. RESULTS: Surgical staging of patients undergoing pelvic lymphadenectomy (47/55) showed that 59.6% of cases (n = 28) had Stage I cancer (IA in 4, IB in 16, IC in 8), 17.02% (n = 8) Stage II (IIA in 3, IIB in 5), 21.2% (n = 10) Stage III (IIIB in 5, IIIC in 5), and 2.1% (n = 1) Stage IVA. In the remaining eight patients with a very high anesthesiologic risk (ASA 4), surgical staging was incomplete because they underwent only node palpation. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, as we wait for the sentinel lymph node technique to demonstrate satisfactory results and be standardized also for endometrial cancer, we believe that surgical lymph node dissection plays a crucial role in debulking this type of cancer. When performed by a good surgical oncology team, it does not entail a significantly increased operative risk
