Today’s scholarly communication is a document-centred process and as such, rather inefficient. Fundamental contents of research papers are not accessible by computers since they are only present in unstructured PDF files. Therefore, current research infrastructures are not able to assist scientists appropriately in their core research tasks. This thesis addresses this issue and proposes methods to automatically extract relevant information from scientific articles for Research Knowledge Graphs (RKGs) that represent scholarly knowledge structured and interlinked. First, this thesis conducts a requirements analysis for an Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG). We present literature-related use cases of researchers that should be supported by an ORKG-based system and their specific requirements for the underlying ontology and instance data. Based on this analysis, the identified use cases are categorised into two groups: The first group of use cases needs manual or semi-automatic approaches for knowledge graph (KG) construction since they require high correctness of the instance data. The second group requires high completeness and can tolerate noisy instance data. Thus, this group needs automatic approaches for KG population. This thesis focuses on the second group of use cases and provides contributions for machine learning tasks that aim to support them. To assess the relevance of a research paper, scientists usually skim through titles, abstracts, introductions, and conclusions. An organised presentation of the articles' essential information would make this process more time-efficient. The task of sequential sentence classification addresses this issue by classifying sentences in an article in categories like research problem, used methods, or obtained results. To address this problem, we propose a novel unified cross-domain multi-task deep learning approach that makes use of datasets from different scientific domains (e.g. biomedicine and computer graphics) and varying structures (e.g. datasets covering either only abstracts or full papers). Our approach outperforms the state of the art on full paper datasets significantly while being competitive for datasets consisting of abstracts. Moreover, our approach enables the categorisation of sentences in a domain-independent manner. Furthermore, we present the novel task of domain-independent information extraction to extract scientific concepts from research papers in a domain-independent manner. This task aims to support the use cases find related work and get recommended articles. For this purpose, we introduce a set of generic scientific concepts that are relevant over ten domains in Science, Technology, and Medicine (STM) and release an annotated dataset of 110 abstracts from these domains. Since the annotation of scientific text is costly, we suggest an active learning strategy based on a state-of-the-art deep learning approach. The proposed method enables us to nearly halve the amount of required training data. Then, we extend this domain-independent information extraction approach with the task of \textit{coreference resolution}. Coreference resolution aims to identify mentions that refer to the same concept or entity. Baseline results on our corpus with current state-of-the-art approaches for coreference resolution showed that current approaches perform poorly on scientific text. Therefore, we propose a sequential transfer learning approach that exploits annotated datasets from non-academic domains. Our experimental results demonstrate that our approach noticeably outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines. Additionally, we investigate the impact of coreference resolution on KG population. We demonstrate that coreference resolution has a small impact on the number of resulting concepts in the KG, but improved its quality significantly. Consequently, using our domain-independent information extraction approach, we populate an RKG from 55,485 abstracts of the ten investigated STM domains. We show that every domain mainly uses its own terminology and that the populated RKG contains useful concepts. Moreover, we propose a novel approach for the task of \textit{citation recommendation}. This task can help researchers improve the quality of their work by finding or recommending relevant related work. Our approach exploits RKGs that interlink research papers based on mentioned scientific concepts. Using our automatically populated RKG, we demonstrate that the combination of information from RKGs with existing state-of-the-art approaches is beneficial. Finally, we conclude the thesis and sketch possible directions of future work.

Web-based learning has become an integral part of everyday life for all ages and backgrounds. On the one hand, the advantages of this learning type, such as availability, accessibility, flexibility, and cost, are apparent. On the other hand, the oversupply of content can lead to learners struggling to find optimal resources efficiently. The interdisciplinary research field Search as Learning is concerned with the analysis and improvement of Web-based learning processes, both on the learner and the computer science side. So far, automatic approaches that assess and recommend learning resources in Search as Learning (SAL) focus on textual, resource, and behavioral features. However, these approaches commonly ignore multimodal aspects. This work addresses this research gap by proposing several approaches that address the question of how multimodal retrieval methods can help support learning on the Web. First, we evaluate whether textual metadata of the TIB AV-Portal can be exploited and enriched by semantic word embeddings to generate video recommendations and, in addition, a video summarization technique to improve exploratory search. Then we turn to the challenging task of knowledge gain prediction that estimates the potential learning success given a specific learning resource. We used data from two user studies for our approaches. The first one observes the knowledge gain when learning with videos in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) setting, while the second one provides an informal Web-based learning setting where the subjects have unrestricted access to the Internet. We then extend the purely textual features to include visual, audio, and cross-modal features for a holistic representation of learning resources. By correlating these features with the achieved knowledge gain, we can estimate the impact of a particular learning resource on learning success. We further investigate the influence of multimodal data on the learning process by examining how the combination of visual and textual content generally conveys information. For this purpose, we draw on work from linguistics and visual communications, which investigated the relationship between image and text by means of different metrics and categorizations for several decades. We concretize these metrics to enable their compatibility for machine learning purposes. This process includes the derivation of semantic image-text classes from these metrics. We evaluate all proposals with comprehensive experiments and discuss their impacts and limitations at the end of the thesis.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Mutimedia retrieval, a developed methodology based on information retrieval, is broadly used in the digitalised society. When searching videos online, they need to be sorted according to their relevance. However, most approaches calculate the relevance only from basic content information. This thesis aims to analyse the relevance in multiple modalities. For the specific case of lecture videos, features from following modalities are extracted from corresponding course materials: audio, linguistic, and visual modality. Furthermore, cross-modal features are specifically first proposed in this thesis and calculated by processing audio, images, transcripts, and texts. A user evaluation has been conducted to collect user's opinions with regards to these generated features. The results have shown that most features can reflect a video in multiple aspects. The way the learning effect is influenced by these features is considered as well. For further research, this study builds a solid base for feature extraction and gains a better understanding of learning

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Development and Evaluation of Coding Schemes for Analyzing Vision Videos

An essential aspect for the success of a software project is the establishment of a mutual understanding between stakeholders and developers. This understanding is needed for the successful communication of the requirements of the system to be developed. The conventional method of textual transmission of the requirements often leads to misunderstandings. Many new approaches therefore consider the use of video for the communication of the requirements, as they bypass possible language barriers through visual representation and have greater meaningfulness than textual descriptions. A possible implementation of these approaches is the presentation of scenarios of the use of visionary systems, which are often referred to as Vision Videos. However, none of these approaches describe how exactly such Vision Videos should be produced. This work will therefore analyse existing Vision Videos regarding their presentation, content and emotions. In an experiment, existing Vision Videos are encoded according to predefined coding schemes. Then, the results of this experiment will be analysed to ultimately produce general video profiles for Vision Videos, as well as to identify common mistakes and wellknown production aspects

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
