Representations of the Stage Machiavel in Othello, King Lear and Hamlet
Seçilen tragedyalarda Makyavel karakterlerin olay gelişimini yönettiği fakat sonunda başarısızlığa uğratılarak dönem baskın inançlarının her zaman üstün geldiği saptanmıştır.The aim of this thesis is to explore the Machiavellian presentations of the villainous characters in William Shakespeare's tragedies: Othello, King Lear and Hamlet.Written by Niccolo Machiavelli, one of the most influential figures of the Italian Renaissance and today who is accepted to be the father of modern political science, The Prince, is a scientific work on the matter of governing that gathered an enormous reaction in 16th century on the grounds that religion and governance could not be drifted apart and that the factor of morality in governing could never be neglected. It is recognized that this reaction had an important impact on the expression of tyranny in the Elizabethan drama and it is observed that the villainous characters were redesigned through Machiavellian policies and traits. In the theoretical framework, the historic process from the antiquity to the Renaissance is explored and the content of The Prince is investigated. Why The Prince gained such a notorious reputation is determined and the influence of Machiavelli on England is clarified. How Machiavelli's identity and his philosophy faded into the background while his name became synonymous with the words, manipulation, duplicity and deceitfulness is explicated. In what terms and how The Prince supplied the Elizabethan playwrights are explained through allusions and a focus on Machiavellian influence on Shakespeare is investigated. In the analysis chapters, the villainous characters of Shakespeare's selected tragedies are analyzed and which Machiavellian policies and traits that Shakespeare used to associate the ideal ruler of The Prince to his tyrant characters are evaluated. Othello, King Lear and Hamlet are chosen to give a better understanding of the employment of Machiavellian thought in different dimensions and Iago, Edmund and Claudius are progressively analyzed to show the escalatory application of Machiavellian thought in personal ambitions, in acquiring kingship and in maintaining kingship. In conclusion, it is reached that the Machiavellian politics and thought had a major contribution in the reconstruction of the villains of the Elizabethan drama. Identical Machiavellian patterns of the villainous characters of the examined tragedies are determined and it is observed that Machiavellianism is put in juxtaposition to the classical moralist and aristocratic system of thought. It is resolved that this juxtaposition is used to create a discrepancy between the Machiavellian thought and the traditions and ethics of the Elizabethan society due to its consideration as a defender of atheism and immorality. It is evaluated in the selected tragedies that though the Machiavellian characters are the action dominators they are doomed to reach their anti-climax because of their Machiavellian philosophy in Elizabethan England to show the superiority of the virtues, ethics and traditions of the Elizabethans over Machiavellianism
The Bakhtinian Carnival Spirit in a Midsummer Night's Dream, as You Like It and Twelfth Night: The Chronotope, Role Reversal, Laughter, Parody and Grotesque Imagery
William Shakespeare'ın Bir Yaz Gecesi Rüyası (1595-96), Nasıl Hoşunuza Giderse (1599-1600) ve Onikinci Gece (1599-1600) adlı romantik komedileri, Mikhail Bakhtin'in teorisine uygun olarak mevcut dünya düzeninin ve geleneklerinin tersine çevrilmesini öngeren karnaval ruhunu yansıtır. 'Halk mizahı' geleneğine dayanan Bakhtin'in karnaval anlayışı, dünya düzenine yeni bir bakış açısı getirir. Anahtar Sözcükler: William Shakespeare, Bir Yaz Gecesi Rüyası, Nasıl Hoşunuza Giderse, Onikinci Gece, Bakhtin, Karnaval TeorisiWilliam Shakespeare's comedies entitled A Midsummer Night's Dream (1595-96), As You Like It (1599-1600) and Twelfth Night (1599-1600) reflect the carnival spirit in Mikhail Bakhtin's theory, which proposes the inversion of the existing world order and traditions. Based on the tradition of 'folk humour,' Bakhtin's notion of the carnival brings a new outlook on the world order. When the carnivalesque atmosphere in these plays is analysed with reference to 'role reversal,' 'chronotope,' 'parody' and 'grotesque imagery,' it is observed that, with the aim of laughter, the representatives of the usual world order are imitated, their roles are reversed and their bodies are depicted as grotesque. This forms a carnival world, which is against dogmas in the plays and reveals the relativity of truth. This carnivalesque atmosphere temporarily suspends the rules of the present hierarchical order and offers a different insight. Bakhtinian carnivalesque atmosphere created by role reversals, parody and grotesque imagery and the festivities in the background of the plays' plots, propose a different perception of the world in opposition to the authoritative order represented alongside. That provides the temporary subversion of the powerful authoritative order. The carnivalesque atmosphere in these plays serves to subvert the existing rules and traditions but at the same time creates a constructive effect on authoritative power and principles. Neo-Victorian Contexts in Contemporary British Fiction: Michel Faber's the Crimson Petal and the White, Sarah Waters's Fingersmith, and Peter Ackroyd's Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem
As a historical novel neo-Victorian novel has a new awareness about the distinction and/or discrepancy between the real past and the historical facts produced out of them. This draws the attention towards new approaches to history writing such as apocryphal history, which presents alternative versions of the past. With these contemporary developments in historiography, the evaluation of the historical novel is changed and the fictionality of history is no longer considered being immune to fictionality. As a result, the new historical novel has had to distinguish itself from its predecessor by its treatment of fact and fiction. Neo-Victorian fiction finds new opportunities in alternative representations of the past by reinforcing 'faction.' With this new insight, neo-Victorian fiction through its marginalised protagonists and depiction of the unseen lives of improper Victorians, aims at filling the gaps left by conventional Victorian novels and historiographic texts. Contemporary British culture has an interest in the Victorian era. Neo-Victorian fiction focuses on the Victorian period to evaluate the roots of the present day culture retrospectively. This belated coming to terms with the Victorian era is either for reaching more innocent times, or for finding the missing realities causing today's problems. In one way or another, especially the Victorian is remembered and the neo-Victorian fiction emerges accordingly. What neo-Victorian novels have in common is their interest in the Victorian period in particular, and history in general. Neo-Victorian novels can be regarded as the deviated versions of the conventional historical novel and its contemporary versions. As a result of the generic diversity of neo-Victorian fiction, it is difficult to define it with one statement. Each neo-Victorian novel can be described specifically by its formal features which distinguish it from others. Neo-Victorian fiction has both a classical and a new historical perspective. Neo-Victorian novelists employ different attitudes in handling their material. These attitudes are made up of by benefiting from old genres. Especially romance as a literary genre is suitable for the uses of the neo-Victorian authors. By taking John Fowles's novel The French Lieutenant's Woman (that carries the features of romance) as an example, this dissertation focuses on three neo-Victorian novels: Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White (2002); Sarah Waters's Fingersmith (2002); and Peter Ackroyd's Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem (1994). Through the analysis of these books, varying types of neo-Victorian fiction is presented since they depict the Victorian era distinctively in terms of their forms and contents. These novel types are romance, sensation and crime novels respectively but in a sexualised way. The features of these conventional novel genres are re-used from a presentist scope that remembers the past by reinforcing Victorian sexuality. Still, the main contribution of these neo-Victorian novels to the contemporary literature is their re-evaluation of the historical novel conventions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
