    Narratives of political struggle in Frederic Rzewski’s Four Pieces

    This dissertation reads a narrative of political struggle in Frederic Rzewski’s 1976 composition Four Pieces for solo piano. As with many of Rzewski’s other politically themed works, Four Pieces is rich with allusions to folk song and political struggle. Rzewski applies compositional techniques to the primary musical ideas of Four Pieces that directly suggest concepts of social struggle and violence. Throughout his life, Rzewski identified politically with leftist ideas, often exploring themes on anti-war sentiment, popular struggle against oppressive power structures, and labor songs. This work expands on the ideas of literary theorists like Roland Barthes, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Gérard Genette who emphasize the reader’s importance in interpreting a text, as well as analyses of narrative in music developed by Elaine Sisman, Michael Klein, Robert Hatten, Richard Cone, and Eero Tarasti. Analysis of Four Pieces specifically draws on Northrop Frye’s literary narrative theories and Byron Almen’s extension of Frye’s concepts to the musical domain, the author developed a framework through which to hear a narrative in Rzewski’s Four Pieces. According to this framework, musical narrative emerges as an interplay between the poles of order and transgression, where order connotes an established dominant hierarchy and transgression connotes forces that disperse or struggle against the elements of order. Given Rzewski’s ideological alignments and his treatment of political topics this dissertation argues that Four Pieces can be read as a narrative in which transgression represents an oppressed subject or subjects that struggles against a dominant order that represents oppressive power structures responsible for fomenting chaos and preventing unity. A live performance by the author of Four Pieces, recorded in March 2012 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is included as four supplementary .wav files titled “Piece 1,” “Piece 2,” “Piece 3,” and “Piece 4.

    ENGLISH Landslides and avalanches in natural lakes and reservoirs may generate so-called impulse waves. The run-up effects of these waves at the shore are similar to those of tsunamis. Hydraulic experiments in the laboratory help to estimate key wave characteristics, including the wave height and celerity. The picture presents two images of an experiment in the wave basin of the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW) at ETH Zurich. At the upper left, the moment shortly after the slide has hit the water surface is shown. The slide transfers its kinetic energy to the water and generates a wave. In the section on the lower right, the waves have propagated circularly from the impact location. The water is dyed white so that a grid can be projected onto the surface. During the experiment, this raster projection is simultaneously filmed by several cameras and the analysis of the image data allows for an accurate determination of the wave height decay. Im Ausschnitt unten rechts haben sich die Wellen kreisförmig von der Eintauchstelle weg ausgebreitet. Das Wasser ist weiss eingefärbt, damit ein Raster auf die Oberfläche projiziert werden kann.     Onderzoek naar de toepasbaarheid van offshore golfbrekers langs de Nederlandse kust

    Allereerst worden in een korte probleem-analyse de belangrijkste elementen voor het gevraagde onderzoek uiteengezet (hoofdstuk 2), resulterend in een pakket van eisen waaraan enerzijds de constructie in principe zal moeten voldoen en anderzijds de (potentiële) lokatie(s). In het daarop volgende hoofdstuk 3 wordt een voorstel gedaan ten aanzien van de mogelijke plaatsen langs de Nederlandse kust waar dit golfbreker-concept succesvol kan zijn en de hieruit te selecteren voorbeeld-lokaties. Na overleg met de door TAW-C aangewezen begeleidingsgroep zijn drie nader uit te werken voorbeeld-lokaties vastgesteld. Voor dit drietal is onderzocht wat het effect van offshore golfbrekers kan zijn. Hiertoe is eerst ingegaan op de achtergronden van een dergelijke toepassing en de effecten die hiervan het gevolg kunnen zijn (hoofdstuk 4), gevolgd door de meer specifieke ontwerp-parameters voor de golfbrekers zelf (hoofdstuk 5). In hoofdstuk 6 worden de randvoorwaarden per voorbeeld-lokatie bepaald. Op basis van deze informatie wordt vervolgens in hoofdstuk 7 overgegaan op de toepassing van de ontwerpregels voor Nederlandse omstandigheden, resulterend in initiële ontwerpen en de bepaling van de effecten. Op basis hiervan wordt een beoordeling gegeven ten aanzien van de toepassing van de vuistregels voor de Nederlandse condities, gevolgd door een bepaling van de morfologische effecten c.g. effectiviteit van de initiële ontwerpen (hoofdstuk 8). Hierna worden de ontwerpen constructief verder uitgewerkt (hoofdstuk 9), o.a. ten behoeve van de bepaling van de kosten en de algehele economische afweging (hoofdstuk 10). Tenslotte wordt dit rapport afgesloten met conclusies en aanbevelingen (hoofdstuk 11).TAW/EN

    Freshwater (paleo)tsunamis – a review

    In freshwater systems (rivers and lakes), historical and recent tsunamis have been documented and their traces have been found in the geological record, but studies of paleotsunamis (prehistorical tsunamis) in such environ- ments are still underrepresented. This contribution reviews paleotsunami studies with a focus on the post −2011 period and uses historical events to highlight some areas of research that have received little attention. In the past decade, the number of paleotsunami studies has increased and this includes those carried out over freshwa- ter settings. However, studies of lacustrine paleotsunamis compared to studies on marine paleotsunamis are still rare and those for rivers are to our knowledge non-existent. Similarly, studies of historical tsunamis generated by meteorological disturbances have been carried out but there have been none for their paleotsunami counterpart. Thus, within this review, to cover all different aspects of tsunami generation processes in freshwater systems, we have used several historical examples, although there is a notable focus on lacustrine paleotsunamis. This review shows that future studies of freshwater paleotsunamis are necessary in order to better understand their causes, frequencies and hazard potential

    Collaborative Reverse Engineering Design Experiment Using PLM Solutions

    The current climate of economic competition forces businesses to adapt to the expectations of their customers. To achieve this, in spite of the increasing complexity of mechanical systems, it becomes necessary, amongst other things, to reduce design time. Faced with new challenges, practices in design training must evolve to allow students to be mindful of these evolutions as well as to be able to manage projects in these new work environments. After presenting a state of the art of collaborative tools used in product design, our paper presents an experiment focusing on the reverse engineering of a complex mechanical product. This experiment was carried out between two centers of the Arts et Métiers ParisTech School of Engineering, located in Paris and Angers.Weanalyze the results obtained in this experiment and propose a collaborative environment that is well suited to our needs for design education, based on ‘‘Product Lifecycle Managament’’ (PLM) concepts. Finally, we present some modifications in collaborative design courses for our students, and we implement network modifications in order to significantly improve the ease of use of the design environment
