Exposure to disgusting smells increases belief in conspiracy theories. A preregistered study
In a previous correlational study, we found that disgust sensitivity predicts conspiratorial thinking and that this relationship is mediated by the tendency to use a shortcut thinking style. These results may support the notion that reliance on emotions evolved to avoid pathogen threats may increase dependence on cognitive heuristics, including beliefs in conspiracy theories (CTs). However, these results were obtained from a cross-sectional study, and causal inferences are unwarranted. The aim of our proposed study is to experimentally manipulate disgust by exposing participants to disgusting vs. non-disgusting odors. Participants will be asked to endorse fictive and politically neutral CTs and solve puzzles that involve cognitive reflection. We expect that participants exposed to disgusting smells will display higher levels of endorsement of CTs and that this effect will be mediated by their accuracy in using cognitive reflection
The author discusses several debatable points (5.6, 5.27, 17.14, 25.14, 25.15 and 34.33-35.7) from Düring’s edition of Ptolemy’s Harmonica. This article is to be followed by another in which other issues (62.5, 90.15 and 94.1) will also be discussed.El autor examina varios puntos discutibles (5.6, 5.27, 17.14, 25.14, 25.15 y 34.33-35.7) de la edición de Düring del tratado de Harmonía (Harmonica) de Tolomeo. Multidisciplinary treatment of hepatocarcinoma
Radical treatment of the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is complete surgical removal; it may be done by resection or total hepatectomy. Although multicentric carcinogenesis predicts that liver transplantation is likely adequate to treat both the hepatoma and the underlying cirrhosis, it doesn't seem justified in the advanced stages or in absence of end-stage liver disease and therefore liver resection remains the treatment of choice for radical cure of HCC. However, low resectability and high recurrence rate make surgery alone ineffective. Unresectable HCC may be converted to resectable by multimodality radiation/chemotherapy, and embolization of portal branch feeding tumour, improving the function of the nonembolized liver, can extend the surgical indications for HCC. Adjuvant chemoembolization has already shown to reduce recurrence rate after radical resection and it should be widely applied. In unresectable or not converted HCCs as well as in postoperative recurrence, alternative therapies, particularly as multimodality treatment, can improve survival rate. To date, multidisciplinary treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, waiting for further studies on newer modalities (prevention and gene therapy, especially), represents the best way to improve long-term results
