    Integrating sports content into English lessons in grade 3 in primary school using the CLIL method

    Vloga športa v življenju učencev je zelo pomembna. Učenci pri učnih urah zadovoljijo svoje potrebe po gibanju, ob čemer razvijajo svoje gibalne sposobnosti in spretnosti, se telesno razvijajo ter sproščajo. Poleg tega ima tudi družbeno vlogo, saj se učenci pri učnih urah socializirajo, gradijo odnose in razvijajo svojo osebnost. Zato lahko šport zelo dobro povežemo z učenjem tujega jezika, pri katerem se učenci prav tako družijo in spoznavajo, kako pomembna je angleščina kot komunikacijsko orodje v današnjem času. V magistrskem delu smo obravnavali celostni razvoj otroka in zgodnje učenje tujega jezika, kar nas je pripeljalo do različnih pristopov zgodnjega poučevanja tujih jezikov, med katere sodi tudi pristop, imenovan CLIL (angl. Content and Language Integrated Learning). Pri učenju angleščine je vedno bolj v uporabi pristop CLIL. Temelji na tem, da učenci pridobivajo vsebinsko znanje (dosegajo cilje, ki so zapisani v učnih načrtih različnih predmetov, npr. za šport) ter pri tem uporabljajo, spoznavajo, usvajajo in se učijo tuji jezik. Takšen pristop ima za učence ogromno prednosti, kot sta večja motiviranost za učenje in širjenje splošne razgledanosti. Pri raziskovanju literature in pisanju smo se osredotočili na njegovo opredelitev, razvoj in oblike ter uporabo pristopa v Sloveniji. Ker raziskovanje temelji na povezavi predmeta šport in tujega jezika angleščine, smo se osredinili tudi na medpredmetno povezovanje teh dveh predmetov in njuna učna načrta. Ob koncu smo dodali še angleško-slovenski slovar športne terminologije, uporabne pri medpredmetnem povezovanju športa in tujega jezika angleščine oziroma pri uporabi pristopa CLIL. Strokovna terminologija pri športu lahko pomembno vpliva na učenčevo zaznavanje angleščine kot uporabnega jezika v njihovem vsakdanjem življenju. Če so učenci strastni glede določenega športa, jih bo uporaba angleščine v tem kontekstu bolj motivirala za učenje in uporabo jezika. Šport je globalni pojav in številni športi, kot so nogomet, košarka, tenis in drugi, uporabljajo angleščino kot glavni jezik komunikacije. Z magistrskim delom želimo učitelje spodbuditi k pogostejši uporabi pristopa CLIL ter jim olajšati načrtovanje in izvedbo takšnega pouka. V raziskovalnem delu magistrskega dela smo pripravili in izvedli učne ure, ki so vključevale vsebine angleščine in športa, ter skušali hkrati doseči cilje učnih načrtov obeh predmetov. Z akcijsko raziskavo smo pri učnih urah uporabili pristop poučevanja izbranih vsebin športa v angleščini. Takšen način poučevanja smo preizkusili v tretjem razredu z 22 učenci v osmih šolskih urah v mesecu aprilu 2024. Učenci so tako hkrati pridobili novo znanje angleščine in športa. Pričakovali smo izboljšanje znanja angleščine učencev in večjo motivacijo za nadaljnje učenje. Rezultati končnega znanja so pokazali, da gibanje pozitivno vpliva na motivacijo za učenje. Učenci so bili pri vseh šolskih urah zelo dejavni in so vidno uživali v učnih urah. Rezultati so prav tako pokazali, da gibanje pozitivno vpliva tudi na učenje in zapomnitev. Magistrsko delo je lahko v pomoč in spodbuda učiteljem, da pristop CLIL, kljub zahtevnosti, večkrat uporabijo pri svojem poučevanju tujega jezika. Zaradi pomanjkanja znanja o CLIL-pristopu, bi lahko učitelje tudi usposabljali in izobraževali za uporabo tega.The role of sports in students\u27 lives is highly significant. During school lessons, students satisfy their need for movement, while simultaneously developing their motor skills and abilities, physically growing, and relaxing. Additionally, sports play a crucial social role as students socialize, build relationships, and develop their personalities during these lessons. Therefore, sports can be effectively linked with learning a foreign language, wherein students also socialize and realize the importance of English as a communication tool in today\u27s world. In the master\u27s thesis, we addressed the holistic development of children and early foreign language learning, which led us to various approaches to early foreign language teaching, including the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach. In English language learning, the CLIL approach is increasingly utilized. This approach is based on students acquiring content knowledge (achieving the goals outlined in the curricula of various subjects, such as sports) while simultaneously using, understanding, acquiring, and learning foreign language. Such an approach offers students numerous advantages, such as increased motivation for learning and broadening their general knowledge. In our literature review, we focused on defining CLIL, its development, forms, and its use in Slovenia. Since our research is based on the connection between sports and the English language, we also focused on the interdisciplinary connection between these two subjects and their curricula. Finally, we added an English-Slovenian dictionary of sports terminology useful for the interdisciplinary integration of sports and the English language or the use of the CLIL approach. The use of sports terminology can significantly impact students\u27 perception of English as a useful language in their daily lives. If students are passionate about a particular sport, using English in this context will motivate them more to learn and use the language. Sport is a global phenomenon, and many sports, such as soccer, basketball, tennis, and others, use English as the primary language of communication. This thesis is intended to encourage teachers to use the CLIL approach more frequently and to facilitate the planning and implementation of such lessons. In the research component of the master\u27s project, we prepared and conducted lessons that incorporate both English and sports content, aiming to simultaneously achieve the goals of the curricula of both subjects. Through action research, we employed the approach of teaching selected sports content in English during these lessons. This teaching method was tested in the third grade with 22 students over 8 school hours in April 2024. Consequently, students simultaneously acquired new knowledge of both English and sports. We expected an improvement in students\u27 English proficiency and greater motivation for further learning. The results of the final test showed that physical activity has a positive effect on motivation for learning. Throughout all the lessons, the students were very active and visibly enjoyed themselves. The results also showed that physical activity positively influences learning and retention. The master\u27s thesis can be of assistance and encouragement to teachers to use the CLIL approach more frequently in their foreign language teaching, despite its challenges. Due to the lack of knowledge about the CLIL approach, teachers could also be trained and educated in its use

    Metagenome derived putative Prevotella species in gut ecosystems

    Namen magistrskega dela je bil potrditi obstoj vrst iz rodu Prevotella, ki jih je napovedala študija metagenomske analize vampnih ekosistemov (Stewart in sod., 2019), kar smo morda dosegli z izolacijo enega seva. Hkrati smo izolirali vsaj pet novih vrst rodu Prevotella. Primerjali smo genome pridobljene iz metagenomov s tistimi iz izoliranih Prevotella in ugotovili da imajo nekateri izmed prvih pomanjkanje številnih jedrnih genov za uspešno analizo MLSA, kot tudi nenavadno visoko število encimov CAZY in velikost genoma. Večina MAG se tako uvršča med genome srednje kvalitete, ki niso najprimernejši izbor za študije filogenije. Na podlagi TETRA in ANIb naj bi združeni metagenomski odčitki Stewart in sod. predstavljali 161 ločenih vrst znotraj Prevotellaceae, v vampu ovna s področja Slovenije pa smo izolirali zgolj eno potencialno vrsto. Kongruenca ribosomskih genov, ohranjena pri gojenih sevih, se ne odraža pri MAG, kjer so ti geni včasih najdeni celo v več kopijah. Mnenja smo, da je analizo surovih odčitkov Stewart in sod. (2019) nujno potrebno ponoviti z različnimi individualnimi pristopi združevanja in razvrščanja odčitkov za kontrolo kvalitete.The main purpose of Master\u27s thesis was to confirm the existence of metagenome-derived Prevotella species of rumen ecosystems from Scotland (Stewart et al., 2019), which is speculated to be fulfilled with the isolation of one such specimen. At the same time, we managed to cultivate strains of at least five new Prevotella species. Comparison of Stewart metagenomes and cultivated isolates of Prevotella revealed a distinctive deviation with metagenome-derived species showing absence of multiple core genome genes needed for MLSA analysis. Moreover, many had high numbers of CAZY enzymes and genome sizes. The majority of MAG fall into a category of medium quality drafts, which are discouraged from using in phylogenetic studies. According to TETRA and ANIb, Stewart metagenomes represent 161 species within Prevotellaceae family, however we have presumably isolated only one of them. Congruency of genes coding for ribosomal proteins, conserved in cultivated isolates of Prevotella is missing in most metagenome-derived species. In our judgement, complete analysis from raw reads obtained in Stewart et al. (2019) should be repeated, this time with multiple algorithm approach to assembly and binning of reads in order to account for quality control

    Breastfeeding and postpartum depression – case study

    Uvod: Rojstvo otroka je življenjska izkušnja, ki običajno prinese veliko veselja in zadovoljstva. Nekatere otročnice pa so po porodu lahko nerazpoložene, nemirne, jokave, žalostne ali jezne. To je lahko nekaj povsem normalnega, lahko pa se iz tega razvijejo različne duševne stiske, med katere uvrščamo tudi poporodno depresijo. Med drugim so lahko duševne stiske povezane s težavami pri vzpostavljanju laktacije in dojenja oz. vzpostavljanju hranjenja novorojenca. Otročnico je treba podpreti pri izbiri načina hranjenja novorojenca, ki najbolj ustreza njej in njeni družini. Poporodno depresijo je treba zaznati in jo ustrezno zdraviti, saj lahko spregledana vodi v resne posledice za otročnico in otroka. Namen: Namen diplomskega dela je predstaviti izkušnjo doječe otročnice, ki se je v poporodnem obdobju soočila s poporodno depresijo. Avtorica se posveti uporabi antidepresivov v času dojenja in odnosu zdravstvenih delavcev med zdravljenjem. Metode dela: V prvem delu diplomskega dela je bila uporabljena deskriptivna metoda dela s pregledom strokovne literature v slovenskem in angleškem jeziku. V drugem, empiričnem delu raziskave smo uporabili kvalitativno metodo dela – predstavitev primera otročnice, ki se je v poporodnem obdobju soočila s poporodno depresijo. Izveden je bil polstrukturiran intervju, razdeljen na štiri sklope. Udeleženka je bila izbrana na socialnem omrežju Facebook, podpisala je soglasje za sodelovanje v raziskavi. Raziskava je bila odobrena iz strani katedre za babištvo. Rezultati: V raziskavi je sodelovala doječa otročnica, ki se je v poporodnem obdobju soočila s poporodno depresijo. Udeleženka v raziskavi povezuje negativne izkušnje z dojenjem s poporodno depresijo. Poudari, da sta ustrezna pomoč in podpora v tem obdobju ključnega pomena. Tudi avtorji v literaturi ugotavljajo, da težave pri dojenju lahko negativno vplivajo na počutje otročnice, zaradi neuspešnosti pri dojenju se lahko soočajo z občutki krivde in nemoči. Razprava in zaključek: Poporodne duševne stiske so resna stanja, ki prizadenejo veliko otročnic. Pri otročnicah z znaki poporodne depresije je več verjetnosti, da bodo otroka hranile manj pogosto in krajši čas, redkeje bojo dojile izključno. Uspešno dojenje lahko prekinejo tudi zaradi zdravljenja, ker zaradi nepoznavanja področja prihaja do predsodkov o uporabi antidepresivov v času dojenja. Rezultati predstavitve primera kažejo, da udeleženka v raziskavi ni dobila ustrezne podpore s strani zdravstvenih strokovnjakov. Pomembno je pravočasno prepoznavanje simptomov in ustrezno zdravljenje. Prav tako je pomembno otročnice ustrezno informirati o varnosti uporabe antidepresivov v času dojenja. Zdravstveni strokovnjaki, ki delujejo na področju obravnave otročnic imajo ključno vlogo pri prepoznavanju poporodne depresije. Zato morajo imeti ustrezna znanja in usposobljenost za obravnavo otročnice, pomembno je, da v obravnavo vključujejo duševno zdravje. Potrebna je prilagojena podpora ženskam s poporodno depresijo pri dojenju, da bi bile zadovoljne s hranjenjem dojenčka, hkrati pa jim je treba zagotoviti tudi ustrezno podporo na področju duševnega zdravja.Introduction: The birth of a child is supposed to be a joyful event. However, many women experience postpartum moodiness, restlessness, sadness or anger. This is completely normal, but various mental health distress, including postpartum depression can evolve from them. These mental health issues are often connected to difficulties with lactation, breastfeeding and establishing a feeding routine with a new-born. A neonatal mother needs support choosing her own way of feeding the new-born that suits herself and her family the most. Postnatal depression must be detected and treated properly. If left untreated, it can leave serious consequences both for the mother and the child. Purpose: The main purpose of the present BA thesis is to present experience of a breastfeeding woman facing postnatal depression. The author focuses on the use of antidepressants while breastfeeding, and on the attitude of medical workers during her treatment. Methods: The first part of this work uses the descriptive work method with an overview of literature both in Slovene and English language. The second, empiric part of the work uses the qualitative work method, presenting a case of a woman experiencing postnatal depression. The author carried out a semi-structured interview, divided in four sets of questions. The interviewee was chosen via Facebook and she also signed a consent to cooperate in the research. The research was approved by the midwifery department. Results: The study includes a breastfeeding woman facing postnatal depression, exposing trouble with breastfeeding as one of the main reasons for the development of postnatal depression. The woman also stresses the utmost importance of adequate help and support during the period. Various literature authors have also established that breast-feeding problems often negatively impact the mother and her well-being, due to unsuccessful breast-feeding they often face feelings of guilt and powerlessness. Discussion and conclusion: Postnatal emotional destress is a serious condition, experienced by a large number of women. Women with signs of postpartum depression are more likely to feed their child incorrectly, less often and for a shorter period of time, also making exclusive breastfeeding less present. Successful breastfeeding routine may be disturbed by treatment due to the lack of knowledge and prejudice regarding the use of antidepressants while breastfeeding. The case study results have shown that the research subject was not sufficiently supported by health care experts. It is of vital importance to recognize the symptoms and treat them adequately. Medical workers are crucial at recognising depression, making their suitable capacities and the state of being informed even more important. Therefore, they need to be appropriately qualified and able to treat the new mother as well as to focus on her mental health. Women with postpartum depression should receive adapted support with breast-feeding in order to feel satisfied also while breast-feeding their babies, and at the same time they should also receive sufficient support with regard to their mental healt

    Originalism, Stare Decisis, and Constitutional Authority

    This chapter examines the relationship among three normative questions about American constitutional law: How should the Constitution be interpreted? When may (or should) the Supreme Court overrule its own constitutional precedents? And why is the Constitution binding at all? The author begins by de-constructing the “special difficulty” with stare decisis that proponents of originalist interpretation often perceive. That difficulty, the author contends, can be ex-plained only by reference to some underlying normative theory of constitutional authority―of why the Constitution binds us in the first place. The author then as-sesses four extant accounts of constitutional authority to determine whether any of them implies both originalism and a distrust of stare decisis. While three such ac-counts (Values Imposition, Consent, and Moral Guidance) may support original-ism and reject stare decisis, none of these accounts is plausible. A fourth account (Dispute Resolution) is more plausible but implies neither strong originalism nor a rejection of stare decisis. Neither originalism nor distrust of precedent, therefore, appears to be supported by a plausible account of constitutional authority

    The Stare Decisis Exception to the Chevron Deference Rule

    In this article, the author discusses how Chevron intersects with one important competing norm - stare decisis. Stare decisis counsels the Court to adhere to its own decisions, particularly statutory ones, absent substantial justification for departure. To what extent should stare decisis apply when an agency\u27s interpretation of a statute, otherwise deserving of deference under Chevron, conflicts with a prior interpretation of the statute by the Supreme Court? This article suggests the following answer: If the Court\u27s prior opinion upheld the agency\u27s interpretation as one reasonable reading of the statute, but not the only one possible, and the agency thereafter adopts a different interpretation, the new reading is entitled to deference under Chevron, free from the constraints of stare decisis. Deference to the agency poses no true conflict with stare decisis because the prior opinion has not purported to definitively construe the statute

    The Supreme Court in Bondage: Constitutional Stare Decisis, Legal Formalism, and the Future of Unenumerated Rights

    This essay advances a formalist conception of constitutional stare decisis. The author argues that instrumentalist accounts of precedent are inherently unsatisfying and that the Supreme Court should abandon adherence to the doctrine that it is free to overrule its own prior decisions. These moves are embedded in a larger theoretical framework--a revival of formalist ideas in legal theory that he calls neoformalism to distinguish his view from the so-called formalism caricatured by the legal realists (and from some other views that are called formalist ). In Part II, The Critique of Unenumerated Constitutional Rights, the author sets the stage by briefly recalling why the unenumerated rights precedents are under theoretical (and political) siege. Then, in Part III, Neoformalism, Stare Decisis, and the Rule of Law, he examines the jurisprudential roots of a formalist revival that would create theoretical space for the idea that the Supreme Court should regard itself as bound by precedent. In Part IV, A Neoformalist Conception of Constitutional Stare Decisis, that theoretical framework is deployed to develop the outline of a neoformalist theory of constitutional stare decisis. This conception is brought down to earth in Part V, which answers the question posed by its title: Does the Neoformalist Conception of Constitutional Stare Decisis Support Contemporary Unenumerated Rights Jurisprudence? The author wraps it up in Part VI, Unenumerated Rights and the Future of Constitutional Doctrine
