Douglas College student research essay submitted as partial requirement for GSWS 2101: Gender Today (Fall 2021) course. Faculty sponsor to submit this essay to DOOR: Dr. Jill Fellows. The use of virtual assistants is increasing every day, as a technological tool that is marketed as a necessity to assist in making our modern lives more efficient. These tools are designed to help us with daily tasks such as searching for information, reading emails, writing messages, making calls and scheduling meetings with others. The most popular examples “Siri” or “Alexa” have been created with specific gendered characteristics and behavior as the author points out “virtual assistants are very obviously gendered. Siri and Alexa both have female names”, (Fellows, forthcoming 2022) designed with a personality of submissive and serviceable, as the author mentions “they portray a gender binary dominant-submissive relationship, positioning the user in the dominant position, and they play out subordination as feminine.” (Fellows, forthcoming 2022)Not peer reviewe

Palabras clave: Mayra Santos-Febres, objeto voz, feminismo, subjetividad, racismo, Carlos Gardel   ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the female narration of La amante de Gardel (2015) by Puerto Rican author Mayra Santos-Febres in light of Mladen Dolar’s theorization of the object voice and the definitions of the subject proposed by Patricia Collins and bell hooks. The essay situates the novel in relation to Santos-Febres’ earlier works in order to show how La amante de Gardel shares some of the same concerns while distinguishing itself through its first-person narration by an Afrodescendant protagonist, Micaela Thorné. The article shows how the ambiguous qualities of Carlos Gardel’s object voice inspire the protagonist’s narration. By narrating her story, Micaela appropriates Gardel’s voice and affirms herself as a subject at the same time that she recognizes and questions the sexist and racist discourses that attempt to limit her, in particular the mind/body dichotomy.   Key words: Mayra Santos-Febres, object voice, feminism, subjectivity, racism, Carlos Gardel

The dissertation entitled La herida, que es recordar: história and memória in Mayra Santos-Febres's novel Fe en disfraz, proposes a reading of the novel referenced in the Puerto Rican author Mayra Santos-Febres, focusing on the author's interpretative proposals for categories such as memory and history, and the way in which fictionally articulates the story-stories that are engaged in the text. Memory and history are currently much explored, however, in the research developed, the subject will be approached considering the contexts of Brazil and Puerto Rico referenced in the corpus of the research. Contemporaneously, there have been numerous re-readings of versions presented by traditional historiography regarding the memory of colonization and enslavement, it is precisely this movement that is observed in the novel studied here, so this research aims to make visible the intellectual and artistic production of authorship Feminine and black that, in the context of Latin America, proposes to critically re-read ancestral memories, as is the case of Santos-Febres. In order to do so, we have dialogues with theoretical references from Cultural Studies, Literature Theory, Feminist Studies, among which are authors Stuart Hall (2003), Tomás Tadeu (2014); (1998), Lélia González (1998), Euridice Figueiredo (2010), Pollack (1986) ), Ricouer (2007), Nora (1996), Benjamin (2012), among others. In dialogue with this referential, memory is here worked as production, that is, in the novel Fe en disfraz, the memory is not individual, but collective, as it is not spontaneous, but produced, due to issues such as memory duty And the politics of memory. Thus, Mayra Santos-Febres can be inserted within a group of insurgent intellectuals, for committing to make a counter-reading of the women's stories-memories of which the literary narrative here studied deals with.
