When Everything Changes: Using Critical Family History to Deconstruct Keesing and Fitzpatrick Surnames
DNA analysis has enabled a much deeper interrogation of our surnames, Keesing and Fitzpatrick, than was possible via traditional genealogical research. This can inform us regarding the potential ‘hidden’ complexities of some surnames. Through juxtaposing the narratives of our family histories and DNA findings we demonstrate, using collaborative autoethnography, how surnames can be haunted by ghosts both real and imagined. The DNA-enabled critical exploration of the history of our surnames, in the context of the social and political factors that shaped them, generates a deeper and more complex understanding of how our surnames were taken/given. In this paper we investigate and deconstruct our Irish and Jewish ancestry. Fitzpatrick and Keesing are anglicised/normanised/colonised surnames that exemplify attempts to dis/member our identities. Here we re/member them, but with that comes a realisation that ‘everything has changed’ and with that come new dis/memberings and re/memberings
The tukutuku panel is never bare
This chapter uses poetry as a method to illuminate the tensions and wonderment of committing to a bicultural relationship that speaks ultimately to bicultural performances in education. Esther hoped for a poetic conversation between two women, haunted differently through colonization – embodied hurt and lingering crisis – and yearnings for restoration and redemption
Decolonising an Irish Surname by Working the Hyphen of Gene-Ealogy
The surname Fitzpatrick is readily identified as Irish. Until recently, the traditional Fitzpatrick surname narrative was of a medieval super-progenitor named Giolla Phádraig. His offspring, the eponymous Mac Giolla Phádraig, it was said, somehow came to dwell in every Irish province; yet this is an Irish surname myth that works to erase the history of ancient ‘Fitzpatrick’ clans. This article demonstrates how deconstructing the surname Fitzpatrick, through working the hyphen of gene-eaology, is a practice of decolonisation. Via genetic data and archival records, dominant clan identities are disrupted, while connections with lost clans are re/membered. Critical analysis dismantles the dominant narrative imposed by colonial strategies and reconnects people with kinship groups and forgotten forebears. Questions arise from the deconstruction of an Irish surname. How might new clan identities be imagined, and how is losing a dominant surname narrative negotiated
Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University
This is the recording of the keynote presentation by Kathleen Fitzpatrick, author of “Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University.” The presentation was held on Wednesday, January 27th, 2021 via the Zoom cloud video conferencing system. It was sponsored by the University of Kansas Libraries and The Commons and held in conjunction with the inaugural KU Summit on Community-Engaged Learning and Scholarship, hosted by the Center for Service Learning.
Fitzpatrick is the director of Digital Humanities and a professor of English at Michigan State University. She is also the author of “Generous Thinking: The University and the Public Good” and "Planned Obsolescence: Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy."Kathleen Fitzpatrick, author of “Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University,” discusses her research into thinking and leading generously. Fitzpatrick urges KU faculty and staff to think critically, constructively, and generously in order to engage effectively with each other and beyond the university.University of Kansas LibrariesThe Common
The game of zombies and survivors on cartesian products of graphs
We consider the game of Zombies and Survivors as introduced by Fitzpatrick, Howell, Messinger and Pike (2016) This is a variation of the game Cops and Robber where the zombies (in the cops’ role) are of limited intelligence and will always choose to move closer to a survivor (who takes on the robber’s role). The zombie number of a graph is defined to be the minimum number of zombies required to guarantee the capture of a survivor on the graph. In this paper, we show that the zombie number of the Cartesian product of n non-trivial trees is exactly ⌈2n/3⌉. This settles a conjecture by Fitzpatrick et. al. (2016) that this is the zombie number for the n-dimensional hypercube. In proving this result, we also discuss other variations of Cops and Robber involving active and flexible players
Joan Fitzpatrick: In Memoriam
Joan Fitzpatrick graduated from Harvard Law School in 1975. Women were then beginning to enter the legal profession in increasing numbers, but role models were still important in encouraging women to become equal partners in our profession. Joan was an especially effective role model for our students. I think she realized that. It was one of the things that drove her to excel in everything she did. Joan told me—more than once in fact—that she earned every penny she made. It was a point of pride to her. She was a hard worker whose work yielded very important results. And she was the kind of teacher who would make students think: If Professor Fitzpatrick can do that, then I can also do great and important things. Joan joined our faculty in 1984. In her eighteen years with us, she became an internationally known and respected authority on human rights. She was a primary author or editor of six books, the author or co-author of fourteen book chapters, and the author or co-author of about forty scholarly articles. Joan spoke on issues of international human rights throughout North America and Europe. In the words of one of her admirers, she was brilliant, eloquent, and internationally renowned

Narrative and Metaphor: The Beginning Matter
Both narrative and metaphor provide mechanisms for making sense of the world. While metaphors elaborate and articulate particular points in a narrative, narrative provides meaningful connections between sometimes unrelated metaphors, suggesting a symbiotic relationship between the two. The innovative research methodologies and practices that feature in this volume reflect some contemporary post- and trans-movements and reflexive turns of the past 20 years, including post-structuralism, post-humanism, and new materialism. As a collection, this volume emphasizes diversity and difference, rather than looking for a unifying theory or method of narrative and metaphor. As the breadth of work represented here suggests, there are many approaches to narrative and metaphor research. This volume attests to the significance of stories and metaphor in everyday lives and in research
Evaluasi Program Menggunakan Model Participant-Oriented Approach (Fitzpatrick, Sanders, Worthen)
This literature study design presents scientific ideas regarding the Participant-oriented approach (Fitzpatrick, Sanders, Worden) evaluation model using different case study assignments. The participant oriented approach (Fitzpatrick, Sanders, Worthy is the focus of the author in making scientific articles using a literature study design through research journals that are related to the topic of the article. The author uses three different case studies as comparisons and as information for readers regarding the participant oriented approach by fitzpatrick, sanders, worthen. the three cases include the training program evaluation model, the bloom's mastery learning model outside formal education hours, on weekdays, and on weekends, and the field-based training model program for mental health workers , community workers, psychosocial workers and counselors
