Automated model structure variation and policy robustness testing: A procedure for innovation diffusion models

    No full text
n this paper we present a procedure that enables a systematic and partially automated parameterization and selection of agent-based models of the diffusion of innovations and policies to support diffusion processes. A prototype on the diffusion of water saving shower heads is presented. Our results suggest that the presented approach can adequately and systematically evaluate different sets of parameters and model structures against known diffusion data.Energie and Industri

XPO1 mutations identify a subgroup of early stage CLL patients characterized by shorter time to first treatment conceivably due to enhanced B cell receptor signaling

Most early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients do not require immediate treatment and are actively managed with watch & wait strategy. While few clinical and molecular factors predict treatment requirement, the impact of gene mutations in unknown. In this study, we examined a total of 1092 early- stage CLL cases, subdivided into a training group (N=295) and two validation cohorts (N=402 and N=395). Through NGS analysis, we identified XPO1 mutations as predictor of shorter time to first treatment (TTFT). Importantly, XP01 mutations retained their prognostic significance independently of IGHV status and variables incorporated into the prognostic models that predict TTFT in early-stage CLL (IPS-E and Rai O Model). To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the higher proliferation rate of XPO1 mutated cells, we conducted RNA and ATAC-seq on 8 XPO1-mutated CLL samples and 15 XP01 wild-type CLL cases, matched for IGHV status, FISH karyotype, and TP53 status. The analysis revealed that chromatin regions with increased accessibility in XP01-mutated CLL were enriched with binding sites for transcription factors regulated by BCR-related pathways, including NF-kB signaling, p38-JNK, and RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK. Pathway enrichment analysis of upregulated genes from RNA-seq data indicated that XP01 mutant CLL exhibited transcriptomic features associated with BCR and cytokine signaling. Combining epigenomic and transcriptomic data, we found that MIR155HG (the host gene of miR-155) and MYB (the transcription factor regulating MIR155HG) were upregulated, and their promoters were more accessible in XPO1-mutated CLL. Further confirmation through RT-qPCR demonstrated higher expression of miR-155 in XP01-mutated cells. In conclusion, XP01 mutations, conceivably by increasing miR-155 levels, enhance BCR signaling, resulting in a higher proliferation rate and a shorter TTFT in early-stage CLL. The integration of XPO1 mutations into existing scoring systems may aid in identifying patients who would derive the greatest benefit from early intervention clinical trials

A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams

    No full text
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Topic alignment between two texts is found to increase author verification precision, and an authors writing style is found to change over time, but not more significantly after 3 years than after 1 year.Information ArchitectureWISElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Modelling proximity effects on industrial district competitiveness

    No full text
This paper investigates how proximity affects the Industrial Districts (ID) competitiveness by taking into account four dimensions of proximity, namely geographical, organizational, cognitive and social. The aim is to identify the optimal combinations of proximity that fosters ID competitiveness. The complexity science is adopted as both theoretical and methodological approach. Complexity theory is used to identify whether the proximity matter for the ID competitiveness by analyzing the influence of the proximity on the ID adaptive capacity. Our argument is that the more adaptive the ID, the more the competitive success. Based on the complexity theory, we identify the structural features that allow ID adaptation and their best values. Then, by developing a computational model based on the Business Dynamics, we carry out a simulation analysis to evaluate the influence of the proximity on the values of the ID structural variables. We look for the best combinations of proximity providing results coherent with the optimal theoretical values suggested by the complexity theory

Exploring the Out‐Group Homogeneity Effect Among Arab Children in Israel: The Roles of Religion, Contact, and Group Identification

    No full text
ABSTRACT The out‐group homogeneity effect has been found to contribute to adults' inter‐group biases. Three studies examined whether 5‐ and 8‐year‐old Arab (i.e., minority) children in Israel also manifest this effect (March 2017–January 2020). Arab children from different religious affiliations and social environments ( N  = 272, 54% females) were asked to choose either a homogeneous or a heterogeneous sample of group members to infer if a given property (biological or psychological) was true of a whole group: either the participant's in‐group (Arabs) or out‐group (Jews). Overall, differently from Jewish (i.e., majority) Israeli children, Arab children did not exhibit the out‐group homogeneity effect. Nevertheless, there were indications that religious affiliation, social environment, and group identification affected children's responses

The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    No full text
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
