Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textIn the present doctoral thesis, the concept of Quality of Life has been studied; in particular, health-related Quality of Life of women with breast cancer undergoing operative treatment. Quality of Life is an abstract term with multiple dimensions. In Health Care, when considering “Quality of Life” and how this is affected in a person facing a certain disease, the following issues should be taken into account: physical state, mental health, social and spiritual well-being. Breast cancer has various effects on a patients’ Quality of Life at different disease stages, and very often changes may be seen through different time periods in a certain dimension of Quality of Life. In the present thesis, theoretical concepts of Health Care and Quality of Life and relevant basic issues and terms are presented first. The term used for the combination of the two basic concepts is Health-related Quality of Life. A brief presentation of basic concepts on breast anatomy and physiology, as well as breast cancer and its causes follows. The third part of this thesis presents data on Quality of Life of women with breast cancer undergoing operative treatment, including the following parameters of Quality of Life: physical state, body functions, mental and psychological status, sexuality, daily activities and social well-being. In the next part of this thesis, results from the questionnaire-based study conducted at Theagenio Cancer Hospital during 2010-2012, about Qality of Life in women with breast cancer are presented; various dimensions possibly affecting overall Quality of Life have been evaluated, including family and social well-being, physical and emotional well-being, any co-morbidities, personal activities, concern and anxiety of these patients and relationship with the doctor. In addition, an attempt was made to evaluate the level of physical distress of these patients by measuring cortisol levels prior to and after surgery. Finally, these results have been discussed in conjuction with those from relevant studies from the literature. In conclusion, in the long term, patients’ QL deteriorates in respect to functional and emotional well-being, “additional concerns” and patient-doctor relationship. Hence, specific interventions should aim to improve these aspects of QL in breast cancer patients undergoing breast conserving surgery.Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή γίνεται μία προσπάθεια προσέγγισης της έννοιας της ποιότητας ζωής και συγκεκριμένα της σχετιζόμενης με την υγεία ποιότητας ζωής στην περίπτωση των γυναικών με καρκίνο του μαστού, που έχουν υποβληθεί σε χειρουργική επέμβαση. Η ποιότητα ζωής αποτελεί μία έννοια αφηρημένη, η που επηρεάζεται από πολλές παραμέτρους. Κυρίως στον τομέα της υγείας όταν γίνεται λόγος για την ποιότητα ζωής και πως αυτή επηρεάζεται στην περίπτωση ενός ατόμου που αντιμετωπίζει μία ασθένεια, τότε τα βασικά θέματα που εξετάζονται είναι η φυσική/σωματική κατάσταση, η ψυχική υγεία, η κοινωνική ευημερία και η πνευματική ευεξία. Ο καρκίνος του μαστού από την άλλη μεριά, είναι μία νόσος κατά την οποία σε όλα τα στάδιά της παρατηρούνται επιδράσεις στην ποιότητα ζωής των ασθενών, ενώ παράλληλά εντοπίζονται και διαφορές στην ίδια διάσταση της ποιότητας ζωής μεταξύ διαφορετικών χρονικών περιόδων. Προκειμένου να εξυπηρετηθεί ο σκοπός της παρούσης διατριβής, αρχικά γίνεται μία θεωρητική προσέγγιση της έννοιας της υγείας και της ποιότητας ζωής και των βασικότερων εννοιών και όρων που τις αφορούν, καθώς και της μεταξύ τους σχέσης. Ο όρος που χρησιμοποιείται για το συνδυασμό των δύο εννοιών είναι η Σχετιζόμενη με την Υγεία Ποιότητα Ζωής. Στη συνέχεια γίνεται μία αναφορά στο μαστό, εστιάζοντας στην ανατομία και τη φυσιολογία, αλλά και την ανάπτυξη του καρκίνου με μία σύντομη αναφορά στους παράγοντες που μπορεί να προκαλέσουν τη νόσο. Το τρίτο κεφάλαιο επικεντρώνεται στην ποιότητα ζωής των γυναικών με καρκίνο του μαστού που έχουν υποβληθεί σε χειρουργείο. Οι επιπτώσεις στην περίπτωση αυτών των γυναικών παρατηρούνται στη φυσική κατάσταση, στις σωματικές λειτουργίες, στην ψυχική και ψυχολογική κατάσταση, στη σεξουαλικότητα, στις καθημερινές δραστηριότητες, στην κοινωνική ευημερία και είναι αυτές που αποτελούν το βασικό αντικείμενο μελέτης της εν λόγω ενότητας. Στη συνέχεια παρατίθεται το ειδικό μέρος της διδακτορικής διατριβής, στο οποίο παρουσιάζονται τα στοιχεία της μελέτης που διεξήχθη στο Α.Ν.Θ. Θεαγένειο κατά την περίοδο 2010-2012 και αφορά στην ποιότητα ζωής σε γυναίκες με καρκίνο του μαστού, με σκοπό να εξαχθούν συμπεράσματα σχετικά με την επίδραση της νόσου στην ποιότητα ζωής των ασθενών. Για να γίνει αυτό, αξιολογούνται διάφορες παράμετροι που επηρεάζουν την ποιότητα ζωής, όπως η οικογένεια, η κοινωνική ευημερία, η φυσική και συναισθηματική ευημερία, η παρουσία συνοδών νοσημάτων, οι προσωπικές δραστηριότητες, οι ανησυχίες των γυναικών αυτών και η σχέση με τον γιατρό. Γίνεται μια προσπάθεια να εκτιμηθεί επίσης το στρες των γυναικών αυτών με την μέτρηση της κορτιζόλης πριν και μετά το χειρουργείο. Τέλος, επιχειρείται σύγκριση των αποτελεσμάτων της έρευνας με αντίστοιχες μελέτες, που υπάρχουν διαθέσιμες στη σχετική βιβλιογραφία. Εν κατακλείδι, μακροπρόθεσμα, η ποιότητα ζωής των ασθενών επιδεινώνεται οσον αφορά την λειτουργική και συναισθηματική ευημερία, τις πρόσθετες ανησυχίες και την σχέση ασθενή - γιατρού. Ως εκ τούτου, συγκεκριμένες παρεμβάσεις πρέπει να στοχεύουν στη βελτίωση αυτών των πτυχών της ποιότητας ζωής σε ασθενείς με καρκίνο του μαστού που υποβάλλονται σε χειρουργική επέμβαση διατήρησης του μαστού
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
