Contextualising upper echelon research: The interactions of top management teams and CEOs

    No full text
Top managers are considered the most influential decision-makers for firms’ strategy and a large body of research presents evidence for executive effects in different settings. Yet only recently have researchers started to pay attention to the role of the social and environmental contexts in which top management teams (TMTs) are embedded. Top executives are often informed, influenced, and sometimes constrained by others inside and outside the organization. As a result, upper echelons face diverse challenges and opportunities when operating in a variety of different contexts. Contextual factors at the team, organizational, industry and country level are considered not only important determinants of executive composition but also moderating forces shaping the consequences of executive characteristics for firm strategy and performance. This special issue focuses on one particular layer of context, the team context, and aims to advance our theoretical and empirical understanding of the interplay between the top management teams and the CEO

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Estudio del incensario-escriba de Mayapán

[EN] This research focuses on a pre-hispanic polychrome ceramic censer representing a monkey-scribe found in the archaeological site of Mayapán, produced between 1250 and 1400 under the leadership of the Cocom, a group originating from the Tabasco region. Scribes in Mayan society were part of the royal family’s circle and they cover various function: from scribe and interpret to ceremony’s master; they created lineages and were considered as people with supernatural skill; the monkey-man god was one of their most important patron. Iconographical and iconological examination reveals a strict relation with the Maya tradition, in particular to the classical period and stylistic influences from the centre of México, specifically to the Mixtec-Puebla tradition. The materials’ analysis has revealed the use of some substances common in the Maya Low Land (as lime mortar mixed with organic substances, clay pigments and carbon black) along with precious pigments that needed to be imported from other areas (like hematite), moreover the use of jarosita as yellow pigment was also detected, which is especially rare not only in the Maya region but in all Mesoamerica; until now this mineral was found solely as part of a burial offering in the urban centre of Teotihuacan; this detail opens a new question mark. In conclusion, the censer’s conservation is strictly linked with a programme of preventive conservation and a strategy of monitoring in line with loans. The increasing concentration of pollution in the atmosphere as in closed environments makes it necessary to control this factor that can seriously affect the censer’s materials. Grifi, F.; Vázquez De Agredos Pascual, ML. Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The Antimicrobial Peptide 1018-K6 Interacts Distinctly with Eukaryotic and Bacterial Membranes, the Basis of Its Specificity and Bactericidal Activity

    No full text
Since penicillin was discovered, antibiotics have been critical in the fight against infections. However, antibiotic misuse has led to drug resistance, which now constitutes a serious health problem. In this context, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) constitute a natural group of short proteins, varying in structure and length, that act against certain types of bacterial pathogens. The antimicrobial peptide 1018-K6 (VRLIVKVRIWRR- NH2) has significant bactericidal and antibiofilm activity against Listeria monocytogenes isolates, and against different strains and serotypes of Salmonella. Here, the mechanism of action of 1018-K6 was explored further to understand the peptide–membrane interactions relevant to its activity, and to define their determinants. We combined studies with model synthetic membranes (liposomes) and model biological membranes, assessing the absorption maximum and the quenching of 1018-K6 fluorescence in aqueous and lipid environments, the self-quenching of carboxyfluorescein, as well as performing lipid sedimentation assays. The data obtained reflect the differential interactions of the 1018-K6 peptide with eukaryotic and prokaryotic membranes, and the specific interactions and mechanisms of action in the three prokaryotic species studied: Salmonella Typhimurium2GN, Escherichia coli3GN, and Staphylococcus aureus3GP. The AMP 1018-K6 is a candidate to prevent (food preservation) or treat (antibiotic use) infections caused by certain pathogenic bacteria, especially some that are resistant to current antibiotics
