Foreign invasive pests Drosophila suzukii (Matsamura) and Zaprionus indianus Gupta (Diptera: Drosophilidae) threaten fruit production in northwestern Argentina
The sub-tropical region of northwestern Argentina (Tucuman province) shelters a major soft fruit production and exporting industry. Drosophila suzukii (spotted-wing Drosophila; SWD) is a major global pest of soft fruits because females can lay eggs under the epidermis of healthy, ripening fruit. Recently, Argentina was invaded by the SWD, which has quickly spread to all cardinal points, showing a great ability of adaptation to different climates and fruit crops. We report for the first t ime the presence of two invasive drosophilid species, SWD and Zaprionus indianus (African fig fly), in the sub-tropical rainforest of the Yungas (KöppenGeiger climate classification CWa), adjacent to a high-value fruit production region, in the province of Tucumán (northwestern Argentina). Both species were recovered from wild guava fruit (Psidium guajava). The SWD was found in healthy, ripe fruit attached to the trees (65%) and in damaged fruit collected from the ground (35%), while Z. indianus was only recovered from damaged fruit collected from the ground (100%). Zaprionus indianus, SWD, and other drosophilids accounted for 86.6%, 7.1%, and 6.3%, respectively, of the total of drosophilids found. The presence of both invasive insects in the region, especially SWD, is a threat for the local berry industry. Since SWD can complete its life cycle in guavas, these fruits would allow the sustainability of SWD populations during the seasons in which commercial berry crops are not in production.Berry growers and plant protection agencies should promptly take measures to limit these pests? dispersion to commercial fruit fields.Fil: Escobar, Lorena Ines. Superparasitismo en anastrepha fraterculus (diptera: tephritidae) por diachasmimorpha longicaudata (hymenoptera: braconidae)
Bajo el concepto de que Diachasmimorpha longicaudata es un parasitoide con alto potencial biológico para ser empleado como agente de biocontrol contra «moscas de la fruta» de importancia económica en Argentina, se evaluó en una colonia del parasitoide criada sobre larvas de A. fraterculus bajo condiciones de laboratorio, las posibles consecuencias del súper-parasitismo sobre el tiempo de desarrollo de los estados inmaduros del parasitoide, la productividad, eficiencia y longevidad de los adultos, como así también la proporción sexual de la progenie y el tamaño corporal de la descendencia.Fil: Escobar, Lorena Ines. First record of Feltiella curtistylus Gagné (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Argentina = Primer registro de Feltiella curtistylus Gagné (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) en Argentina
The first records of Feltiella curtistylus Gagné (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Argentina are reported. Larvae from this species were captured in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) leaflets heavily infested with Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranichidae) in Famaillá, province of Tucumán, Argentina (27°03’S, 65°25’W). In 2015 (June, September and October), 16 larvae were collected; in 2016 (October, November and December), 23 larvae; and in 2017 (September, October and November), 49 larvae. Since F. curtistylus was found associated to a mite of agricultural importance in strawberry crops, this predatory gall midge has a potential for being considered a biological control agent.Se presenta los primeros registros de Feltiella curtistylus Gagné (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) en Argentina. Las larvas de esta especie fueron capturadas en folíolos de frutilla (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) fuertemente infestados con Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranichidae) en Famaillá, provincia de Tucumán, Argentina (27°03'S, 65°25'O). En 2015 (junio, septiembre y octubre) se recolectaron 16 larvas; en 2016 (octubre, noviembre y diciembre), 23 larvas; y en 2017 (septiembre, octubre y noviembre), 49 larvas. Occurrence of Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae) on raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and blackberry (Rubus fructicosus) fruit cultivated in a semiarid-temperate highland valley of Tucumán, Argentina
The Mediterranean fruit fly (CC), Ceratitis capitata, and the South American fruit fly (AF), Anastrepha fraterculus, are serious polyphagous insects considered pests of several plant families. Both species are widely distributed in Argentina, including the province of Tucumán, where their occurrence was reported in high-elevation valleys, affecting several cultivated and wild fruit species. Provided that raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and blackberry (Rubus fructicosus) are minor (but in expansion) crops in Tucumán, and the spectrum of pests affecting these crops is not very well known, the aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of AF and CF on these crops. During 2016, ripe fruit from plants of the blackberry cultivar ?878? and the raspberry cultivar ?Heritage? were collected from an organic orchard in Tafí del Valle (26°52′S, 65°41′W, 2014 m altitude). Sampling dates were Feb-5, 19 and 24, and Mar-10 and 23. Fruit sample was divided into 2 replicates of 20-30 fruits each, and placed into clamshells (20×20×30 cm) with sand at the bottom for larvae pupation. Clamshell lids were removed and replaced by voile fabric to allow air exchange and to prevent insects from escaping. They were kept at about 25°C and 60-70% RH for 20 days. Tephritid adults and pupae from each clamshell were recovered weekly, identified and counted. The reported fruit infestation level was based on the number of adults per fruit number and fruit weight obtained from each sample. Means and standard deviations (SD) were calculated. This is the first report of the occurrence of the South American fruit fly on blackberry and raspberry in Tucumán (Argentina).Fil: Meneguzzi, Natalia G.. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Parasitoids associated with the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in Argentina and their potential role as biological control agents of this pest in blueberry orchards
Trabajo presentado al XII International Vaccinium SymposiumArgentina's organic blueberry exports are approximately 2,200 t, which is mainly shipped to North America, Europe, and South-East Asia, mostly from September to November (spring). Organic fresh blueberries range third in volume of organic fruits exported, behind pears and apples. The spotted wing Drosophila (SWD) is an exotic pest that increasingly threatens Argentina's blueberry industry since its irruption in 2014. In northern Argentina, where most of the blueberry acreage is established, the rainy season begins between the end of October and the first weeks of November, bringing on ideal conditions (mild temperatures and adequate soil and air moisture) for SWD reproduction and fruit infestation. For the control of SWD, insecticides are not effective and cultural control is complex. Besides, little is known about local beneficial organisms that could regulate SWD populations. Frugivorous drosophilids are mainly attacked by larvae and pupae parasitoids. The former are endoparasitoids that interact with the host's immune system and tend to have a narrow host range; on the contrary, pupae parasitoids are ecto- or endoparasitoids and tend to be generalists, attacking a wide range of hosts. SWD invasion encouraged studies aimed to explore the presence of local parasitoids that would contribute to an environmentally sound management of the pest. As a result of this study, several hymenopteran parasitoid species have been identified in blueberry and other berry crops: Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae (pupae parasitoid; Pteromalidae), Trichopria sp. (pupae parasitoid; Diapriidae), Dieucoila octoflagella, Ganaspis hookeri, Ganaspis sp., Hexacola sp., Leptopilina boulardi, and Leptopilina clavipes (larvae parasitoids; Figitidae). They were captured in traps installed in berry orchards infested with SWD, or among fallen fruit, and/or emerged from fruit infested with SWD. Dieucoila octoflagella is a new species, recently recorded in Argentina by our group, whose adult was recovered from SWD pupae. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
