Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The Medellín Cartel and Pablo Escobar in the Maranhão Press (1984 – 1993)
This monograph analyzes how the Maranhão press (newspapers O Estado do
Maranhão and O Imparcial) approached the formation, performance and dismantling of the
Medellin Cartel in Colombia and the trajectory of its main leader, Pablo Escobar from 1984 to
1993. We assume that The approach in the Brazilian press about the Colombian government's
struggle against the Medellin Cartel and Pablo Escobar contributed to the legitimation of
representations and a social imaginary about Colombia as a place in Latin America dominated
by drug trafficking. For the development of this hypothesis, we try to understand how the
newspapers of great circulation contribute to the consolidation of social imaginary about Latin
America and, particularly, about Colombia in Brazil.
“For thy kingdom is past not away, / Nor thy power from the place thereof hurled”: Martianus Capella and a Prophylactic Oracle of Apollo
The chapter provides a reconsideration of a section in Martianus Capella’s Book 1, dedicated to the ‘failure of the oracles’ and culminating in a quotation of a prophylactic Apollinean oracle, attributed to Alexander of Abonouteichos. The author tries to reconstruct some possible lines of transmission of this oracle, at the same time highlighting how its allegorical framework helps to shed light on some aspects of the ongoing controversy between pagans and Christians, which took into account the thaumaturgical and therapeutic capabilities of the gods
