Radar data processing, quality analysis and level-1b product generation for AGRISAR and EAGLE campaigns
For the assessment of specific programmatic needs of the Sentinel program and for the understanding and quantification of bio-geophysical parameters of different vegetated surfaces ESA has initiated and partially funded two airborne campaigns in 2006. In both campaigns the airborne SAR system of DLR, E-SAR was employed to acquire multi-frequency and multi-polarisation data over the different test sites.
For the AGRISAR campaign 16 E-SAR flights have been conducted over Görmin test-site in the period from April-August 2006 to acquire representative data sets which cover the complete agricultural vegetation period of different crops. For the EAGLE project two test-sites have been flown, Cabauw for specific investigations on agricultural areas and Speulderbos for forest parameter assessment.
The present paper describes the adopted methodology for processing the acquired E-SAR data. First the standard processing approach which leads to RGI (radar geometry images) and GTC (geocoded terrain corrected) products is described. Then we focus on the special aspects which were considered for the processing of the temporal time series for the AGRISAR project.
Further discussion is included with respect to the mosaicked DEM, which was generated for the AGRISAR test site from E-SAR single-pass SAR interferometry, as well as the generation of synthetic QUAD-POL products in C-band (performed for both AGRISAR and EAGLE campaigns).
Another section is devoted to the generation of Sentinel-1 like data quality products from high resolution C-band data, as is requested by the specific programmatic needs of ESA.

SAR polarimetry for oil at sea observation
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) oil slick observation is a topic of great applicative relevance which has been physically recast by a set of new polarimetric approaches that, exploiting the departure from Bragg scattering, al- low observing oil at sea in a very robust and effective way. In this study, these polarimetric approaches are reviewed and their performances are discussed with re- spect to some thought experiments undertaken on quad- pol full-resolution L- and C-band SAR data
GOCE observations for detecting unknown tectonic features
The global coverage of a satellite allows us to investigate areas that are difficult to access due to remoteness or ruggedness. We intend to use the GOCE gradiometric observations to detect unknown tectonic features. At the present stage of the GOCE mission we take the error levels of the observations to estimate the resolution of known density discontinuities of the Earth crust: the crust-mantle and sediment-basement transition. The spherical harmonic expansion of mass distributions is compared with the estimated degree error curves of the gravity field. We find that the GOCE data will contribute to a better resolution of these discontinuities by one order of magnitude for degree between 52 and 200 compared to the EGM2008 gravity field model. The geodynamic context affects the resolution as it controls the average Moho depth, shallower levels being better resolved. For the basement the dominant resolution parameter is the density contrast across the interface

ESA-ESO Working Group report \#4: ESA-ESO Working Group on Galactic Populations, Chemistry and Dynamics
Between the early 40s, when Baade showed the first evidence for the existence of two distinct stellar populations, and today, with our Galaxy surprising us with new substructures discovered almost on a monthly basis, it is clear that a remarkable progress has been achieved in our understanding of the Galaxy, of its structure and stellar populations, and of its chemical and dynamical signatures. Yet, some questions have remained open and have proven to be very challenging.The main task of this Working Group has been to review the state-of- the-art knowledge of the Milky Way galaxy, to identify the future challenges, and to propose which tools (in terms of facilities, infrastructures, instruments, science policies) would be needed to successfully tackle and solve the remaining open questions. Considering the leadership position that Europe has reached in the field of Galactic astronomy (thanks to the Hipparcos mission and the Very Large Telescope) and looking at the (near-) future major initiatives it has undertaken (VISTA and VST survey telescopes, Gaia mission), this work clearly has been very timely.It is of uttermost importance for European astronomy to keep and further consolidate its leading position. This Working Group has made recommendations that would allow dissecting our backyard laboratory, the Galaxy, even further. ESO survey telescopes about to become operational and the upcoming ESA Gaia mission are a guarantee for opening new horizons and making new discoveries. We, the astronomers, with the support of our funding agencies, are ready to fully commit to the best exploitation of the treasure that is ahead of us. The main recommendations this Working Group has made to ESA and ESO are to guarantee the expected tremendous capabilities of these new facilities, to vigourously organise their synergies and to jointly give ways to European astronomers to be leaders in the exploitation of their output data
