Traitors, terrorists, & çapulcus: Protests and the limits of democratic politics in Turkey’s first century and beyond
No full textDespite their crucial role in the country’s political history, protests have not been normalised as a form of participation in Turkey. Neither state authorities nor much of the public consider or treat protests as legitimate and acceptable means of political expression or claims-making. This chapter examines the factors and historical circumstances contributing to this non-normalisation by presenting a brief (and thus unavoidably incomplete) account of the long and complex history of protests in Turkey. It treats this non-normalisation as a facet of one of the republic’s unresolved problems: its failure to constitute a form of democratic, civic citizenship. The chapter argues that protests are not seen as legitimate means of participation in contemporary Turkey due not only to their conflictual and violent history in the twentieth century but also to the boundaries of desirable behaviour for citizens—that is, to how an acceptable citizen is imagined. Within this history, this chapter highlights the Gezi protests of 2013 as a critical moment that revealed the possibility of democratic politics challenging dominant notions of citizenship and participation in Turkey. The chapter concludes with a brief assessment of the discourse on protests under the AKP regime’s populist authoritarian rule, which builds on historical legacies associating protests with illegality and anarchy.Publisher versio
Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textIn the present study, mechanical properties of 0.25Li(2)O.2SiO(2)-0.75BaO.2SiO(2) glass-ceramic were investigated. The transformations temperatures were determined by DTA instrument. The optimum nucleation temperature was found to be 540 degrees C. This suggested the crystallization temperatures as 675, 720 and 800 degrees C. After carrying out crystallization heat treatments, Vickers indentation test was applied. In order to determine the indentation fracture toughness (KIC), crack half-length, 'c' of the samples was measured. To calculate KIC, Young's modulus, E and the measured hardness, Hv were used. Using KIC and probability of fracture, 'P', ln ln[1/(1-P)]-ln KIC graph was drawn based on the Weibull distribution equation. Consequently, Weibull modulus,, m` and scale parameter, 'K-0' were determined and compared with each other
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Effects of sintering and zirconmullite doping on nanostructural vacancies of bovine hydroxyapatite by positron techniques
No full textIn this study, the nanostructural vacancy behavior of bovine derived hydroxyapatite (BHA) doped with powder zirconmullite (ZM) contents of 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 wt.% were presented at sintering temperatures of 1000, 1100, 1200 and 1300 degrees C. ZM-doped BHA (ZM-BHA) was characterized by X-ray diffraction and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Density and hardness behavior were measured with respect to increasing sintering temperature. PALS results indicate that the longest lifetime component tau(3) of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) localized at open spaces is attributed to the vacancy site and almost constant with the ZM contents and the sintering temperatures to have a mean value of 0.680 ns (corresponding to the radius of 0.997 nm). This average value is ascribed to the OH group defects along the main crystalline line. On the other hand, the o-Ps intensity attributed to the number of vacancy sites increases almost linearly with ZM additives and sintering temperatures. The intensity is also related to the density and hardness of ZM-BHA in terms of ZM contents
