Corporate Governance in IPOs
It is increasingly recognized in the management literature that the initial public off ering
(IPO) is an important stage in the life cycle of privately held and entrepreneurial fi rms.
At this critical juncture, a fi rm has overcome the fi rst challenges of its entrepreneurial
phase and entered a growth stage. As Fama and French ( 2004 : 229) emphasize, an IPO
“is the point of entry that gives fi rms expanded access to equity capital, allowing them to
emerge and grow.” An IPO can provide an entrepreneurial fi rm with critical resources
for its future expansion. It can also provide the entrepreneur with the fi rst substantive
access to cash from their investment of time and resources in the entrepreneurial eff ort.
Despite the growing awareness of the importance of IPOs among both academics and
the investor community, the process by which a privately held fi rm transforms itself into
a publicly traded company is still not well understood. While numerous studies have
investigated the determinants of the going public decision (e.g. Booth and Smith, 1986 ;
Jain and Kini, 1999 ) and post-issue performance (e.g. Beatty and Ritter, 1986 ; Brav,
Geczy, and Gompers, 2000 ; Espenlaub and Tonks, 1998 ; Michaely and Shaw, 1994 ), there
is relatively little research on the related but equally important issue of what factors
infl uence the corporate governance mechanism of a fi rm at IPO stage, and how the specifi
c characteristics of this mechanism such as board composition, executive incentives,
and ownership interests of private equity investors may aff ect the IPO’s performance
Synthesis of love and suff ering in the philosophy by S. L. Frank
Introduction. The article considers the concept of synthesis in the experience of love and suff ering. In the context of the study of the problem, the works of the Russian philosopher S. L. Frank turned out to be signifi cant. Theoretical analysis. The analysis of the notion of synthesis is carried out within the framework of the concept of the metaphysics of the all-unity of the thinker. The conceptual meaning of synthesis is determined in the ratio of antinomic parts of being. It is established that love and suff ering are feelings opposite in meaning. The value of each of these sensations is revealed. Love is represented by the categories of “recognition” and “possession”. Suff ering is understood as the “imperfection” or “tragedy” of being. The philosopher characterizes the specifi cs of the designated feelings as the subject of mental life. In this direction the dynamism, inherent in love and suff ering is identifi ed. The dialectic, inherent in each of the senses, allows us to evaluate them: to determine their positive or negative meaning. In the refl ection of sensations, a contradiction between them is revealed. Suff ering is perceived as something negative, and love as positive, in which their antinomical character is manifested. Conclusions. When analyzing such a ratio, a conclusion is formulated about the possibility of synthesizing the noted feelings with a dominant vector of the search for positive. This provision implies the overcoming of the contradiction in the field of the “unknowable” through a resignation

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
