No full textTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Filosofia, Florianópolis, 2014.Esta tese parte do fato de que Hannah Arendt e Eric Voegelin tentam interpretar o fenômeno totalitário e o fazem de forma distinta. Arendt discorda do diagnóstico apontado por Voegelin que afirma que o totalitarismo tem suas origens a partir das seitas gnósticas. Essa discordância chama atenção para outros pontos críticos como é o caso da diferente concepção de política entre ambos: Eric Voegelin expõe sua preferência por teorias inauguradas por Platão e que seguem com o cristianismo, enquanto Arendt tenta encontrar um conceito puro de política que se perdeu na tradição. Por outro lado, há algumas semelhanças no trabalho dos dois autores, como é o caso da ideia de common sense, por exemplo. Todas essas temáticas serão tratadas nesta tese de doutorado cujo objetivo extrapola apenas a mera comparação entre os dois autores, mas também busca situá-los no quadro da filosofia política contemporânea.Abstract : Hannah Arendt and Eric Voegelin interpret differently the totalitarian phenomenon. Arendt disagrees with Voegelin about the nature of totalitarianism: he maintains the hypothesis that the totalitarianism is a kind of political religion and has their origins with the Gnostic sects. This discrepancy draws attention to the other aspects in Arendt's and Voegelin's framework, such as the different conception of politics among both autors: Eric Voegelin prefers the political philosophy of Plato and Arendt tries to find a pure concept of politics which was lost by tradition. In contrast, there are some similar characteristics among Arendt and Voegelin, like the idea about common sense, for example. All these issues will be problematized in this work, which goal goes beyond the simple comparison among Arendt and Voegelin, but tries to check the importance of the two thinkers in the contemporary political philosophy framework

Based on the interview with the author, they were written in the 1980s. Red, green, and black ink are used in the manuscripts. The red and green ink are used to highlight key words and phrases. There are frequent insertions of Arabic phrases, which include quranic quotations and opening and closing formulae. The manuscripts contain several poems written by Serigne Mouhammadou Masokhna Lo, including a biographical eulogy of Serigne Mor Mbaye Cisse, a renowned Murid scholar and educator who lived and taught in Diourbel; and criticisms of social problems such as lack of discipline and good behavior, disorderly conduct, adultery, the negative consequences of alcoholism among men, women, young and old, and among leaders and their followers. The materials also include historical accounts of the five year long construction of the mosque of Diourbel (Jumaay Ndiaareem) using chronograms; the discussion between Serigne Modou Moustapha (who led the effort) and the French engineer responsible for the construction on the equipment needed; the construction of the railway between Diourbel and Touba; the personal qualities of Serigne Bassirou Mbacke; a tribute to Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and to Serigne Mbacke Madina; the motivation of 28 kaamil (copies of the Qur'an) written by Serigne Fallou Mbacke for his father and spiritual guide Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba; and a tribute to Serigne Bousso, among others. The materials also contain a poem on coffee and its benefits.

New Roads for Patron-Driven E-books:Collection Development and Technical Services Implications of a Patron-Driven Acquisitions Pilot at Rutgers
No full textCollection development librarians have long struggled to meet user demands for new titles. Too often, required resources are not purchased, while some purchased resources do not circulate. E-books selected through patron-driven plans are a solution but present new challenges for both selectors and catalogers. Radical changes to traditional technical services workflows are required, and selectors must modify the selection process to give more choice to the user. Seabed foraging by Antarctic krill: Implications for stock assessment, bentho-pelagic coupling, and the vertical transfer of iron
No full textA compilation of more than 30 studies shows that adult Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) may frequent benthic habitats year-round, in shelf as well as oceanic waters and throughout their circumpolar range. Net and acoustic data from the Scotia Sea show that in summer 2-20% of the population reside at depths between 200 and 2000 m, and that large aggregations can form above the seabed. Local differences in the vertical distribution of krill indicate that reduced feeding success in surface waters, either due to predator encounter or food shortage, might initiate such deep migrations and results in benthic feeding. Fatty acid and microscopic analyses of stomach content confirm two different foraging habitats for Antarctic krill: the upper ocean, where fresh phytoplankton is the main food source, and deeper water or the seabed, where detritus and copepods are consumed. Krill caught in upper waters retain signals of benthic feeding, suggesting frequent and dynamic exchange between surface and seabed. Krill contained up to 260 nmol iron per stomach when returning from seabed feeding. About 5% of this iron is labile, i.e., potentially available to phytoplankton. Due to their large biomass, frequent benthic feeding, and acidic digestion of particulate iron, krill might facilitate an input of new iron to Southern Ocean surface waters. Deep migrations and foraging at the seabed are significant parts of krill ecology, and the vertical fluxes involved in this behavior are important for the coupling of benthic and pelagic food webs and their elemental repositories

Lo-Fi aesthetics in popular music discourse
No full textDuring the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, 'lo-fi,' a term suggesting poor sound quality, the opposite of 'hi-fi,' became a characteristic perceived in certain popular-music recordings and eventually emerged as a category within independent or 'indie' popular music. It is typically taken to express the technical and technological deficiencies associated with amateur or 'DIY' musical production, namely at home using cheap recording equipment. However, this thesis rejects the assumption that lo-fi equates to a mode of production and charts it as a construction and a certain aesthetics within popular music discourse, defined as 'a positive appreciation of what are perceived and/or considered normatively interpreted as imperfections in a recording.' I chart the development and manifestation of lo-fi aesthetics, and the ways it focuses on various 'lo-fi effects' such as noise, distortion ('phonographic imperfections') and performance imperfections, in several decades of newspapers, magazines and websites covering popular music in the English-speaking world. I argue that lo-fi aesthetics is not merely the unmediated, realist authenticity that it is often claimed to be, but one that is also fascinated with the distance from perceived commercial norms of technique and technology (or 'technocracy') that lo-fi effects signify. Lo-fi aesthetics derives from aesthetics of primitivism and realism that extend back long before phonographic imperfections were positively received. I also differentiate between lo-fi aesthetics and aesthetics of noise music, distortion in rock, glitch, punk and cassette culture. An appreciation for recording imperfections and the development of 'lo-fi' as a construction and a category is charted since the 1950s and particularly in the 1980s, 1990s and in the twenty-first century, taking in the reception of artists such as the Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, Hasil Adkins, the Shaggs, Jandek, Daniel Johnston, Beat Happening, Pavement, Sebadoh, Guided By Voices, Beck, Will Oldham, Ariel Pink and Willis Earl Beal
