3D Forest Information
<p>This video shows how a forest plot can be automatically reconstructed from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data. Each of the trees are identified in the data and reconstructed as cylinder models. The resulting models can be used to derive valuable tree and forest information.</p>
<p>The animation is based on real TLS data collected by Eric Casella working at Forest Research (UK) in April 2012 (http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestresearch). QTVR visualization of the point clouds are available at ResearchGate (http://www.researchgate.net/publication/267327584_Terrestrial_laser_scanner_and_forest_science__Point-cloud_raw_data_visualized).</p>

3D metsäinformaatio
<p>Animaatiossa näytetään, kuinka metsäpalsta voidaan rekonstruoida automaattisesti maanpäälisestä laserkeilausdatasta. Yksittäiset puut tunnistetaan ja mallinnetaan sylintereillä. Sylinterimalleista voidaan laskea puiden ja metsän kannalta hyödyllistä tietoa.</p>
<p>Animaatiossa käytetään aitoa laserkeilausdataa, jonka on kerännyt Eric Casella, joka työskentelee Forest Research -instituutissa Isossa-Britanniassa (http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestresearch). Laserkeilaus suoritettiin huhtikuussa 2012.

In this paper, the author analyses the dialogue Lovers or Rivals. Some scholars argue in favour of Plato’s authorship, while others agree on its inauthenticity. The thesis of its inauthenticity will be defended without reappraising and developing the most prevalent hypothesis, namely that the dialogue was composed in the third century BCE as a pamphlet against the Peripatetic school. In fact, the author advances the hypothesis that the Lovers were written by a disciple of Plato in the fourth century BCE, and that the dialogue clearly attacks Isocrates and, in particular, his conception of philosophy described for example in his Antidosis. The author will argue that the dialogue possesses a protreptic intent and perhaps addresses some of those issues that were most considered by Plato himself: finding a proper definition of philosophy and encouraging philosophers to engage in politics
Estimating the supply of biomass from short-rotation coppice in England, given social, economic and environmental constraints to land availability
Background: biomass has been identified as an important source of renewable energy. However, growing demand for dedicated energy crops could lead to conflicts with food production and ecosystem services. This study uses a geographic information systems-embedded modeling approach to assess the spatial supply of short-rotation coppice, taking into account social, economic and environmental constraints. Results: results suggest that 7.5 million tons of biomass (from short-rotation coppice) is realistically available in England. Such production would require 0.8 million ha and could be grown almost entirely on poor quality marginal lands. Conclusion: we therefore conclude that short-rotation coppice energy crops have the potential to play an important role in meeting UK renewable energy targets without compromising environmental sustainability or food productio
The technical potential of Great Britain to produce ligno cellulosic biomass for bioenergy in current and future climates
Process and empirical-based models that describe lignocellulosic biomass yield of the perennial energy grass Miscanthus (MiscanFor©), short rotation coppice (SRC) trees and shrubs, poplar and willow (ForestGrowth-SRC) and a number of short rotation forest trees (ESC-CARBINE), were used to estimate the yield potential for current and future climates across Great Britain (GB). In current climates, modelled yields for all feedstock crops varied between 8.1 and 10.6 Mg dry weight (DW) ha?1 yr?1 with willow SRC and poplar SRF producing the lowest and highest yields respectively. For the medium emissions scenario (UKCP09) in 2050, mean yield for all feedstock crops varied between 7.6 and 12.7 Mg DW ha?1 yr?1 with willow SRC and poplar SRF once again the lowest and the highest recorded yields. There were clear geographical trends within GB. Miscanthus yield was higher than all others in the south-west (13.1 Mg DW ha?1 yr?1), SRC willow and SRC poplar in the north-west (12.1–15.8 Mg DW ha?1 yr?1) and in the midlands and south-east, SRF poplar was the highest yielding (10.5–11.6 Mg DW ha?1 yr?1). These geographical trends changed little with climate out to 2050, with mean yield of each ‘best feedstock’ increasing from 12.7 to 14.2 Mg DW ha?1 yr?1. Out to 2050, SRC declined slightly and Miscanthus and SRF poplar increased as the ‘best feedstock’ option. Except for a few localized examples, only SRF poplar had a higher yield than SRC or Miscanthus. These data suggest that in current and future climates, lignocellulosic biomass plantation species can be selected and optimized for best yield performance in different regions of GB. This modelling framework provides a valuable starting-point for which to test the performance of new genetic material, as this becomes available and parameterized for the models and socio-economic scenarios that may impact on the bioenergy industry
The article is a reflection starting from the epistle 89b of the emperor Julian, which is presented as an illuminating document for the reconstruction of the values of the Hellenic civilisation, based on a precise paideutic-religious programme, which takes the form of a kind of canon of praiseworthy and/or inadvisable author
The present work embodies an introduction to the thoughts on accountancy developed by Argentinian professor Carlos Luis García-Casella, who has proposed the development of a general accounting theory departing from the work of Richard Matterssich, going beyond the idea of restraining accounting knowledge to areas such as economy, management or financing. The author establishes a wide connection for Accountancy, allowing it to support the financial, managerial, economical, social and political accounting models, using qualitative and quantitative, monetary and non-monetary representations.O presente trabalho constitui uma introdução ao pensamento contabilístico do professor argentino Carlos Luís García-Casella, quem propus o desenvolvimento duma teoria geral da contabilidade a partir dos trabalhos de Richard Mattessich. Claude Debussy.
Throughout his career, Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) seemed to make a particular case of French master Claude Debussy. During his training period in France (1896-1915), Debussy was a major source of inspiration to the young composer seeking his own personal style. Back in Italy, Casella encouraged young composers to inspire themselves of European techniques, including those of Debussy, to modernize the Italian instrumental music. However, with the promotion of the Italian musical past, aiming the creation of a national art, Casella gradually adopted a different position, event diametrically opposed, regarding Debussy’s music. Then the French composer is not considered as a model anymore, nor even, a “dream for the future generations,” but rather, according to Casella, the author of a language entirely incompatible with “the profoundly Italian spirit.” We propose a critical, historical and aesthetical study of Casella’s works from 1902 to 1930. We shall try establishing a methodological link between the assertions and opinions in Casella’s writings and their application in his musical works, by the means of the argumentation developed by the musician

In this study about the role of Antiochian imperial women I aim at investigating the interrelationship between law and society and at analysing the way social changes lead to birth of new laws, in the period marked by a gradual replacement inside the Mediterranean world. Leafing through the numerous pages dedicated to Antiochene society in the 4th century by an author such as Libanius, who has always set himself up as a strenuous defender of the Hellenic tradition and champion of the ancient civic ideal, and who was influenced less than anyone else by the attraction of the new ideas of Christianity, a pattern emerges thanks to which we can understand the degree of consideration to which women being was held in Late Antiquity, coinciding with a new morality of the couple, which tended to make marriage a conjugal community
