First exercise reports of diabetes center in Turkey: effects of exercise on metabolic parameters in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus
No full textBACKGROUND: The current study aimed to show the efficacy of the exercise program performed by the type-2 diabetic patients in the exercise center related to the diabetes clinic. METHODS: This was a retrospective study, conducted on 77 (18-65 years old) diabetic patients who were attending the exercise center of the outpatient diabetes clinic. Patients who completed 3 months of supervised combined exercise program and having no chronic drug adjustment for 3 months at the beginning and during the exercise interval were recruited to the study. RESULTS: After 3 months, supervised combine exercise program, there were significant improvement of BMI (34.62 vs. 33.14 kg/m(2), P<0.001), fat mass (34.95 vs. 33.83 kg, P<0.001), fasting blood glucose (124.59 vs. 117.39 mg/dL, P=0.015), HbA1c (6.74 vs. 6.45, P<0.001), and triglyceride levels (177.78 vs. 167.50 mg/dL, P=0.038). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, as a real-life data the supervised combine exercise program, performed in the exercise center of the diabetes clinic, significantly improved the metabolic parameters of the patients. We believe that diabetes clinics should include exercise centers, which are controlled by experts, to provide more qualified management for diabetic patients

Building coalitions for transnational trade union solidarity: Comparative analysis of three campaigns from Turkey
No full textkorkmaz, emre eren/0000-0003-3124-7893As in many other countries Turkish trade unions have become increasingly active in applying transnational mechanisms to target transnational corporations (TNCs) and suppliers that do not respect labor rights. This article focuses on the contributions of Global Union Federations (GUFs) in coordinating transnational solidarity campaigns and the European trade union movement's use of its 'social dialogue' policy to support Turkish struggles. The method of organizing transnational solidarity campaigns through a coalition building process among unions and pro-labor NGOs is explained and three solidarity campaigns from Turkey, (UPS campaign in the transport sector, Novamed campaign in the chemical sector and the DESA campaign in the textile-leather sector) are compared. This coalition building process offers suitable conditions to unite the power coming from production with the power coming from consumption and is able to put effective pressure on TNCs to respect labor rights. The ability of transnational campaigns to follow up issues and coalitions' willingness to work together for a long period determine the fate of unions' activities
Earthquake protection of liquid storage tanks by sliding isolation bearings
No full textLiquid storage tanks are critical components of industrial facilities since damage to such structures may cause spreading of hazardous material and environmental pollution. Tanks exhibit mainly two different seismic behaviors one of which is the long period movements due to sloshing of the liquid and the other is the impulsive vibrations generated as a result of the fluid structure interaction phenomena at higher frequencies. The overall base shear is the combination of these two loads. The seismic base isolation aims to control the impulsive load as it has appreciable amount of contribution to the base shear values. Among various types, the curved surface sliding bearings (FPS) are commonly used in liquid tanks since provide isolation periods which is independent of the tank weight (liquid height). In this paper a parametric analysis has been performed to investigate the efficiency of FPS bearings. The numerical model is based on the Haroun and Housner's simplified lumped parameter model in which the sloshing and fluid-tank interactions are modeled by convective and impulsive masses, respectively. The effectiveness of the isolation system was investigated under a series of ground motions, isolation periods and tank aspect (slenderness) ratios. Results indicated that depending on the characteristics of the ground motion, the response of the isolated tank can be reduced in appreciable amounts as compared to the conventionally constructed one. On the other hand, some detrimental effects were also observed in lower isolation periods (Tb=2s) particularly in medium slender tanks under near fault ground motions. This undesirable situation was avoided by using higher isolation periods (Tb =3s) without much affecting the bearing displacements

No full textDetecting pathogens and mounting immune responses upon infection is crucial for animal health. However, these responses come at a high metabolic price (McKean and Lazzaro, 2011, Kominsky et al., 2010), and avoiding pathogens before infection may be advantageous. The bacterial endotoxins lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are important immune system infection cues (Abbas et al., 2014), but it remains unknown whether animals possess sensory mechanisms to detect them prior to infection. Here we show that Drosophila melanogaster display strong aversive responses to LPS and that gustatory neurons expressing Gr66a bitter receptors mediate avoidance of LPS in feeding and egg laying assays. We found the expression of the chemosensory cation channel dTRPA1 in these cells to be necessary and sufficient for LPS avoidance. Furthermore, LPS stimulates Drosophila neurons in a TRPA1-dependent manner and activates exogenous dTRPA1 channels in human cells. Approach for siting a support facility for transporting supplies in emergency cases in the Republic of Bulgaria
No full textIn this paper, the author determines the most suitable transportation location for intervention in a large scale disaster in the Republic of Bulgaria, by means of the Weber Problem and the Weiszfeld method. The objective is to minimise the cost of transporting emergency supplies across the country by locating a support facility, and thus reaching the area of event at the lowest possible cost. A brief description of the Weiszfeld method is provided in the paper. Further, using recent population data of both provinces and municipalities, the method is applied respectively to obtain the results. They were compared in terms of spatial correspondence and the final facility location was fixed. Erecting the supply site is recommended to help decrease the losses
Comparing clusterings and numbers of clusters by aggregation of calibrated clustering validity indexes

Different clusterings are optimal on the same data set according to different criteria, and the choice of such criteria depends on the context and aim of clustering. Therefore, researchers need to consider what data analytic characteristics the clusters they are aiming at are supposed to have, among others within-cluster homogeneity, between-clusters separation, and stability. Here, a set of internal clustering validity indexes measuring different aspects of clustering quality is proposed, including some indexes from the literature. Users can choose the indexes that are relevant in the application at hand. In order to measure the overall quality of a clustering (for comparing clusterings from different methods and/or different numbers of clusters), the index values are calibrated for aggregation. Calibration is relative to a set of random clusterings on the same data.
