    Get PDF
Abstract : IT governance is an important factor in the success of Information Technology systems and implementation. The adoption of IT governance and its effectiveness is not clear or documented. The purpose of this study is to understand the adoption and effectiveness of IT governance in South African organisations as they conduct Information Technology projects both internally and externally. This study is explorative in nature as it seeks to understand the effectiveness of IT governance using the questionnaire as an instrument for collecting data. The research methodology of this study is quantitative. The target sample is IT (Information Technology) employees that work in various South African organisations both private and public. The sample size is 164 employees. The findings of this study show that South African organisations make extensive use of IT governance. There is data indicating that IT governance is applied locally on their dayto- day IT projects. The study found that there is management support and deliberate effort to monitor and measure the effectiveness of IT governance. The study further shows that there is strong adoption of IT governance in external IT projects such as outsourced IT projects. Finally, it shows a strong use of virtual teams in IT projects in South African organisations, and also a relatively high application of IT governance principles in virtual teamwork.M.Com. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

An artificial intelligence model to enhance the chartered accountancy profession

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) in today’s society has changed the way in which people live and work; however, organisations are yet to fully realise the benefits of incorporating AI in the chartered accountancy (CA) profession. This research investigates the impact that AI will have on the CA profession, specifically within the discipline of applied information systems. The importance of this study lies in ensuring that CAs are kept abreast of the changes and opportunities presented in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. A quantitative approach was adopted. Questionnaires were distributed in electronic format to CAs in one of the big four auditing firms in South Africa. Data was analysed and processed to facilitate comparisons and identify relationships that existed within the data. The questionnaire identified that there was indeed a need to upskill CAs in (i) AI, (ii) big data analysis, (iii) cyber security, (iv) robotic process automation and (v) Python for Accounting and Finance Professionals. This study further recommended areas for future research by including other audit firms, conduct more analyses among the respective audit firms and to increase the number of unit analyses such as the SAICA and other institutions that provide chartered accountancy accreditation.M.Com. Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

IT governance and virtual team outsourcing

Abstract : Organisations tend to outsource some of their functions to third-party suppliers or vendors. Most of these functions are IT projects that are planned, executed and managed by virtual team members. The organisation and the vendor are located remotely from each other. However, in the course of these contracts, a governance model needs to be adopted to decrease operational and compliance risks. While organisations are expected to have their own governance models and methods, the question this paper sought to answer was whether governance is applied in these scenarios and whose governance is applicable. Using a quantitative study on this subject and using questionnaire as a data collection instrument, this study has found that most organisations apply their in- house governance principles on their projects whether they were carried out by vendors virtually or not, and that they are in control of the governance method and rules applied. The results indicated that although governance measures are formally adopted by organisations, they’re not adequately monitored for compliance

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

ICT governance practices and project success

Abstract : Previous research reveals an increased organisational adoption of project and enterprise ICT governance practices to improve project results, yet ICT project outcome has continued to fall short of stakeholders’ expectations. Hence justifying ICT investments in-view of current global economic outlook and conflicting priorities in organizations, will continue to be a laborious task unless this is addressed. This research focused on improving ICT project stakeholders’ perception of the value return from ICT investment and projects through standard governance practices. Literature on the evolution of how ICT project stakeholder have assessed ICT project value and the influence of ICT governance and project standard practices adoption were explored. The result of survey data analysis showed a complementary relationship, hence a synergy if organizations would adopt and develop organizational capabilities for both project and ICT governance standards; to equal level of maturity. The results of this study also highlighted some levers, by which ICT professional can positively elevate project stakeholders’ perception of the value return on ICT investments

An information systems sub-framework for the governance of projects

Abstract: Most information systems projects fail. Very little progress hasbeen made to turn the tide. A lack of effective project governance has beensuggested as a major reason for project failure. Through an analysis ofgovernance practices in literature from various project managementstandards, methodologies and guidelines, various project governancepractices are identified. A quantitative approach is followed to obtain datafrom IS project practitioners to descriptively analyse and perform exploratoryfactor analysis. The purpose is to determine what governance practices inthe project lifecycle are considered important and to what extent these areimplemented. The results indicate that here is a fundamental disconnectbetween the perceived importance of governance practices and the extent oftheir implementation. In all cases, project governance practices areimplemented to a lesser extent than the importance attached to them.Underlying structures revealed there are some overlapping factors betweenthe desired state of project governance and current state. These overlapsindicate that certain governance practices be enhanced. Practices currentlyimplemented that are not considered as important are identified to bemaintained. Practices considered to be part of the desired state but that donot form part of the current state are to be prioritised to be implemented. This provides the basis for establishing a framework for the governance of ISprojects

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
