Although so many important studies have been carried out about the Seyahatname (Book of Travels) of Evliya Celebi until now, they haven't been benefited from Turkish archives during these studies sufficiently. Correspondingly, it is clear that lots of problems can not be clarified without using these sources. In this study, on the basis of estates, new findings have been established about how and when author's edition of Seyahatname passed to Topkapi Palace Library. Besides with the help of these estates it has been revealed that Morali Besir Aga who was one of the chief harem eunuchs possessed the author's edition and they were transported to the Palace by confiscatio

Pros and cons of the new financial support policy for Turkish researchers

No full text
In 2015, a new ex-post incentive policy was introduced in Turkey to increase the academic productivity of researchers. This convergent parallel design study aims to find an answer to the following research questions: (1) What are the downsides of ex-post funding system (EPFS) in academic publishing among Turkish researchers? (2) What are the contributions of the EPFS to academic publishing in Turkey? The results indicated that the EPFS was a motivating factor that enabled researchers to spare more time for academic studies. Besides, the EPFS created a more competitive environment; therefore, some researchers were influenced by this competitive environment and tended towards academic studies. It was concluded that the EPFS increased the number of articles in national journals, articles in international journals (indexed in indices other than SSCI/SCI/AHCI), papers presented in the congresses and projects. The data revealed that besides its positive contribution to academic prolificacy, the EPFS had undesirable and expected effects as well. Especially, the number of publications in potentially fake journals and questionable conferences increased after EPFS. Another apparent downside of the EPFS was that researchers with no contribution to the article were included as an author for academic work

Hafiz Ali Ulqinaku is one of the most eminent Albanian writers who have made significant efforts to write works in Albanian using the Arabic alphabet. Hafız Ali, who was born in Ülgün where he received his primary education and was forced to migrate to Shkodër after the occupation of this city by the Montenegrins, wrote important works on religion, literature, education and especially linguistics. The most important in the field of linguistics is his work Ulqin (Ülgün), which consists of bilingual dictionaries prepared with Arabic letters for the purpose of teaching Turkish to Albanian students. This work consists of, Turkish-Albanian dictionary named Bedi'ül-Mukattar, Turkish-Albanian dictionary named Acibü'l-manzar in the Arabic alphabet, and Albanian-Turkish dictionary named Garibü'l-mebsar still in the Arabic alphabet. The author went to Istanbul to publish this work, but despite all his efforts, he couldn’t succeed. This work, which measures 22.5 x 16.5 cm and has a hard back and front cover, consists of 1334 pages and its only copy is in the Albanian State Archives. Among the dictionaries in this work, the most voluminous one and the subject of our thesis is the Turkish-Albanian dictionary named Acibü'l-manzar, prepared according to the Arabic alphabet. In this dictionary, which consists of 914 pages, the forms of a word that appear during the conjugation are made per lexical item. This provides a comprehensive examination of grammatical details and inflectional affixes and the usage patterns of the tense. This work, which is very important for both Turkish and Albanian language, has not been studied enough. The letters of this work, elif-şin, were converted to Latin letters and examined in terms of lexicography for the first time in this thesis.

Although so many important studies have been carried out about the Seya- hatnâme (Book of Travels) of Evliya Celebi until now, they haven’t been benefited from Turkish archives during these studies sufficiently. L-Carnitine supplementation increases expression of PPAR-γ and glucose transporters in skeletal muscle of chronically and acutely exercised rats

No full text
In this study, the effects of L-Carnitine supplementation on the lipid peroxidation and expression of PPAR-γ and glucose transporters in the liver and muscles of chronically and acutely exercised rats were investigated. A total of 42 male Wistar Albino rats (8-week-old) were divided into six groups as follows: Control, L-Carnitine, Chronic Exercise (CE), Chronic Exercise + L-Carnitine, Acute Exercise (AE) and L-Carnitine + Acute Exercise. Chronic exercise consists of 30 m/min, 30 min/day, and 5 days/week for 6 weeks. Rats in the acute exercise groups were run on the treadmill at 30 m/min until exhaustion. L-Carnitine was given at the level of 300 mg per kilogram of diet for 6 weeks. There was no significant difference in the levels of serum ALT, AST, urea, creatinine and glucose levels between the exercise and L-Carnitine groups (P > 0.05). Cholesterol and triglyceride levels decreased by L- carnitine supplementation and chronic exercise in control groups but increased in the AE groups compared to the control group without reinforcement (P < 0.05). Serum, muscle, heart, and liver malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were lower in CE and higher in the AE groups (P < 0.001). However, L-Carnitine supplementation reduced MDA levels (P < 0.05). Liver and muscle PPAR-γ, liver GLUT-2 and muscle GLUT-4 mRNA expressions were lower in AE group than in all other groups (P < 0.001). Both chronic exercise and supplemental L-Carnitine increased liver and muscle PPAR-γ, GLUT-2 and GLUT-4 mRNA expression (P <0.05). As a result, although acute exercise increased oxidative stress, chronic exercise reduced oxidative stress by lowering lipid peroxidation level. L-Carnitine supplementation decreased oxidative stress and improved glucose and lipid metabolism by regulation of PPAR-γ, GLUT-2 and GLUT-4 mRNA expression in rats.</jats:p

A Next Generation Formulation of Curcumin Ameliorates Experimentally Induced Osteoarthritis in Rats via Regulation of Inflammatory Mediators

No full text
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic and debilitating disease of the knee joint. OA of the knee is initiated by physical damage and accumulated oxidative stress, followed by an exaggerated inflammation leading to cartilage damage. Currently, no effective and safe therapeutic option capable of restoring articular cartilage tissue and joint architecture is available. We here report a novel and highly bioavailable formulation of curcumin, labeled as Next Generation Ultrasol Curcumin (NGUC), which was 64.7 times more bioavailable than natural 95% curcumin extract as demonstrated in rat bioavailability studies. We further investigated the protective effect of NGUC against monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced knee OA in rats. Analysis of X-ray and histopathological images revealed that NGUC supplementation restored joint architecture and reduced swelling of joints induced by MIA. NGUC treatment caused a significant reduction in the levels of inflammatory mediators such as TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-6, COMP, and CRP, and expressions of MMP-3, 5-LOX, COX-2, and NF kappa B in synovial tissue of rats with MIA-induced OA. NGUC also decreased serum MDA level and increased the levels of antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, and GPX. Thus, our results indicate that a novel formulation of curcumin with enhanced bioavailability effectively ameliorates the pathophysiology of OA.OmniActive Health Technologies; TUBITAKOmniActive Health Technologies and TUBITAK (KS). Experimental investigation of surface flow structure over non-slender diamond wing

No full text
The experimental study focuses on investigating the aerodynamic flow structure and the characteristics over non-slender diamond wing having low sweep angle (?, =, 51°). The vortical flow on the surface of the non-slender diamond models was investigated using dye-flow visualization and a stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) technique. The near-surface flow structure, topology, and the formation of the vortex breakdown over the wing were also studied by varying the angle of attack ? within the range of 5°, ?, ?, ?, 25°. Experimental analysis is composed of the time-averaged patterns of streamlines, contours of vorticity distributions, and stream-wise velocity components for interpreting flow physics. It was concluded that vortex breakdown occurred farther upstream from the trailing edge of the wing at low angle of attack. However, once the angle of attack increased, formation of the vortex breakdown occurs farther downstream. So the location of vortex breakdown moved to the apex of the wing as the angle of attack increases. And the flow over the wing was fully stalled when the angle reaches ?, =, 25°. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.Firat University Scientific Research Projects Management Unit: OKUBAP-2014-PT3-038 112 M908Fig. 5 Flow patterns of time-averaged velocity vectors, streamline, and vorticity at ? = 10° at Re = 10,000 Fig. 6 Flow patterns of time-averaged velocity vectors, streamline, and vorticity at ? = 20° at Re = 10,000 Fig. 7 Flow patterns of time-averaged velocity vectors, streamline, and vorticity at ? = 25° at Re = 10,000 Acknowledgments The authors are pleased to acknowledge the financial support of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) for funding under project No: 112 M908. A Dose-Dependent Effect of Carnipure(R)Tartrate Supplementation on Endurance Capacity, Recovery, and Body Composition in an Exercise Rat Model

No full text
The objective of this work is to investigate the effects of Carnipure(R)Tartrate (CT) supplementation with or without exercise on endurance capacity, recovery, and fatigue by assessing time to exhaustion as well as body weight and composition in rats. In addition, antioxidant capacity has been evaluated by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; glutathioneperoxidase; GSHPx) activities. Fifty-six male Wistar rats were divided into eight groups including seven rats each. A control group did not receive CT nor exercise. Another control group received 200 mg/kg CT without exercise. The other six groups of rats went through an exercise regimen consisting of a 5-day training period with incremental exercise capacity, which was followed by 6 weeks of the run at 25 m/min for 45 min every day. CT was supplemented at 0, 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg per day during the 6 weeks. Rats submitted to exercise and supplemented with CT had a significant and dose-dependent increase in time to exhaustion and this effect seems to be independent of exercise (p< 0.05). Additionally, recovery and fatigue were improved, as shown by a significant and dose-dependent decrease in myoglobin and lactic acid plasma levels, which are two markers of muscle recovery. CT supplementation led to a dose-response decrease in body weight and visceral fat. These effects become significant at 200 and 400 mg/kg doses (p< 0.05). Additionally, the antioxidant capacity was improved, as shown by a significant and dose-dependent increase in SOD, CAT, and GSHPx. Serum MDA concentrations decreased in exercising rats with CT supplementation. CT supplementation led to a decrease in serum glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol concentrations with the lowest levels observed at 400 mg/kg dose (p< 0.05). These effects correlated with a significant dose-dependent increase in serum total L-carnitine, free L-carnitine, and acetyl-carnitine, which linked the observed efficacy to CT supplementation. These results demonstrate that CT supplementation during exercise provides benefits on exercise performance, recovery, and fatigue as well as improved the lipid profile and antioxidant capacity. The lowest dose leads to some of these effects seen in rats where 25 mg/kg corresponds to 250 mg/day as a human equivalent
