Erinnerungen des Jacob H. Epstein.
Family history; Jacob Epstein's father Henoch Epstein came from Bohemia to Bockenheim (Hesse) around 1795 where he started to work as a carpenter. Jacob Epstein describes the events of the revolution of 1848/49 in Frankfurt. He moved to Frankfurt where he started a leather business and married into the wealthy Baer-family.
It emphasizes the writing strategies used by the author useful for other awareness and denounce discourses through the dialogue among communication and ethic

In conversation Dr Denis Burkitt and Sir Anthony Epstein: Addendum
Following four interviews with Max Blythe, Dr Denis Burkitt (1911-1993) is joined by former colleague Sir Anthony Epstein to discuss a first meeting in London in 1961 and discussion of a tumour of African children of fascinating geographical distribution. Sir Anthony then takes up the story of the collaborative relationship that ensued in which tumours from Burkitt working in Kampala were despatched to London's Bland Sutton Institute where numerous early attempts to isolate a virus from the tumour tissue failed. Various cell culture techniques were tried but a herpes-like virus was eventually isolated more by luck than judgement. There follows discussion of subsequent research on the implicated virus which proved more widespread and influential than anticipated - the EB virus. Discussion finally turns to progress in the development of a vaccine. It is a fascinating discussion in which the contributors exchange recollections of various lines of collaboration as well as one or two curious administrative barriers to their progress
Max Frisch's novel: Stiller. A study
The attempt is made in the following study to present an interpretation of the novel "Stiller" by the Swiss author, Max Frisch, by tracing through the novel the dominant themes of the graven-image or 'Bildnis' and that of the problem of freedom with reference to the novel's main character. A Transfer Report on the Development of a Framework to Evaluate Search Interfaces for their Support of Different User Types and Search Tactics
As the understanding of search systems, user needs and seeking strategies is developing, the design of search user interfaces is evolving to support more complicated and exploratory forms of search. With the design of new search features that enable these richer modes of exploration, comes the need to better understand the support they provide. In this report a new evaluation framework is presented that analyses search features for how they a) contribute to an overall interface, b) allow users to carry out different search tactics, and c) support different types of users and their needs. The novel contributions of the framework improve on some of the limitations of typical user studies, and allow search systems to be systematically analysed in much more detail and in much less time. The presented evaluation framework is then validated in three ways. First the validity of the models used as the building blocks of the framework are investigated through related work. Second the method of integrating these building-block models is validated and strengthened by consensus of expert opinion. Third, the overall approach is validated by comparing its analyses to the results of previously carried out user studies. The validation process has shown both the value of the framework and identified areas of future work that should be addressed for the framework to be completed. This report concludes with the set of contributions that the framework makes, and why the remaining work will be challenging, but critical to the final design
Attitude toward information and learning under multiple priors
This paper studies learning under multiple priors by characterizing the decision maker's attitude toward information. She is incredulous if she integrates new information with respect to only those measures that minimizes the likelihood of the new information and credulous if she uses the maximum likelihood procedure to update her priors. Both updating rules expose her to dynamic inconsistency. We explore different ways to resolve this problem. One way consists to assume that the decision maker's attitude toward information is not relevant to characterize conditional preferences. In this case, we show that a necessary and sufficient condition, introduced by [Epstein L. and Schneider M., 2003. Recursive multiple priors. Journal of Economic Theory 113, 1-31], is the rectangularity of the set of priors. Another way is to extend optimism or pessimism to a dynamic set-up. A pessimistic (max-min expected utility) decision maker will be credulous when learning bad news but incredulous when learning good news.Conversely, an optimistic (max-max expected utility) decision maker will be credulous when learning good news but incredulous when learning bad news. It allows max-min (or max-max) expected utility preferences to be dynamically consistent but it violates consequentialism because conditioning works with respect to counterfactual outcomes. The implications of our findings when the set of priors is the core of a non-additive measure are explored.Multiple priors ; Learning ; Dynamic consistency ; Consequentialism ; Attitude toward information
