Interview with Paul S. Epstein
Memoirs recorded by Paul Sophus Epstein (1883-1966) with his wife, Alice Epstein, late in 1965 and possibly into early 1966. He describes his undergraduate and graduate study in physics at Moscow University, 1901-1909, under P. N. Lebedev, and his move to Munich in early 1910 to begin his doctoral study under A. Sommerfeld. He remembers his professors in Russia: N. V. Bugaev, N. A. Umov, B. Mlodziowski, N. E. Zhukovsky, A. P. Sokolov; his Russian student colleagues T. P. Kravets, A. K. Timiryazev, P. P. Lazarev, and V. K. Arkadiev. He acknowledges P. Ehrenfest's influence in the move to Munich and the change from experimental to theoretical physics, and he recounts aspects of Ehrenfest's early career. Educational practices and social conditions of the turn of the century and early decades of the twentieth century in both Russia and Germany are discussed in detail, including the situation of European Jews and anti-Semitic laws and attitudes. Sommerfeld's scientific background and connections in Königsberg, Göttingen and Aachen are described: mathematicians D. Hilbert, F. Klein, H. Minkowski; the philosopher E. Husserl. Epstein remembers his German professors: C. L. F. Lindemann (mathematics), P. H. von Groth (crystallography), W. C. Röntgen (physics); his Munich student colleagues P. Debye, M. von Laue, A. F. Ioffe, P. P. Koch, P. P. Ewald, and A. Rosenthal; and he recollects important intellectual exchanges at Munich Stammtische. Epstein notes his involvement with avant-garde Munich artists from the Blaue Reiter circle, including P. Klee, W. Kandinsky, F. Marc, and A. von Jawlensky. World War I delays the completion of his studies and creates financial hardship. He recounts leaving Munich for Zurich (1919), where he meets A. Einstein; his Habilitation thesis on the application of the Stark effect to optics creates a stir. He subsequently moves to Leiden to assist Ehrenfest and H. Lorentz (1921). During these years, Epstein marries and divorces Mina (Maria) and develops interest in psychoanalysis; he meets Freud in Switzerland ca. 1920. Epstein meets R. A. Millikan in Leiden, decides to take teaching position at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He describes his early period at Caltech and colleagues there (1920s). Epstein ends with an account of Röntgen's career, especially his discovery of X rays; discusses Röntgen's relations with Sommerfeld in Munich

Combinations and synonymies in new world Limacodidae, Megalopygidae, Lasiocampidae and Arctiidae (Lepidoptera)
Six generic and 65 specific names are synonymized, 26 species are transferred to other genera, 30 removed from synonymy or from subspecific status. Blazia Schaus is transferred from Lymantriidae to Limacodidae, Laruma Walker and Renada Walker from Limacodidae to Lasiocampidae and Arctiidae, respectively. Renada is a junior synonym of Paracles Walker. Several previously unrecognized Brazilian taxa described by Walker, for which types are lost, have been identified

Following the success of that conference, we held subsequent conferences in 2003, 2005, and 2007. This volume contains some of the exemplary papers that were presented at the most recent conference. The conference has grown in number of participants, quality of presentations, and reputation and this year attracted leading researchers in the field from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa.Though the conference has been generally focused on performance measurement and management control and has included presentations on many facets of the topic, each year we have also focused on a particular theme of current interest. This year's theme was directed at measuring and rewarding performance. This includes evaluating and rewarding the performance of organizations, units, teams, and individuals. It includes empirical, analytical and experimental research. In addition to the three plenary sessions, this volume also includes some of the other excellent papers presented at the conference. The contents of this book represent a collection of leading research in management control and performance measurement and provide a significant contribution to the growing literature in the area. This collection of papers also covers a representative set of topics, research settings, and research methods. We are hopeful that this book will continue the search for additional understanding and development in performance measurement and management control, and provide guidance for both academic researchers and managers as they work toward improving organization

New perspectives on the shared cataloging environment and a MARC 21 shopping list
This paper surveys the cataloging literature to collect problems that have been identified with the MARC 21 format. The problems are sorted into (1) problems that are not the fault of MARC 21; (2) problem that perhaps are not problem at all; (3) problems that are connected with the current shared cataloging environment; and 4) other problems with MARC 21 and vendor implementation Of it. The author makes recommendations to deal with the true MARC 21 problems that remain after this analysis
Should rolling forecasts replace budgets in uncertain environments?
Budgeting process has been largely criticized in the recent accounting literature. The responsiveness of budgets to fast-moving environments is now questioned. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue by suggesting that companies use Rolling Forecasts as an interactive and flexible tool to cope with turbulence.
We designed a web-based survey directed to Spanish companies operating in an uncertain environment. Statistical results of the survey reveal that more than 60% of the respondents consider that changes in the environment makes it very difficult to establish accurate budgets. Respondents also mentioned that with the economic down cycle the establishment of reliable financial forecasts is requiring a great effort. At the same time, qualitative interviews have been conducted with companies already using Rolling Forecasts to test and further develop the use of this interactive tool.
We found that the Rolling Forecasts are considered to be a dynamic strategic planning tool, very useful for cash management and day to day decision-making process, but that they cannot replace budget for evaluation and motivation purposes.
The study has its limitations as the findings rely on a small number of survey respondents and interviewed organizations. Nevertheless the results have been compared, when possible, to those of similar surveys in order to validate them.
The article supplies actualized information about budgeting practices in a turbulent environment and more specifically in the Spanish context.

Marc Béghin : "Mr Palissot should learn German !" The diffusion and
translation of german literature in the bibliothèque des sciences et des beaux-arts.
This article surveys the diffusion, and in particular the translation of German literature in the Bibliothèque des sciences et des beaux-arts (1754-1778), the organ of Protestant refugees at the Hague. In addition to practical reflections (re-evaluation of the status of translation, advice to translators to have the author check their work, etc.), we find elements of a theory, mainly in a review of the third volume of d' Alembert's Mélanges de littérature, d'histoire et de philosophie. The debate concentrates on the dual requirement of faithfulness and elegance. The journal is imprisoned in a metaphorical approach, which renders it incoherent, and it often appears surprisingly ambivalent, thus revealing the theory's uncertain status. A comparison of this theory with the journal's own practice shows a growing modern awareness that the conflict between the spirit and the letter cannot be exactly seen as a dilemma or an alternative.Béghin Marc. «Que M.
