    Modelling HIV epidemics in the antiretroviral era: the UNAIDS Estimation and Projection package 2009.

    OBJECTIVE: The UNAIDS Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) is a tool for country-level estimation and short-term projection of HIV/AIDS epidemics based on fitting observed HIV surveillance data on prevalence. This paper describes the adaptations made in EPP 2009, the latest version of this tool, as new issues have arisen in the global response, in particular the global expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART). RESULTS: By December 2008 over 4 million people globally were receiving ART, substantially improving their survival. EPP 2009 required modifications to correctly adjust for the effects of ART on incidence and the resulting increases in HIV prevalence in populations with high ART coverage. Because changing incidence is a better indicator of program impact, the 2009 series of UNAIDS tools also focuses on calculating incidence alongside prevalence. Other changes made in EPP 2009 include: an improved procedure, incremental mixture importance sampling, for efficiently generating more accurate uncertainty estimates; provisions to vary the urban/rural population ratios in generalised epidemics over time; introduction of a modified epidemic model that accommodates behaviour change in low incidence settings; and improved procedures for calibrating models. This paper describes these changes in detail, and discusses anticipated future changes in the next version of EPP

    "Natural relations" : a note on X'-structure

    With the rise of minimalism, many concepts related to the geometrical relations of phrase structure held fast to in earlier approaches have been reconsidered. This article deals with distinguishing (relational and technical) properties of specifiers and adjuncts in a Bare Phrase Structure framework (X'-Theory). I extend specific aspects of X-structure relevant to the discussion of specifiers vs. adjuncts. I argue that unique specifiers can be derived from the system and that adjunction, possibly multiple, results from Direct Merge only. The final product is a series of relationships in line with recent thoughts and minimalist premises, but formally more similar to earlier conceptions of the X'-schema. I address conceptual, empirical and theoretical arguments against multiple specifiers and related issues next, that is beyond the predictions immediately following from the tripartitional view of clause structure proposed in Grohmann (2000). After laying out my motivations to critically consider the issue, I present a set of data that casts serious doubt over the justifications offered to replace Agr with v as the accusative casemarker. Having conceptual and empirical back-up, I then tackle the theoretical validity of specifiers, and ways to distinguish unique specifiers from (multiple) adjuncts. I introduce a version of Bare Phrase Structure that does so, yet keeps the spirit of defining structural identification over relational rather than categorial properties

    EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) Media for Treating Trace Metals from Road Runoff: Performance Risk Assessment Using Uncertainty Analysis

    EPP(Expanded Polypropylene) media with a large surface area was developed to treat the first flush of storm water from motorway. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the main mechanism of physical characteristics with the filtration and adsorption of EPP media in EcoTank system in order to evaluate the performance risk for treating trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) under uncertainty. In view of quantitative and qualitative risk analysis, this study assesses the uncertainty analysis involved in predicting of treating heavy metals from road runoff using an EcoTank system. Results of treatment performance estimation after the treatment of trace metals using an uncertainty analysis were 50.0.% probability (class 3; moderate) for Cd, 52.0% probability (class 4; high) of Cr, 47.1% probability (class 3; moderate) for Cu, 44.4% probability (class 3; moderate) for Pb and 51.2% probability (class 4; high) for Zn, respectively. The performance risk values of all the heavy metals satisfied the acceptable criteria.</jats:p

    Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances.     Field Application of Particle Filtration with EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) Engineered Media of Road Runoff

    Metal elements or other constituents transported in urban and transportation land use rainfall runoff are often adsorbed on or incorporated with entrained particles that are ubiquitous in such runoff. EPP(Expanded Polypropylene) engineered media with a large surface area was developed to treat road runoff. Field application of particle filtration reactor(PFR), which combined the EPP engineered media with filtration called EcoTank system, provided control of water quality. Under the operating conditions with 0.55 hours hydraulic retention time(HRT) and a capable of treating a maximum road runoff 9.5 m3/h, the mean residual Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were 0.24, 2.8, 13.4, 11 and 112.3 ㎍/L and corresponding percentage mean removal values were 91, 93, 85, 91 and 80%, respectively. Results suggest that a properly designed PFR can provide effective in situ control for particles and could be combined with or function separately from source control.</jats:p
