Then the idea of the book was brought forward. In the pages of the book you will find the experiences of people who were already exposed to systemic social injustices, even before the pandemic shocked the world. In their own voices, the protagonists open up to tell how some of their difficulties suddenly escalated and became extremely unbearable during the crisis. You will find stories of working mothers juggling various tasks. Stories of health workers exposed to unbearable risks and stress. Stories of young transsexuals forced into isolation with hostile parents. As well as undocumented migrants, people with disabilities and older people exposed to isolation. In terms of structure, the book has no chapters, it is not divided in themes, nor by country. We resisted the idea of clustering each story in a specific theme. Instead, we liked this idea of having a flow, and sequencing the stories in waves: a challenging story is followed by one that conveys hope, resistance or change

An observational, analytical case-control study was carried out with the purpose of identifying the risk factors related to suicide attempt in adolescents in Pinar del Rio municipality from January to June 2009. The target group was comprised of the total population from 10 to 19 years old with suicide attempts; the sample consisted of 36 cases vs. 72 controls, chosen by a matching of 1:2, individual and familial risks factors associated with suicide attempt were analyzed as well. Data were obtained by means of the application of a questionnaire designed by the author of the study, the association between the risk factors and suicide attempt was determined using chi square test and the reason of crossed products ratio by punctual estimation and by confidence intervals; among the main results a significant statistical association to suicide attempt was found and the following risk factors: presence of mental disorders in adolescents (depression), mental retardation, schooling difficulties, involuntary boarding school and history of suicide attempt in other family members.

The RESISTIRÉ research has demonstrated that civil society organisations (CSOs) played an essential role in responding to and managing the COVID-19 pandemic as a crisis, particularly in terms of addressing the needs of the most vulnerable groups and mitigating intersectional and gendered inequalities. Yet the lack of secure, flexible, and sustainable funding interrupted and in some cases hampered these vital efforts. As Europe and the world face multiple and intersecting crises (health, war, energy, food security, environmental degradation, drought, fires, earthquakes, gender-based violence), it has become all the more imperative to design funding schemes that support CSO resilience and enable rapid and effective civic response to crises. This requires a shift in funding schemes towards participatory, transformative, flexible, long-term, capacity-building funding

RESISTIRÉ Politika Metni: Bir Devamlılık olarak Kriz: Kapsayıcı Feminist Kriz Mücadelesinden Dersler

As a way of harvesting our collective insights from the RESISTIRÉ research, we 1) propose the concept of ‘crisis as a continuum’ as an essential framework for crisis prevention, response, recovery, and monitoring, and 2) suggest that public authorities at all levels, including the European Union, support and learn from an inclusive feminist crisis response to prevent and better manage future crises. These recommendations are based on the three cycles of RESISTIRÉ research and supported by project factsheets that aim to provide a conceptual framework for approaching future crises

Chromatin modifications of hTERT gene in hTERT-immortalized human mesenchymal stem cells upon exposure to radiation

    No full text
Regulation of telomerase activity is thought to participate in the cellular response to ionizing radiation. Epigenetic mechanisms play a role in this regulation, as well as other mechanisms such as transcription, phosphorylation, etc. Here, we investigated chromatin modifications in telomerase promoter upon exposure to ionizing radiation in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) and telomerase-immortalized hMSCs (hMSC-telo1) together with a hMSC-telo1 cell line in which TRF2 expression was partially repressed (siTRF2 hMSC-telo1). Histone methylations and acetylations were compared in all cell lines after exposure to various doses of ionizing radiation (0.1, 1, 2.5 and 15 Gy) using chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. hTERT gene was shown to be quickly regulated through H3, H4 acetylations, as well as with H3K4 and H3K9 methylations, following radiation exposure, although the kinetic of hMSC-telo1 cells were different, indicative of the higher radioresistivity of these cells. To the author's surprise, there was an upregulation of endogenous telomerase activity in the hMSC-telo1 cells, even though the cells had already expressed high levels of ectopic hTERT. Our results show that telomerase regulation is one of the primary actions in response to damage and epigenetic factors play a major role in this regulation. Our results also suggested that partial silencing of TRF2 enhances the radiosensitivity of these cells, and endogenous telomerase is upregulated upon radiation, even under ectopic expression of hTERT in these cells
