First Japanese Envoy Enomoto Takeaki (1836-1908) and Russia
The article «First Japanese Envoy Enomoto Takeaki (1836-1908) and Russia” presents a brief biography of TakeakiEnomoto - outstanding historical figure and one of the most educated persons of Meiji era. Particular attention is paid to the life and work of Enomoto during his stay in St. Petersburg as the first Japanese envoy in Russia (1874-1878 ). The author uses the letters and diaries written by Enomoto in this period which reflect his impressions about Russia, evaluations of different events, the problems he faced in everyday life. This approach gives the article a special color filling it with many interesting details
Runx2 expression and action in chondrocytes are regulated by retinoid signaling and parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP)
AbstractObjective Runx2 (also known as Cbfa1) is a transcription factor required for chondrocyte maturation and osteoblast differentiation. While there is information on the regulation of its expression during osteogenesis, much less is known about it during cartilage maturation. Here we asked whether Runx2 expression and function are affected by retinoic acid (RA) and parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP), which represent an important stimulator and inhibitor of chondrocyte maturation, respectively.Design We first cloned and characterized Runx2 expressed by chick chondrocytes (cRunx2). We then constructed expression vectors of cRunx2 and a dominant-negative form (DN-cRunx2) and determined their effects on chondrocyte maturation in culture before and during retinoid and PTHrP treatment. Results cRunx2 showed similar transactivation activity to that of its mammalian counterparts although it has a very short QA domain and lacks a small portion of the PST domain. cRunx2 over-expression stimulated chondrocyte maturation, as indicated by increases in alkaline phosphatase activity (APase), mineralization, and type X collagen and MMP-13 expression, and by maintenance of Indian hedgehog (Ihh) expression. RA treatment stimulated cRunx2 gene expression and boosted its pro-maturation effects. PTHrP treatment blocked Runx2 expression and its pro-maturation effects. Over-expression of DN-cRunx2 inhibited maturation and even prevented RA from exerting its pro-maturation role. Conclusions As previously indicated by mammalian studies, cRunx2 has chondrocyte pro-maturation activity. Its expression and roles are favorably modulated by retinoid signaling but are completely inhibited by PTHrP. A model integrating cRunx2 with PTHrP, Ihh and retinoid signaling and operating during skeletogenesis is proposed.Copyright 2003 OsteoArthritis Research Society International. Design of an obstacle avoidance system for automated guided vehicles
Most Industrial Automated Guided Vehicles CAGV s) follow fixed guide paths embedded in the floor or bonded to the floor surface. Whilst reliable in their basic operation, these AGV systems fail if unexpected obstacles are placed in the vehicle
path. This can be a problem particularly in semi-automated factories where men and AGVs share the same environment. The perfonnance of line-guided AGVs may therefore be enhanced with a capability to avoid unexpected obstructions in the guide path. The research described in this thesis
addresses some fundamental problems associated with obstacle avoidance for utomated vehicles.
A new obstacle avoidance system has been designed which operates by detecting obstacles as they disturb a light pattern projected onto the floor ahead of the AGV. A CCD camera mounted under the front of the vehicle senses obstacles as they emerge into the projection area and reflect the light pattern. Projected light patterns have been used as an aid to static image analysis in the fields f Computer Aided Design and Engineering. This research extends these ideas in a
real-time mobile application. A novel light coding system has been designed which simplifies the image analysis task and allows a low-cost embedded microcontroller to carry out the image processing, code recognition and obstacle avoidance planning functions. An AGV simulation package has been developed as a design tool for obstacle avoidance algorithms. This enables potential strategies to be developed in a high level language and tested via a Graphical User Interface. The algorithms designed using the
simulation package were successfully translated to assembler language and implemented on the embedded system. An experimental automated vehicle has been designed and built as a test bed for the research and the complete obstacle avoidance system was evaluated in the Flexible Manufacturing laboratory at the University of
Huddersfield

El Japón del Soconusco. Comunidad e identidad cultural nikkei en el Soconusco: una mirada desde adentro
Hablar de comunidad japonesa en México, específicamente la del estado de Chiapas en la zona del Soconusco (Acacoyagua y Escuintla) es de algún modo situar en el tiempo, el contexto político, económico y social de la primera migración japonesa (colonia Enomoto) que abrió las rutas marítimas niponas bajo la política de colonización japonesa. El propósito de ésta investigación, narra a través del pasado de la colonia Enomoto y el presente con los descendientes Nikkei la construcción simbólica y cultural que se ha resignficado en el tiempo en torno a una expresión de la cultura japonesa en Chiapas, México.Maestro en Ciencias Sociales y HumanísticasIntroducción..1;

Spatially-localized time dependent solutions including turbulence and their interactions in 2D Kolmogorov flow
In 2D Kolmogorov flow in small aspect ratio domains, spatially-localized solutions such as kink, traveling or time-dependent kink-antikink pars coexist. However, the conservation of the flow rate in the y direction strongly restrict combination of localized solutions and their positioning. We find that by adding a homogeneous flow U y their positioning is controlled and each of localized solutions including a spatially-localized chaos is isolated. Numerical results suggest that these isolated solutions can be elements constructing a whole flow
Characteristics of overlap region in high-Reynolds number turbulent channel flow
Direct numerical simulation of the fully developed turbulent channel flows have been carried out at the Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the channel half width, 2000, 4000 and 8000. A hybrid 10th order accurate finite difference scheme in the stream and spanwise directions, and a second-order scheme in the wall-normal direction is adapted as the spatial discretization method. We observed the plateau profiles in the indicator function corresponded to the von Karman constant. Furthermore, second peak of streamwise pre-multiplied spectra were appeared in the same wall normal height, 300 < y+ < 600, in case of Re = 4000. Nevertheless, the effects of the lager than the channel half height scale on the streamwise turbulent intensity are fixed contributions without dependence on Reynolds number. These results suggested that the new streamwise vortexes are formed between buffer layer and outer layer with increasing of Reynolds number

Previous issue date: 23We observed rotationally resolved spectra of A(0) X(0) and B(1) X(0) transition of PbO
produced in a flow cell by laser ablation. The transition frequency was calibrated
using an ultralow expansion etalon and (4s S - 5p P) absorption line of K atoms at 405 nm
within the error of 3 MHz. We determined the rotational constants for a number of vibrational levels
of three isotopic molecules, PbO, PbO, and PbO. The interaction among electronic excited states
are generally significant in such heavy molecules, and we found perturbations in specific rotational levels [1].
We discuss the potential energy curves of low electronic excited states of PbO on the basis of
the global analysis of observed transitions. \\[1mm]
