    An integrated approach to the key parameters in methanol-to-olefins reaction catalyzed by MFI/MEL zeolite materials

    Identification of the catalyst characteristics correlating with the key performance parameters including selectivity and stability is key to the rational catalyst design. Herein we focused on the identification of property-performance relationships in the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process by studying in detail the catalytic behaviour of MFI, MEL and their respective intergrowth zeolites. The detailed material characterization reveals that both the high production of propylene and butylenes and the large MeOH conversion capacity correlate with the enrichment of lattice Al sites in the channels of the pentasil structure as identified by 27Al MAS NMR and 3-methylpentane cracking results. The lack of correlation between MTO performance and other catalyst characteristics, such as crystal size, presence of external Brønsted acid sites and Al pairing suggests their less pronounced role in defining the propylene selectivity. Our analysis reveals that catalyst deactivation is rather complex and is strongly affected by the enrichment of lattice Al in the intersections, the overall Al-content, and crystal size. But this thesis aims to contest this assumption and offer a new way to approach shopping centre design. The shopping mall is not bad in the sens that it functions highly effieciently and serves the retail requirements of both shopper and tenant. The way in which the shopping mall is bad is the thinking behind their design often as a result of developer control, being one of the most commercially driven building types. This can often result in buildings that have a negative impact on their surroundings. Shopping malls tend to isolate their surroundings by creating inward-facing arcades. This is observed as the only profitable way to deal with shop fronts in shopping malls which results in the creation of large blank facades on the exterior

By special arrangement with the president of the firm, the author was able to participate in roles at various levels within the firm. These activities included engineering design, supervision and management, project cost control, and interface with top level management. During this period, the author has been engaged in the following assignments: 1. Serving as senior project engineer on the Louisiana Training Institution air conditioning and heating project, 2. Serving at the review and advisory level for three projects, 3. Studying and implementing computer aided design and drafting system for MEL, Inc. 4. Developing a projet cost control system that is interactive with the firm's payroll program. 5. Upgrading the firm's computer capacity. 6. Performing special assignments from the President, Executive Vice-President, Manager of Operation and Manager of Business and Fiscal Affairs at MEL, Inc. These activities involved the application of scientific principles to the design, installation, and improvement of integrated systems of people, materials, and equipment to provide the most effective operating and work procedures. As a result of this involvement in a wide range of assignments, the author now has a broadly based experience in a consulting engineering firm as both engineer and manager. The author also found that well-developed, practical courses in communication, business, engineering, law, and management from the Doctor of Engineering program at Texas A&M University contributed greatly to this successful internship with MEL, Incorporated

    Product shape selectivity of MFI-type, MEL-type, and BEA-type zeolites in the catalytic hydroconversion of heptane

    The influence of product shape selectivity on the bifunctional conversion of n-C7 by zeolite catalysts is investigated. Three different zeolite catalysts with different pore sizes (MFI-type, MEL-type, and BEA-type zeolites) have been investigated experimentally. For all three catalysts, n-C7 is isomerized to monobranched isomers which are further isomerized into dibranched isomers, and these dibranched molecules are converted into cracking products. More dibranched isomers and less cracking products are produced by BEA-type zeolite compared to MFI-type and MEL-type zeolites and clear differences are observed in the distribution of dibranched isomers produced by different catalysts. Molecular simulation is used to compute the adsorption isotherms and free energy barriers for diffusion of dibranched isomers in MFI-type, MEL-type, and BEA-type zeolites. Combining simulation results and experimental observations, it is shown that product shape selectivity can explain the distribution of dibranched molecules while transition state shape selectivity fails to do so. For the medium-pore zeolites (MFI-type and MEL-type zeolites), free energy barriers for diffusion of dibranched molecules are significant. For MFI-type and MEL-type zeolites, the dibranched molecule that has to overcome lower diffusion barrier is produced with a higher yield and the distribution of dimethylpentane molecules is determined by their diffusion rate. It is shown that there is almost no free energy barrier for the diffusion of any of these molecules in BEA-type zeolite. As BEA-type zeolite imposes no free energy barrier for diffusion of any of dibranched isomers, the distribution of dibranched isomers is very close to the equilibrium distribution in the gas phase. Due to the limited mobility of dimethylpentanes within the pores of MFI-type and MEL-type zeolites, most of the dimethylpentane molecules are trapped inside the zeolite and undergo consecutive cracking. Dimethylpentane molecules diffuse sufficiently fast in the large pores of BEA-type zeolite and transfer to the gas phase, before consecutive reaction converts these molecules into cracking products. Moreover, the effect of the MFI-type crystal size on the production of dibranched isomers is investigated. The yield of dibranched isomers reduces by increasing the size of the crystal and larger part of dibranched isomers are cracked as the crystal size of MFI-type is increased.Engineering ThermodynamicsIntensified Reaction and Separation System
