It became somehow personal
This thesis explores the inspiration and development of my two plays, Lost Girl and Gondal, and how those two processes mirror my own personal inspiration and development in graduate school. I will examine the relationship between my personal and artistic selves as the central pillar in my artmaking. As a framework for inquiry, I will also explore the work I’m writing in conversation with: the direct source material for my plays as well as the other work I read throughout my development process (Rebecca Solnit’s The Faraway Nearby, Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, and Anne Carson’s The Glass Essay) and how my relationship with outside material makes its way into my work.Theatre and Danc

Words into worlds
This thesis will articulate the ways I use words to build worlds, channeling my love of lyrical language into sustainable craft practices by mapping out a cycle of tools I use in making my work. I will investigate how my own experiences of conflict and code-switching teach me to pay attention to language as a basis for story and character. Using examples from my plays Bog Butter and Webbed Hands and my opera Good Country (with cameos by the other work I’ve made during graduate school), I will chart how the meanings and physicalities of language can teach us the values, tensions, and potential stories latent in a fictional world. I’ll examine how I’ve used these insights in generative writing and in the revision process. And I will marvel at how clarifying my relationship to trauma and language has helped me more confidently trust myself as an artist and as a humanWritin

Crashing into walls with my face : a director's process
Near the end of my first year of graduate school, I stood up too quickly and promptly fell face-first into a wall. This thesis will explore how that experience serves as an elegant metaphor for my creative process: including the hazards, merits, and occasional grace of such an approach.
The area of inquiry in which I am most interested is my methodology for capitalizing on the collisions of creative process without exacting undue harm to myself and others. By what metrics am I to judge the success or failure of my landing? Are there more effective ways to run headlong into obstacles? What kind and amount of preparation is useful for such an endeavor and what have I learned about myself in the crashing process? Through this thesis, I hope to further my understanding of how I develop and hone this skill of flying at, meeting, and befriending obstacles.Theatre and Danc
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Let me tie you up : methods of creating theater by control and surrender
Fear can be a paralyzing inhibitor to creative work, yet it is also a necessary force. Through my journey of graduate school, I discovered the important role fear plays for me as a catalyst for art-making, a signal to go deeper into uncomfortable topics, and a necessary counter to the comfort of control. I am most thrilled by theater that pushes me to surrender that control. Using my plays Please Open Your Mouth, Wild Places, and Knotted as examples, this thesis documents examines my methods for balancing a need for control with the power of surrender in my writing process, in the content of my work, and in the audience experience of my plays.Theatre and Danc
