The age of dualization : the changing face of inequality in deindustrializing societies
Poverty, increased inequality, and social exclusion are back on the political agenda, not only as a consequence of the Great Recession of 2008, but also because of a seemingly structural trend towards increased inequality in advanced industrial societies that has persisted since the 1970s. Policies in labor markets, social policy, and political representation are strongly linked in the creation, widening, and deepening of insider-outsider divides--a process known as dualization. While it is certainly not the only driver of increasing inequality, its development across multiple domains makes dualization one of the most important current trends affecting developed societies. The comparative perspective of this book provides insights into why Nordic countries witness lower levels of insider-outsider divides, whereas in continental, liberal and southern welfare states, they are more likely to constitute a core characteristic of the political economy. Most importantly, the comparisons presented in this book point to the crucial importance of politics and political choice in driving and shaping the social outcomes of deindustrialization. While increased structural labor market divides can be found across all countries, governments have a strong responsibility in shaping the distributive consequences of these labor market changes. Insider-outsider divides are ultimately the result of political choice. A landmark publication, this volume is geared for faculty and graduate students of economics, political science, social policy, and sociology, as well as policymakers concerned with increasing inequality in a period of deep economic and social crisis. Structural change and the politics of dualization
Poverty, increased inequality, and social exclusion are back on the political agenda in Western Europe, not only as a consequence of the Great Recession of 2008, but also because of a seemingly structural trend towards increased inequality in advanced industrial societies that has persisted since the 1970s. How can we explain this increase in inequalities? Policies in labor markets, social policy, and political representation are strongly linked in the creation, widening, and deepening of insider-outsider divides—a process known as dualization. While it is certainly not the only driver of increasing inequality, the encompassing nature of its development across multiple domains makes dualization one of the most important current trends affecting developed societies. However, the extent and forms of dualization vary greatly across countries. Insider-outsider divides are not a straightforward consequence of deindustrialization, but rather the result of political choice
National sovereignty vs. international cooperation: policy choices in trade‐off situations
The trade‐off between international cooperation gains and national sovereignty has become increasingly salient in recent years. This paper examines how voters assess this trade‐off in Switzerland, focusing on the choice between the economic benefits of EU integration versus sovereign immigration control. Using survey data, we identify voters for whom this choice is not clear, either because they are cross‐pressured (favouring Swiss‐EU bilateral treaties, while opposing increased immigration) or because they do not have clear preferences. We show that these are sizeable groups within the Swiss electorate and that in particular the potentially cross‐pressured mainly consist of politically mobilized, high‐income voters, supportive of right‐wing parties. Among the potentially cross‐pressured and voters with indistinct preferences, leaning towards the SVP strongly predicts a preference for immigration control over sustaining cooperation with the EU. Beyond this, our findings suggest that political variables have stronger explanatory power than individual‐level economic vulnerabilities in predicting choice
The Nobel Prize laureate in Literature in 2008, Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio wrote more than fifty books. I chose his novel Ritournelle de la faim as the object of study in order to find the meaning of“hunger”. This thesis includes three parts: the introduction, three chapters and the conclusion. In the introduction, I explain my motivation, the problematics of this research and the objective of this study. I examine also the comments and the researchs of Ritournelle de la faim. The three chapters of the thesis are: Le Clezio and his training, the structure of the novel and the hunger in relation to the characters. In the first chapter, I introduce the author before making a classification of the three main themes in the works of Le Clezio. Then I enumerate the indices corresponding to the real life of the writer before I finish the first chapter. In the second chapter, I analyze the structure of the novel in two steps: the whole text, and the main story which coincides with a music Bolero. I try to find the meaning of“hunger”in the third chapter by classifying the five genres of relationship among the characters according to their“hunger”.For my conclusion, I show the explanations of Le Clezio and my thinking of the meaning of "hunger".TABLE DES MATIERES
