Theory of backward second-harmonic localization in nonlinear left-handed media
No full textRecent research on photonic crystals possessing a quadratic nonlinear response has revealed a second-harmonic light localization phenomenon that originates from an all-angle phase matching between counterpropagating Bloch modes at the fundamental and double frequencies [E. Centeno , Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 263903 (2007)]. In this paper, we develop an electromagnetic theory describing the nature of this parametric light localization, which appears in properly design metamaterials or photonic crystals exhibiting nonlinear left-handed behaviors. We demonstrate that interferences between converging phase-matched and diverging anti-phase-matched waves create a localized second-harmonic wave focused on the pump emitter on the scale of half the wavelength. This light trapping is accompanied by the enhancement of the second-harmonic intensity, which linearly increases with the size of the two-dimensional domain. We finally show that the second-harmonic localization effect previously proposed for GaN photonic crystals can also be obtained with LiNbO3 material
The Impact of Unemployment Insurance Generosity on Match Quality Distribution
Get PDFThis paper investigates the impact of unemployment insurance (UI) generosity on the distribution of match tenure. We show that more generous UI increases expected tenure, reducing the mass of the lower tail of match duration and increasing the duration of matches available. This impact is differentiated across education levels, with the larger benefits accruing to the less educated.

Get PDFEl estudio de la fauna carroñera desde una perspectiva forense permite conocer el proceso de descomposición de los vertebrados (aún en una sucesión cadavérica antigua) y contribuye con los estudios fafonómicos. En esta investigación, fueron examinados los insectos asociados a restos de lobos marinos de 1290 ± 100 años AP hallados en Puerto Madryn (Argentina). Las especies registradas fueron: Cochliomyia macellaria y Fannia sp. (Diptera), Dermestes maculatus y Necrobia rufipes (Coleoptera) y Tineola cf. biselliella (Lepidoptera). Fue determinado que la sucesión se desarrolló a fines de la primavera o comienzos del verano y los restos estuvieron expuestos al aire abierto por aproximadamente 50 días, cuando la descomposición aparentemente fue interrumpida por fenómenos de remoción en masa que enterraron los restos.The study of a carrion fauna from a forensic perspective provides insight into cadaveric succession during vertebrate decomposition and contributes to documentation of taphonomic processes. The insects associated with sea lion bones of 1290 ± 100 years BP found in Puerto Madryn (Argentina) were examined. The recorded species were: Cochliomyia macellaria and Fannia sp. (Diptera), Dermestes maculatus and Necrobia rufipes (Coleoptera), and Tineola cf. biselliella (Lepidoptera). The succession of insect species occurred at the end of spring or the beginning of summer, on carrion exposed to the open air for approximately 50 days. Disentangling time constant and time dependent hidden state in time series with variational Bayesian inference

The VBRNN contains explicit structure to disentangle time constant and time dependent dynamics for use with compatible time series, such as those that can be modelled by differential equations with time constant parameters and time dependent state. The model consists of a Variational Bayes (VB) layer to infer time constant state, as well as a conditioned-RNN to model time dependent dynamics. The VBRNN is explored through various synthetic datasets and problems, and compared to conventional methods on these datasets.
