Anatomical and functional investigation of the deep medial entorhinal cortex
Spatial computations are thought to be processed in the hippocampal-entorhinal
network and involve neurons with spatially selective firing properties. The deep medial
entorhinal cortex (MEC) consists of molecularly distinct sublayers with distinct
connectivity. One of these layers, layer 5b (L5b) receives input both from the
hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) area and the superficial MEC, regions that have
abundant spatially selective cells. Extracellular recordings from rats found grid and
conjunctive cells in the deep MEC, while other studies suggest that deep MEC
neurons are silent. Based on its position in the circuit and the presence of spatial cells,
I hypothesized that L5b plays a role in spatial cognition. To test this hypothesis, I first
investigated approaches to target L5b cells with genetic precision and characterized
transgenic mouse lines. I found a mouse line that had tTA expression sufficiently
specific to L5b, and used this line to investigate the anatomy and firing properties of
L5b cells. I developed an analysis pipeline to automate the analysis of extracellular
recordings using MountainSort, and evaluated opto-tagging of genetically defined
cells in an open field arena. I successfully opto-tagged one genetically defined deep
layer cell and a small number of cells that receive input from genetically defined deep
layer cells. My analysis of the firing properties of deep MEC cells recorded from mice
indicates that grid and head-direction properties are similar to what was reported in
the rat. My results support the idea that deep layers of MEC have a powerful influence
on more superficial layers and suggest how cells in this area may contribute to spatial
behaviours

Phthinomita ingramae Nolan & Cribb 2006, n. sp.
Phthinomita ingramae n. sp. (Figs. 32–34) Type host: Siganus punctatus (Schneider), Goldspotted Rabbitfish (Perciformes: Siganidae). Site in host: Intertrabecular spaces of ventricle (heart). Type locality: Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef (14°40'S 145°27'E), Queensland. Material examined: ex S. punctatus, Lizard Island (QLD), Aug. 2002, Jan. 2003, twenty specimens (Holotype no. QM G 225573; Paratype nos. QM G 225574–225579). Collector: M.J. Nolan. Etymology Specific name for Miss Emma J. Ingram, for her continued support and encouragement during the writing of this paper. Description Based on 20 whole mounts. With features of genus. Body slightly notched at male genital pore. Anterior testis originating posterior to intercaecal field, but anterosinistral to distal termination of right posterior caecum, margins lobed. Posterior testis ovoid to spherical. Cirrussac tearshaped. Internal seminal vesicle spherical, occupying ventral region of cirrussac; ejaculatory duct sinuous; prostatic cells not seen. Ovary obovate, posterior to posterior margin of anterior testis. Oviduct originating at centre of posterior margin of ovary, passing posteriorly dorsally, entering oötype posterodorsally. Vitelline duct forming anterior to anterior margin of cirrussac, passing posteriorly sinuously, dextral to cirrussac, convoluted distally, entering oötype posterodextrally. Oötype ovate. Mehlis' gland extending anteriorly to posterior margin of cirrussac, extending posteriorly to anterior margin of posterior testis. Uterus extending from oötype, ventral to oviduct. Uterine chamber forming laterally to posterior margin of ovary, straight, narrowing posteriorly, passing dorsally to female genital pore. Vitelline follicles extending anteriorly past intestinal bifurcation, extending posteriorly to posterior margin of uterine chamber, filling intercaecal field, ventral to ovary, oviduct and uterus. Remarks This species shows close affinity with the characters differentially diagnostic of the genus Phthinomita and is here identified as a new species in that genus. Phthinomita ingramae n. sp. is immediately distinguished by the combined possession of a body 2317–2983 (2645) long, an anterior testis that is positioned posterior to the intercaecal field but anterosinistral to the distal termination of the right posterior caecum, an anterior testis 5.4–11.3 times longer than wide and 4.9–10.7 times longer than the posterior testis, a tearshaped cirrussac and a uterine chamber that is 174 long on average. There are in addition, 10–38 base differences (2.8–11.7% sequence divergence) between the ITS2 rDNA sequence of P. ingramae and the remaining Phthinomita species sequenced here. Sequences from Phthinomita ingramae (three replicates) from S. punctatus off Lizard Island differ by 10 bases from those of Phthinomita sp. A (two replicates) from S. virgatus of Ningaloo Reef.Published as part of Nolan, Matthew J. & Cribb, Thomas H., 2006, An exceptionally rich complex of Sanguinicolidae von Graff, 1907 (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda) from Siganidae, Labridae and Mullidae (Teleostei: Perciformes) from the Indo-west Pacific Region, pp. 1-80 in Zootaxa 1218 (1) on pages 45-46, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.1218.1.1, http://zenodo.org/record/506485

Father Andrew Mullen 1790-1818: a study in early nineteenth century spirituality
This thesis is laid out in three parts: Part I. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death. Part II. The burial of Andrew Mullen and the immediate cult to him This is based on documentary evidence. Part III. Most of this part is a catalogue of testimonies taken from 1993 onwards. Then there is the conclusion on the popular devotion to Andrew Mullen stressing the theological aspect of the subject. In the course of writing the thesis it was decided to separate the documentary evidence from the oral tradition. This was advantageous in developing the thesis, and the documents provided a secure basis for the oral tradition. Two pieces of information were found in March 1997. They are death notices: 2 January 1819, The Leinster Journal and 7 January 1819, The Car low Morning Post. There is a slight discrepancy between the two on the date of his death. Also this discrepancy shows a slight difference from the date of the tombstone
Nolan asciende: la ciencia ficción y la vértebra que falta
One of 21st century\u27s most important directors is, without a doubt, Christopher Nolan. This renowned author is particularly known for mixing various film genres to create epic and innovative settings. This approaching has not allowed him to be pigeonholed as a science fiction director, despite certain characteristics that can be observed in his films. So which way is Nolan going?

Multivariate elliptically contoured stable distributions: theory and estimation
Published in:
Nolan, J.P. Comput Stat (2013) 28: 2067. doi:10.1007/s00180-013-0396-7Stable distributions with elliptical contours are a class of distributions that are useful for modeling heavy tailed multivariate data. This paper describes the theory of such distributions, presents formulas for calculating their densities, and methods for fitting the data and assessing the fit. Efficient numerical routines are implemented and evaluated in simulations. Applications to data sets of a financial portfolio with 30 assets and to a bivariate radar clutter data set are presented
