The effects of prolonged running on foot posture: a repeated measures study of half marathon runners using the foot posture index and navicular height

No full text
Background Different foot postures are associated with alterations in foot function, kinetics and the subsequent occurrence of injury. Little is known about changes in foot posture following prolonged weightbearing exercise. This study aimed to identify changes in foot posture after running a half marathon. Methods Foot posture was measured using the Foot Posture Index (FPI-6) and navicular height in thirty volunteer participants before and after running a half marathon. FPI-6 scores were converted to Rasch logit values and means compared for these and navicular height using an ANOVA. Results There was a 5 mm drop in navicular height in both feet when measured after the half marathon (P < 0.05). The FPI-6 showed a side x time interaction with an increase in score indicating a more ‘pronated’ position in the left foot of + 2 [Rasch value + 1.7] but no change in the right foot (+ 0.4 [+ 0.76]) following the half marathon. Conclusion The apparent differences between the FPI-6 and navicular height on the right foot may be because the FPI-6 takes soft tissue contour changes into consideration whilst the navicular height focuses on skeletal changes. The changes in foot posture towards a more pronated position may have implications for foot function, and therefore risk of injury; shoe fit and comfort and also the effect of therapeutic orthoses worn during prolonged running

Analysis of the retail survey of products that carry welfare- claims and of non-retailer led assurance schemes whose logos accompany welfare-claims.

No full text
This report serves two aims. Firstly, this report contains analysis of the retail audit (sub-deliverable 1.2.2.1) of welfare-friendly food products in the 6 study countries. The report gives the results of an emerging comparative analysis of the ‘market’ for welfare-friendly food products in the 6 study countries. It also outlines ‘non-retailer’ led schemes1 whose products occurred in the study. In this way, an emerging picture of the actual product ranges, that make claims about welfare-friendliness, will be drawn based on fieldwork carried out from November 2004 until April 2005. Also, the report explores how the different legislative and voluntary standards on animal welfare compare across different countries and how these actively advertise their welfare-friendlier component to consumers through food packaging. <br/

Linguistic development in L2 Spanish: creation and analysis of a learner corpus

No full text
This project had two aims: to establish a small scale, high quality database of spoken learner Spanish, and to undertake a short programme of substantive research into L2 (second language)Spanish. The data was collected from classroom learners of Spanish (with English as their first language), from beginners to advanced level, using specially designed elicitation tasks. For comparison purposes, native speakers were also recorded undertaking the same tasks. The resulting database contains digital soundfiles of learner speech, accompanied by transcripts in CHILDES (Child Language Data Exchange System) format which are tagged for parts of speech. The material will be made freely available for use among the Spanish second language acquisition research community, through a specially created website. The substantive research programme investigates the acquisition of central morphosyntactic properties of Spanish, such as word order, clitic pronouns, verbal morphology and wh-questions, providing a description and analysis of developmental sequences of L2 Spanish from an interface perspective. Phenomena such as the role of rote-learned formulas in instructed L2 Spanish were also studied. Research such as this enables us to better understand the processes involved in learning a second language in a classroom setting, and thus supports curriculum design for instructed L2 programmes.</span

The retail of welfare-friendly products: A comparative assessment of the nature of the market for welfare-friendly products in six European Countries

No full text
This paper attempts to describe the market for welfare-friendly foodstuffs within larger retailing trends in six study countries in Europe (Norway, Sweden, Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK). This is based on the findings to date from the work carried out by the work package 1.2 whose aims are to study the current and potential market for welfare-friendly foodstuffs. The aims of the current empirical stages of work package 1.2 are focussed on – what do retailers communicate to consumers about animal welfare? How is animal welfare framed? Are welfare-claims used on their own or within broader issues of quality
