No full textPenelitian ini membahas tentang bagaimana star image bintang Hollywood
perempuan dibentuk sebagai celebrity feminist. Penelitian ini berfokus pada star
image Emma Watson sebagai celebrity feminist dan model feminism-nya melalui
karakter yang dia mainkan di film Beauty and The Beast (2017). Penelitian ini
menggunakan star as image Richard Dyer, yang melihat bintang sebagai fenomena
sosial dan menunjukkan bahwa bagaimanapun kita melihat bintang dalam
dialektika produksi/konsumsi film, hal tersebut hanya bisa dipahami sepenuhnya
secara ideologis. Metodelogi penelitian ini adalah semiotika Charles Sanders
Peirce, yang digunakan untuk menganalisis pertanda spesifik star image dalam teks
film yang berhubungan dengan postfeminist sensibility. Hasil analisis dari data-data
tersebut menunjukkan hubungan antara star image Watson dan film Beauty and The
Beast sebagai star vehicle-nya. Keduanya saling memaksimalkan star image Emma
Watson sebagai celebrity feminist dengan menonjolkan postfeminist sensibility
dengan gagasan seputar choice, self empowerment, success dan freedom. Elemen
choice ditunjukan dengan cara secara sadar memilih feminnitas tradisional dengan
memilih hubungan heteroseksual, memilih melakukan pekerjaan rumah tangga,
serta memilih untuk tampil cantik dan seksi. Elemen personal empowerment terlihat
melalui kegemaran Watson membaca buku yang menjadikannya perempuan pintar,
serta cara berpakaian yang stylish serta perawatan diri dengan baik yang
membutuhkan biaya mahal. Elemen success terlihat dengan Emma Watson yang
memiliki karier, kaya sehingga tidak memiliki kecemasan finansial dan
menemukan cinta sejati. Usaha untuk menuju kesuksesan ini ditunjukkan dengan
kemandirian dan self-determination. Elemen freedom ditunjukkan dengan jiwa
petualang yang menjadikan buku sebagai sarana kebebasan. Selain itu freedom juga
ditunjukkan sebagai sesuatu yang tidak dapat diraih oleh perempuan tanpa bantuan
laki-laki

Review: Dyer, Richard. The Culture of Queers.
No full textRichard Dyer, Professor of Film Studies at The University of Warwick (GB), is the author of several highly acclaimed works such as Now You See It: Studies in Lesbian and Gay Film (1990), The Matter of Images (1993) and White (1997). His latest monograph is a collection of fourteen essays out of which only two were specifically written for this volume. The task of this collection is to present a wide range of genres, aesthetics and individuals as "cultural productions", which together help to form a notion of male queer culture before the infamous Stonewall riots in 1969. Each of these individual articles can be loosely linked to the overall historical context to which The Culture of Queers adheres. Looking at the contribution made by queer cultural production before the era of Gay Pride, Act Up and Gay Studies, their underlying queer quality, Dyer suggests, proves to have been even more coded, subversive, and isolated than its manifestations and representations nowadays are

The Human Factor: Emma Stone in Birdman.
No full textABSTRACTThis essay offers an analysis of the meanings and conflicts conveyed through the characters of Sam Thompson in the film Birdman (2014) and the effect of casting Emma Stone for the part. To this aim, the prime theoretical source are Richard Dyer’s elaborations on film characters as constructions and stars as structured polysemy from Stars. A brief section is devoted to the persona of Emma Stone as a constructed personage that articulates a series of meanings. The analysis explores the various means through which the character of Sam is constructed devoting special attention to the influence of Stone’s persona on its characterisation. As this essay will argue, Stone’s persona is a decisive element of Sam’s characterisation because it reinforces and determines the meanings the film conveys through her.RESUMENEste trabajo de fin de grado ofrece un análisis de los significados y conflictos que se expresan a través del personaje de Sam Thompson en la película Birdman (2014) y el efecto de la elección de Emma Stone para el papel. Para ello, las elaboraciones de Richard Dyer en Stars sobre los personajes de películas como construcciones y la polisemia estructurada de las estrellas, son la principal fuente teórica. Se dedica una sección a la ‘persona’ de Emma Stone como personaje y los significados que articula. El análisis explora los diferentes mecanismos a través de los que se construye el personaje de Sam, prestando especial atención a la influencia de la ‘persona’ de Stone en su caracterización. Como se expondrá, la ‘persona’ de Stone es un elemento decisivo para la caracterización de Sam porque refuerza y determina los significados que la película transmite a través de ella. <br /
Chasing their Dreams in the City of Stars: Emma Stone and Mia Dolan’s Star Personae in La La Land
No full textEste análisis se centra en la figura de Emma Stone como estrella de Hollywood, basándose en el libro de Richard Dyer, Stars (1998) y haciendo hincapié en la representación de la “estrella” en la actualidad como una persona común, lejos de la figura endiosada del cine clásico. Además, se analiza el rol de Stone en La La Land (Damien Chazelle, 2016) y el cambio que se produce cuando Mia, su personaje en dicha película, salta a la fama. Debido a la escasez de representación de la mujer en roles protagonistas en el cine, ya comentada por Dyer, surge la necesidad de hablar desde un punto de vista de ideología de género. En relación con el personaje de Stone, se puede ver cómo se presenta una figura femenina exitosa que tiene que renunciar a su vida amorosa para triunfar, recalcando las ideas de María San Filippo (2022) sobre la dificultad de la mujer para “tenerlo todo”.<br /
