    Nagata Tetsuzan in 1933

    Nagata Tetsuzan is known as one of the leading figures of the Imperial Army after Manchurian incident. However, it can be said that the full- scale research on him has not been done yet. The author has interpreted so far Nagata's visions and policies during 1920s and Manchurian incident. This paper focuses on the period from April 1932 to August 1933 while he was chief of the intelligence divisions of the general staff to explore what Nagata was thinking particularly in 1933. Those are the times when a committee was organized among chief officials in the war ministry, which brought about contentions between two factions of army officers; the Imperial Way group (Kohdoh-ha) and the Control Faction (Tohsei-ha). And furthermore, during that time, Nagata and his group were clearly coming out with their political stance towards the movement of national reconstruction by younger military officers.     Robo-Sensei's NLP-Based Error Detection and Feedback Generation

    This paper presents a new version of Robo-Sensei's NLP (Natural Language Processing) system which updates the version currently available as the software package ROBO-SENSEI: Personal Japanese Tutor (Nagata, 2004). Robo-Sensei's NLP system includes a lexicon, a morphological generator, a word segmentor, a morphological parser, a syntactic parser, an error detector, and a feedback generator. The present paper focuses on the error detector and the feedback generator and describes how those components are integrated into Robo-Sensei's NLP system, what types of errors are detected, and what kinds of feedback messages are generated. The author is currently developing a new Robo-Sensei online textbook (Nagata, in press). The updated system is the NLP processing engine behind the new textbook.</jats:p

    New exact coherent states in channel flow

    Three spatially periodic travelling wave exact coherent states are presented for channel flow. Two of the flows, which are asymmetric with respect to the channel centreplane, are derived by homotopy from solutions for channel flow subject to a spanwise rotation investigated by [1]. The third flow satisfies a half-turn rotational symmetry about a point on the channel centreplane, and turns out to be the flow from which one of the asymmetric flows bifurcates in a symmetry breaking bifurcation. One of the asymmetric flows is found to substantially reduce the value of the lowest Reynolds number at which exact solutions are known to exist down to 665

    Communicating isolation and personal struggle: Nagata Kabi’s My Lesbian Experience with loneliness

    In June 2018, Nagata Kabi achieved unexpected international success by winning the Harvey Award for her essay manga, ‘My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness’ (Sabishisugite Rezu Fūzoku ni Ikimashita Repo). The plot is quite simple: the author, a 28-year-old Japanese woman with no sexual experience and a history of mental health issues, decides to hire a female escort to have sex for the very first time. Despite the seemingly straightforward plot, this manga is not about sex. The original title, which translates to ‘Report: I was too lonely, so I went to a lesbian escort service,’ reflects the main theme of Nagata’s struggle with loneliness and her continuous search for belonging. Sex with a sex worker serves as a tool for Nagata to explore her physical and mental status, her vulnerabilities, and to express her personal development. Nagata is an outcast for the standards of the Japanese society: despite being an adult, she is not employed full-time, and her aspiration to pursue a career in the manga world concerns her parents. Additionally, her homosexuality further marginalizes her. Nagata’s deviation from the societal norms is underscored by her limited sexual knowledge, acquired solely from reading manga. Initially, Nagata’s struggle appears to revolve around meeting parental expectations and becoming a shakaijin, or a fully functioning member of Japanese society. However, it ultimately evolves into a journey of learning to relate to others, demonstrating how sex (and manga) can serve as a means of communication among individuals. This article examines how Nagata, through her manga, portrays the communication challenges faced by individuals who do not fit neatly into established categories, particularly those who experience a life development following a ‘queer temporality,’ in contrast to heteronormative life trajectories. Ultimately, it demonstrates how manga can serve as a tool to alleviate isolation for individuals who do not conform to the established norms of Japanese society

    Pod dehiscence or shattering is an agronomic character of importance in breeding soybeans adaptable to machinery cultivation. Caviness (1969) had presented heritability estimation of pod dehiscence in four crosses between varieties in the United States and the wild soybean, and the values in broad sense in F2 generation were very high (over 90%). The author (Nagata, 1974) has reported results of observations of pod dehiscence under 40 different conditions with special regard to the moisture contents of plant parts, especially of seeds, and concluded that pod dehiscence was affected greatly by environment and year with reference to the meteorological conditions.</p

    Relation between enstrophy production and geometry near the turbulent/non-turbulent interface in free shear flows

    In many free shear flows, such as mixing layers, wakes and jets exhibit a sharp turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) separating regions of turbulent and non-turbulent or potential flow. In the present work the dependence of enstrophy production on the interface geometry near the TNTI is investigated by using direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a shear free turbulence (SFT) and a temporally developing planar jet (PJET). It is shown that the geometry of the TNTI has impacts on the mechanism governing enstrophy dynamics within the interface layer itself. In particular it is shown that enstrophy production within the turbulent sublayer is primarily associated with a convex shape of the interface both the SFT and PJET

    On Lipschitz partitions of unity and the Assouad-Nagata dimension

    We show that the standard partition of unity subordinate to an open cover of a metric space has Lipschitz constant max(1, M - 1)/L, where Lis the Lebesgue number and M is the multiplicity of the cover. If the metric space satisfies the approximate midpoint property, as length spaces do, then the upper bound improves to (M - 1)/(2L). These Lipschitz estimates are optimal. We also address the Lipschitz analysis of p-generalizations pound of the standard partition of unity, their partial sums, and their categorical products. Lastly, we characterize metric spaces with Assouad-Nagata dimension n as exactly those metric spaces for which every Lebesgue cover admits an open refinement with multiplicity n + 1 while reducing the Lebesgue number by at most a constant factor.     Computational Analysis and Regression Laws for Nozzle Erosion Prediction in Hybrid Rockets

    The erosion of the nozzle throat can represent one of the major limitations against the future widespread use of hybrid rocket engines (HREs) in the space industry. In fact, nozzle erosion in HREs can be more severe and harder to predict than in solid rockets due to the higher concentration of oxidizing species in the combustion products and to mixture ratio shifts and/or throttling. Therefore, an accurate understanding of the erosion phenomenon is of fundamental importance for the technological advancement of HREs. This work is focused on the investigation of graphite nozzle erosion in HREs burning high-density polyethylene with two different oxidizers, oxygen and nitrous oxide. First, the results of a computational fluid dynamics parametric analysis are used to derive closed-form regression laws for the rapid estimation of nozzle throat erosion and wall temperature depending on chamber pressure and mixture ratio. Then, a one-dimensional transient heat conduction solver is loosely coupled with the aforementioned regression laws, allowing to reconstruct the transient heating process within the solid. The obtained numerical results are validated against experimental data. Finally, the effect of gas-phase reactions on the heterogeneous reactions occurring at the nozzle surface is highlighted when moving from fuel-rich to oxidizer-rich conditions

    Kōda Rohan and the golden era of Sōgō Zasshi

    The mid-career, fifteen-year hiatus (1905-1919) of the modern Japanese writer Kōda Rohan (1867-1947) has been previously explained through power shift within Japanese literary world (bundan) such as the rise and fall of Naturalism and the brief but sensational writing career (1905-1915) of Natsume Sōseki (1867-1915). In this thesis, however, I re-examine the topic in the larger context of the social changes after the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) and WWI (1914-1919) by focusing on Rohan’s interaction with the two most influential sōgō zasshi (integrated magazines) of the period, Chūō Kōron (1887-) lead by Takita Choin (1882-1925) and Kaizō (1919-1955) lead by Yamamoto Sanehiko (1885-1952). Combining well-curated three types of texts (political treatises, light essays and junbungaku fiction), these magazines attracted rapidly growing population of college-educated intellectuals and white-collar workers (“salaryman”). Through their huge commercial success, they also replaced college-based literary magazines as the authority of literature, placing writers and literary works in the emerging mass economy. While on the surface Rohan’s hiatus can be explained through Chūō Kōron’s gradual dismissal of him as a master of yesteryear and Kaizō’s rediscovery of him as a living legend of Meiji literature, Rohan’s works after his return to spotlight in 1919 also reflect how much he had learned from Chūō Kōron’s editorial policy. In his works for Kaizō, he mixed his knowledge on classical literature with more approachable, conversational tone and reference to current affairs, thus creating each short story as a small sōgō zasshi. This thesis also contributes to the study of Taishō’s new media because existing researches mostly focus on their interaction with younger writers and latest trends from the West.
