concept of "basic culture", fundamental in Lester
Embree’s phenomenology. In the first part the
biographical context of that text is explained. In
the second one, the first advance made by
Lester Embree is described, and in the third one
the fundamental article about it will be focused
on. The core of the concept is in relation to the
difference that Lester Embree establishes between experience and the positionality of use,
valuation and belief. These are characteristics or
cultural determinations that constitute the human world, which therefore is always a cultural
world. This basic culture also occurs, at least, in
some non-human animals. Although problematic points of that theory are alluded to, these
problems are not fully developed.El presente texto tiene como objetivo exponer el concepto de “cultura básica”,
fundamental en la fenomenología de Lester Embree. En la primera parte se expondrá el contexto biográfico de ese texto. En la segunda se
abordará el primer avance que hace Lester Embree, para en la tercera centrarse en el artículo
fundamental sobre el mismo. El núcleo del concepto está en relación con la diferencia que Lester Embree establece entre la experiencia y la
posicionalidad de uso, valoración y creencia. Estas son características o determinaciones culturales que constituyen el mundo humano, que
por eso es siempre un mundo cultural. Esa cultura básica se da también, al menos, en algunos
animales no humanos. Aunque se alude a puntos problemáticos de esa teoría, no se entra de
lleno en esos problemas

No full textThis article aims to present a bibliography that illustrates the editorial work that Lester Embree wrote about Alfred Schutz and his thought. This bibliography covers the editions of Schutz’s texts that Embree prepared, some unpublished until then, as well as all the works that he wrote, edited and co-edited about Schutz and his contributions to the research of Alfred Schutz’s thought in form of chapters of collective works and papers in Journals. We include a brief comment about some of the main works of Embree taken from the bibliography which allows us to explore with the american phenomenologist some questions regarding Schutz’s thought. We will also take note of Embree’s interest in cultural sciences and his endeavours to promote a deeper collaboration between phenomenologists and social scientists from different disciplines.El presente artículo tiene por objeto la elaboración de una bibliografía que ilustre la tarea editorial que realizó Lester Embree sobre la figura y el pensamiento de Alfred Schutz. Dicha bibliografía abarca las ediciones sobre textos de Schutz que preparó Embree, algunos inéditos hasta entonces, así como la totalidad de obras que escribió, editó y coeditó sobre Schutz y sus aportaciones en forma de capítulos de libros y artículos de revista a la investigación relacionada con el pensamiento de Alfred Schutz. Acompaña al repertorio bibliográfico un breve comentario acerca de algunas de las principales obras de Embree recogidas en el mismo que nos permite hacer un recorrido por las cuestiones relativas al pensamiento de Schutz que más le interesaron al fenomenólogo americano. No full textAs a part of the philosophical tribute we render to Lester Embree (1938-2017), this essay aims at presenting a genetic analysis of the Reflective Analysis of the American philosopher, by focusing on the public and private debate (established in his epistolary exchange) between Lester Embree and Javier San Martín, and trying to deepen the problems that they pose to us. For this I will refer, in a second part, to two essays of Ludwig Landgrebe published in Faktizität und Individuation (1982). Finally, as conclusion of this paper, I add a brief "Epilogue for Orteguian. Lester Embree in memoriam".En el contexto del homenaje filosófico que rendimos a Lester Embree (1938-2017), este trabajo intenta ofrecer un análisis genético del Análisis reflexivo del filósofo norteamericano, tomando como hilo conductor el debate público y privado (establecido en su intercambio epistolar) entre Lester Embree y Javier San Martín, e intentando profundizar en los problemas que nos plantean. Para ello me remitiré, en un segundo momento, a dos ensayos de Ludwig Landgrebe publicados en Faktizität und Individuation (1982). No full textEmbree claimed that Schutz did not remain a methodological individualist during all of his academic life since he came to consider the individual as an abstractum abstracted from a concrete collective life. In this view, the socio-historical world cannot be understood as a mere structure of individuals because it also contains groups that are related one to another in diverse ways and which are the concrete subject of the social world. I stress three major contributions of Embree to social phenomenology: to have shown the deficiencies of methodological individualism because it conceals that the social world is a world of groups; to have found a phenomenological way to speak of collective subjects not involving metaphysical mystifications; and to have found a different way to access phenomena by re-specifying the first person perspective as “first person plural.”Fil: Belvedere, Carlos Daniel.
