Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Aim: We aimed to investigate the effects of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) on physical performance, balance, muscle strength and mood in patients with lower extremity lymphedema. Material and Method: Twenty female patients diagnosed with lower extremity lymphedema were included. Therapy was introduced once a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. Sessions lasted approxiamtely 60 minutes. All measurements and evaluations were recorded before and after therapy. Results: Edema Measurement Evaluations: A significant difference was found between healthy and affected circumferential measurements. Physical Performance and Balance Tests: Mean of 3-meters stand-up and walk test was 6.70±1.71 before the treatment and 6.15±1.56 after the treatment, the difference was significant. The mean of standing on one leg was 8,31±5,16 before treatment and 9,2±6,20 after treatment, difference was not significant. Muscle Strength: Before treatment, there was no significance between hip flexion, hip extension, knee flexion and plantar flexion muscle strength values in healthy extremities and in affected extremities. Beck depression: Number of normal people was 4 before therapy but 8 after therapy. 9 people were mildly depressed before therapy, this number decreased to 7 after therapy. Before and after the therapy, 4 people were evaluated as moderately depressed. Number of patients with severe depression was 3 before therapy, but decreased to 1 after therapy. Conclusion: Complex decongestive therapy (CDT) is a standard treatment method for lymphedema. We suggest that CDT had beneficial and curative effects on physical performance, balance, muscle strength and depression parameters in our patients

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Romatoid artrit (RA)'in etyopatogenezinde üzerinde durulmakta olan konulardan biri cinsiyet hormonlarının rolüdür. There has been considerable interest in the role of sex hormones in the aetiopathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study we aimed to evaluate sex hormone levels in women with RA. Fifty-four women with RA were taken in the interest of the study. Age matched twenty- eight women with low back pain were used as control group. The levels of sex hormones such as estradiol (E2), progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone were evaluated. The patients with RA were subdivided into sub-groups according to their premenopausal and postmenopausal status, and their disease activation conditions. Age average (aged 22-70) was 45.68 (±12.5) in women with RA and 42.39 (±12.45) in control group (aged 22-62). In all patients with RA, there were not obtained any statistically significant difference in all the hormones observed, when compared with control group (p>0.05). As the premenopausal patients with RA and the postmenopausal patients with RA, compared with their control groups as the same age, the lower concentrations of the LH and FSH were statistically meaningful respectively (P0.05). There was lower concentration of FSH in women with active RA when compared with controls (P0.05). In conclusion sex hormones were influenced in women with rheumatoid arthritis. There may be an important role of menopausal status and disease activity in this subject, and to carry out wide population studies may contribute to clarify this issue

Anahtar kelimeler: Romatoid artrit, Alfa 1 asit glikoprotein, Diseae Activity Score 28, Larsen skorlamasıRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory and autoimmune disorder with symmetrical and destructive joint involvement and extra-articular findings. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and biologic agents are used in its treatment. In studies, it is shown that a lot of acute phase reactants increase due to inflammation. Elevation of acute phase reactants are found to be correlated with disease activity and radiologic damage in some studies. Aim of this study is to compare alfa-1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) in patients with RA and control group and to determine the relation of AAG level with disease activity and radiologic damage score. 56 patients with RA who presented to Rheumatology Clinic of Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Dicle University Faculty of Medicine and 53 healthy individuals were included in this study. Demographic data of patients were recorded. Joints with arthritis and damage in patients with RA were identified with examination. DAS 28 (Disease Activity Score) values were calculated and disease activities were identified with DAS 28 and VAS. AAG levels of both RA and control groups were identified with ELISA method. Larsen radiologic damage score was evaluated and recorded by radiographies of both hands and feet of RA patients which were taken in last 6 months. In patients RA, a significant difference was detected comparing AAG level of th control group (p=0.000). There was no statistically significant relation between AAG levels with DAS 28 and larsen score (p=0.371-p=0.714). AAG levels was significantly higher in patients with RA. There was no statistically significant relation between AAG levels with DAS 28 and larsen score. It’s thought that AAG level could be risen depending persistant inflamation but it isn’t related with erosion evolution. Key words: Rheumatoid arthritis, alfa-1-acid glycoprotein, Diseae Activity Score 28, Larsen scor

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
