Evaluation of new diagnostic and treatment strategies in the management of the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
No full textIncludes bibliography.Despite major advances over the last two decades with the management of patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES), unanswered questions remain concerning the natural history of the disease, the impact of new diagnostics modalities on cure rates, and the role of surgery in the era of modem medical therapies. The aims of the thesis are to (i) analyse the database of 40 ZES patients treated at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) over two decades, with special reference to the impact of various surgical strategies on outcome, (ii) investigate a possible correlation between biological tissue marker expression and tumour behaviour, (iii) study the effect of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) on surgical cure rates, and (iv) assess the efficacy and safety of a new proton pump inhibitor (pantoprazole) in controlling acid hypersecretion

Contested Terrains and Emerging Solidarities within Child Care Law, Policy and Practice in Europe
No full textThe ‘lived’ and ‘shared learned experiences’ of children and young people across Europe most clearly define and reflect the condition and contours of the European public realm. Largely shaped by the dynamics of institutionalised social solidarity and delivered through universal education and welfare services their integration within and across European society’s pivots on a definitive balance between public and private responsibility (Lorenz, 1998; Lister 2006; Midgely, 2007). For children in care across Europe lived and learned experiences lie at the intersection of this balance simultaneously revealing how states mediate the relationship between the ‘dis-welfares’ (Gough 1979) generated by the global economy and the national ‘particularisms’ which shape the implementation of child care law, policy and practice. Within this context the crises in welfare experienced in recent decades can be regarded as a crisis in social solidarity, with a deleterious impact on the public realm across European settings (Clark, 2004, Offe 2003, Lorenz, 2001). This chapter explores contested terrains and emerging solidarities within child care law, policy and practice across Europe
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
