Energieverloop en golfopstuwing bij brekende onregelmatige golven: Metingen en berekeningen
A description is given of a model developed for the prediction of the dissipation of energy in random waves breaking on a beach. The dissipation rate per breaking wave is estimated from that in a bore of corresponding height, while the probability of occurrence of breaking waves is estimated on the basis of a wave height distribution with an upper cut-off which in shallow water is determined mainly by the local depth. A comparison with measurements of wave height decay and set-up, on a plane beach and on a beach with a bar-trough profile, indicates that the model is capable of predicting qualitatively and quantitatively all the main features of the data. A summary of this thesis is published as: Battjes, J.A., Janssen, J.P.F.M. (1978) Energy loss and set-up due to breaking random waves, proc. Analysis of ependymomas using comparative genomic hybridisation
Background and objectives Ependymomas are the third most common CNS tumours in childhood, and account for 9–12% of CNS neoplasms in all age groups. However, the prognosis for cases not completely excised is poor and the underlying biology of their development and progression is poorly understood. The few studies published to date have suggested that specific chromosomal abnormalities may be associated with the development of a significant proportion of these tumours. We setout to screen a large series of intracranial and spinal ependymomas for genetic imbalances, and to correlate these with histology and clinical behaviour. Methods Comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) was used to detect chromosome imbalances on 86 ependymomas from 77 patients, of which 22 were children under 16, treated at one of three UK centres (Newcastle, Nottingham, Southampton). Cases were first analysed without reference to histology or clinical features, and were then divided up according to anatomical location, histology and age at presentation. Results Chromosomal imbalances were detected in tumours from 63/77 patients (82%). The majority involved entire chromosomes or chromosome arms, many showing patterns of gains suggestive of intermediate ploidy. Of previously reported abnormalities in ependymoma, the most frequent findings were gain of 1 q, seen in 13 cases (17%), and loss of 22 in 20 (26%). Whereas 1 q gain was seen mainly in posterior fossa tumours and was restricted to those with classic and anaplastic histology, loss of 22 was rarely observed in tumours from this location and their histology was predominantly classic or myxopapillary. In contrast to previous studies, loss of 6q was found in only 6 cases (8%) and in only one child. Out of 7 tumours biopsied at presentation and relapse, 4 revealed imbalances and 3 of these demonstrated progression of abnormalities at relapse. Conclusions Chromosomal imbalance is common in ependymoma and patterns of abnormality are emerging that are associated with histology or location. Further studies are needed to establish the prognostic significance of these abnormalities
Ir J.A. Kuiper, schrijver van deze studie, behoort tot de tweede generatie architecten en stedebouwkundigen in het door Granpré Molière en Verhagen in 1916 opgerichte bureau, dat thans als Kuiper Compagnons zijn voortzetting vindt.ArchitectureArchitectur

Optical Flow Based State Estimation for an Indoor Micro Aerial Vehicle
This work addresses the problem of indoor state estimation for autonomous flying vehicles with an optic flow approach. The paper discusses a sensor configuration using six optic flow sensors of the computer mouse type augmented by a three-axis accelerometer to estimate velocity, rotation, attitude and viewing distances. It is shown that the problem is locally observable for a moving vehicle. A Kalman filter is used to extract these states from the sensor data. The resulting approach is tested in a simulation environment evaluating the performance of three Kalman filter algorithms under various noise conditions. Finally, a prototype of the sensor hardware has been built and tested in a laboratory setup. Detection of the irradiated donor in the LMXBs 4U 1636-536 (=V801 Ara) and 4U 1735-444 (=V926 Sco)
Phase-resolved VLT spectroscopy of the bursting low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1636-536/V801 Ara and 4U 1735-444/V926 Sco is presented. Doppler images of the N iiiλ4640 Bowen transition reveal compact spots which we attribute to fluorescent emission from the donor star and enable us to define a new set of spectroscopic ephemerides. We measure Kem= 277 ± 22 and 226 ± 22 km s−1 from the N iii spots in V801 Ara and V926 Sco, respectively, which represent strict lower limits to the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor stars. Our new ephemerides provide confirmation that light-curve maxima in V801 Ara and likely V926 Sco occur at superior conjunction of the donor star and hence photometric modulation is caused by the visibility of the X-ray heated donor. The velocities of He iiλ4686 and the broad Bowen blend are strongly modulated with the orbital period, with phasing supporting emission dominated by the disc bulge. In addition, a reanalysis of burst oscillations in V801 Ara, using our spectroscopic T0, leads to K1= 90–113 km s−1. We also estimate the K-corrections for all possible disc flaring angles and present the first dynamical constraints on the masses of these X-ray bursters. These are K2= 360 ± 74 km s−1, f(M) = 0.76 ± 0.47 M⊙ and q= 0.21–0.34 for V801 Ara and K2= 298 ± 83 km s−1, f(M) = 0.53 ± 0.44 M⊙ and q= 0.05–0.41 for V926 Sco. Disc flaring angles α≥ 12° and q≃ 0.26–0.34 are favoured for V801 Ara whereas the lack of K1 constraint for V926 Sco prevents tight constraints on this system. Although both binaries seem to have intermediate inclinations, the larger equivalent width of the narrow N iii line in V801 Ara at phase 0.5 relative to phase 0 suggests that it has the higher inclination of the two
